Here's a playground hit this week: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hfXCX_PMbA0
mcrady··on Judge in SBF criminal trial has recused herself
IANAL but it seems like it could be a basis for appeal.

And what's the point of putting in months of work hearing a case if there's a chance that it will all get nullified.

mcrady··on Waymo expands its rider-only territories
I also had a magical autonomous ride when I visited Phoenix a couple years ago.

I asked a friend who works at waymo why it's taking forever to build up a critical mass of vehicles to get the wait times down to a more reasonable level.

He said the issue was cost. I guess all those sensors are actually more expensive than the cost of a human driver at this point?

mcrady··on CPSC calls for full recall of all Onewheel self-balancing electric skateboards
It's great that your single unit hasn't failed but that's not much evidence against a recall.

My onewheel at some point started to fail occasionally. The first time I was going at ~15 mph and fortunately I came away with only a few scrapes. After that, I reproduced at slower speeds and was able to not fall when it failed.

I sent it in and they fixed it. This is their explanation which I don't know that I fully believe:

Our engineers completed the repairs on your board! They found that the power button had broken which led to damage to the controller circuit board. Both have been replaced under warranty for you. After your board passed our post-op testings it was picked up by FedEx!

I had a onewheel that would occasionally just stop. The first time I was going at 15 mph and fortunately came away with only a few scrapes.

I sent it in and they fixed it. This is their explanation which I don't know that I fully believe:

mcrady··on Waymo begins driverless rides in San Francisco
I took a fully autonomous Waymo in phoenix a year ago. Very cool. A little jerky and at one point it said "Figuring this out" but whatever it was got resolved very quickly.

Also, it was a pain to book it. I tried once and there were no vehicles available. I tried a couple days later and it told me I would have to wait a half hour for a ride.

mcrady··on Americans Now Need at Least $500k a Year to Enter Top 1%
This ignores payroll taxes, I assume.
mcrady··on The Founding of Google Maps (2015)
Two clear inaccuracies are that the team worked out of the mountain view office and they joined months before the ipo.
mcrady··on The Founding of Google Maps (2015)
I sold my mobile maps startup to Google around the same time and worked closely with the where2 guys. This article sounds like the result of a casual conversation with Noel and not a well researched piece. A number of inaccuracies as far as I can remember. (not blaming Noel to be clear)
mcrady··on A Life-Saving Checklist (2007)
It seems like these two articles are more relevant:

mcrady··on Why Is Location Data No Longer Private?
Do you have a source for that? Even without cellular data turned on, carriers know your rough location based on cell tower locations.
mcrady··on Why Is Location Data No Longer Private?
Are you implying it's illegal to do that? It seems like the whole point of the article is that this is entirely legal.

It sounds like congressmen and senators explicitly voted to prevent the FCC from making things like this illegal.

mcrady··on Why Is Location Data No Longer Private?
Mobile carriers are selling your real time location to anyone willing to pay. The number of nefarious uses for real time location is immense

And meanwhile, the press is worked up about cambridge analytica accessing your facebook friend network.

It seems like someone ought to put a site with real time locations of our senators and congressmen. My guess is that will solve the problem quickly.

mcrady··on Google Maps' Moat
:) Yeah, I'm a super lurker.

And here's info about Yahoo Go: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yahoo!_Go
mcrady··on Google Maps' Moat
We launched on j2me flip phones and soon added support for blackberry. The displays were small and most phones didn't have GPS.

Android was acquired in 2005. Larry was the driving force behind the acquisition, IIRC.
mcrady··on Google Maps' Moat
I launched Google Maps for mobile in 2005. In 2006, Eric Schmidt was worried that Yahoo Go was a killer app. My claim that Google Maps was the real killer app fell on deaf ears. :)
mcrady··on Facebook frees up 60% more shares today
Except there's no "shared limited resource" in this case. Just an overvalued social network.
mcrady··on The "Army of One" entrepreneur
I'm highly skeptical of this iteration idea. I've been through this two times and it's taken me two years each time to fully prove out the idea.

Any examples of good businesses that have been proven out in a short period of time?

mcrady··on Resigned
Agreed. Just look at Microsoft after Gates. Or Intel after Grove. In both cases, they turned things over to operational, #2 types in Balmer and Barrett and in both cases, the companies stagnated.
