mclehman··on The Dutch Reach: A No-Tech Way to Save Bicyclists’ Lives
I do as well, but only when using a browser embedded in my HN app (Materialistic). It's persisted during my Chrome -> Brave transition, so I'll be giving Firefox a try to see if that makes a difference.
mclehman··on The First Rule of Microsoft Excel: Don’t Tell Anyone You’re Good at It
My guess is that they meant this definition of impute, and are advocating for removing Jim's inferences entirely.

Impute (finance):

assign (a value) to something by inference from the value of the products or processes to which it contributes.

mclehman··on Microsoft open sources parts of Minecraft: Java Edition
Far, far lower than you're envisioning. There are certainly a lot of freshmen who could easily do something at this level, but the average freshman would be hopelessly lost (at least in my (recent) experience).

By the way, excellent work on Sway. I've been meaning to jump to i3 forever, and decided to move to Wayland on my most recent install. I do have some bug reports to send your way, though, I should get on that.

mclehman··on Apple has completed its acquisition of Shazam
I don't use Shazam since I have a Pixel 2 that does the same thing in the background, but I use track recognition every day to automatically populate a Spotify playlist with all the music it recognizes throughout the day. It's really nice to have a playlist to scroll back through when I find myself asking "what was that cool song I heard yesterday?”
mclehman··on No Sex Please, We’re Apple: iPhone Giant Seeks TV Success on Its Own Terms
Point A is far more subjective than you're making it appear. Personally, puking is far more effective at provoking a reaction of disgust.
mclehman··on Jupytext: Jupyter notebooks as Python scripts
Or a non-spacemacs emacs + evil setup. I jumped ship from Vim but Spacemacs didn't feel quite right so I started from scratch.
mclehman··on Tell HN: Using Gmail? You will be force logged into Chrome
My workflow is the same. I'll usually have 100 tabs open on a particular device, going up to nearly 1000 tabs across my phone, laptop, and desktop in rare instances.
mclehman··on Sperm Count Zero
What was the context for your "pretty boys" comment? Was it referring to MtF individuals or to men not conforming to traditional gender roles RE: their appearance?
mclehman··on Americans are changing their relationship with Facebook
That was a big motivator for me as well when I finally jumped ship from Verizon. Admittedly, I went to Fi, so I was lucky that the limited phone selection worked out for me. The ease of international use more than outweighs that for me.
mclehman··on Americans are changing their relationship with Facebook
It's just as valid of a reason to prefer 'stock' Android or something like Lineage, though. Not having to worry about the minutiae of operating systems can be a definite platform benefit though, it's just not worth the tradeoff for me.
mclehman··on Americans are changing their relationship with Facebook
Bringing out my own anecdata, everyone I know who deleted the app did it in the process of abandoning the platform itself. It wouldn't surprise me that the web client is gaining in relative popularity though.
mclehman··on A First Course in Differential Equations for Scientists and Engineers
Just chiming in to say we do indeed exist and your example is pretty spot on, but I unfortunately have not self-studied diff.eqs. if I eventually do, I'll make sure to write something up about it.

I'd like to think I have developed a hint of mathematical maturity (CS + late declared Math major), but I went more the algebra route and ended up never taking a diff.eq. course. The closest I came was in a complex analysis course with some motivating examples that assumed we'd have picked up some tricks in a diff.eq. course.

mclehman··on A First Course in Differential Equations for Scientists and Engineers
Just as a partial counterpoint to this and overall agreement with everyone else who responded, I've had success taking realtime notes on my laptop in a math class. It took a bit of practice and I'm sure I can't do it anymore, but it's not insurmountable by any means.

I used latex and made liberal use of keyboard and software macros to do it, and one of the tricks was to realize that if I needed a quick-to-type way to typeset new thing X, I should just pretend I had such an implementation and make up its command on the spot. At my leisure, I could write up a conforming latex command that worked with all the notes I'd taken in realtime.

That said, I've since come to realize that math notes don't help me as much as they seem to help others. I have greater success primarily listening during class and leaning on the textbook as well as online resources outside of class. I do second the use of emacs to handle the latex, but I don't think that realtime rendering is particularly important in a notes setting.

mclehman··on Reboot Your Dreamliner Every 248 Days to Avoid Integer Overflow (2015)
I think Lobste.rs might sneak past HN on signal:noise, but it gives up a bit of variety in topics.
mclehman··on A Road to Common Lisp
I'm also not very deep into Clojure, but I've had the opposite experience so far. I've used it for some real-world projects and the most Java I've ever needed to pull in was a BufferedReader that I wrapped and forgot about.
mclehman··on Nvidia announces RTX 2000 GPU series with ‘6x more performance’ and ray-tracing
I'm right there with you. I'm still running a 290 as well, and haven't really been able to justify an upgrade, especially given I really only play Overwatch and Rocket League.
mclehman··on Apple Is Planning a New Low-Cost MacBook, Pro-Focused Mac Mini
Sure, but HDMI and mini-DisplayPort covered my needs pretty well without adapters. Was it perfect? No. Was it usually enough? Yes.
mclehman··on Ask HN: What are some niche communities you enjoy?
There's a good chance you could finally be the push to get me to post on /r/mechanicalheadpens and subscribe. I've been on all three individually for years and known about /r/mechanicalheadpens for about as long, but never really thought about it as being its own community rather than just a novelty until seeing it in this context.
mclehman··on A new digital divide: Young people who can’t use keyboards
Undo, presumably.

>I've been told it's to play the radio

Is it common for the car to need to be running to listen to the radio?

mclehman··on Reasons to Switch from Windows to Linux
If I recall correctly, it's not so much an issue of actual filesystem incompatibilities, but rather something to do with Windows not respecting the other bootloader well. Separate drives mitigate that issue.
mclehman··on ReactOS 0.4.9 released
What did you do to get the network working specifically? I was hoping that adding the legacy network adapter would do it, but it prompted and subsequently failed to install an ethernet driver after I did.
mclehman··on Inside Nintendo’s “perfect” method for detecting online Switch piracy
Back on the xbox 360, there was a more involved process to do the same thing. A digital purchase really granted two licenses: one tied to your account and one tied to the specific 360 that downloaded it. My sister and I took advantage of that to share season passes for various Call of Duty games.
mclehman··on Apple sets up iPhones to relay location for 911 calls
I could be wrong, but I read "Consider how 911 is but one service" as advocating expanding the idea to other countries' emergency services, not necessarily more broadly within the US.
mclehman··on Fatalities vs. False Positives: The Lessons from the Tesla and Uber Crashes
I regularly see the Waymo vehicles in 45 mph zones on my commute. I can't say I've seen them go any faster, but I spend about 95% of my time on roads marked 45 mph or less.
mclehman··on Just How Much Money Do “Influencers” Make?
The showdead option lets you decide for yourself if you'd like to read those sorts of comments.
mclehman··on A security vulnerability in Git that can lead to arbitrary code execution
Thank you for posting this. I found myself mostly agreeing with the user you replied to, even though I myself am crawling and cloning a large number of git repos to do some static analysis work on them. That was a niche attack vector that I'm clearly exposed to, and somehow I still wasn't seeing it.
mclehman··on AT&T Unveils a Fake 5G Network Hoping You'll Ignore T-Mobile Is Kicking Its Ass
I got around that by just making another google account specifically for my old cell number turned voice number. I really wanted a 505 area code but knew I'd inevitably miss a site for which I'd need to update the 2FA number, so I just grabbed <my phone number>@gmail.com and ported the number.

It's also been helpful given how many people absolutely refuse to stop calling my old number despite explicitly telling the resistant ones "I have a new number, I _will_ stop checking the old one, and I can't answer calls to it anyway".

mclehman··on Python startup time: milliseconds matter
Seeing as that page states the resulting executables still require numpy, I'd guess it was the static requirement that it misses.
mclehman··on I switched from iPhone to the Pixel 2: One-week report
>Not everyone lives in your world.

Exactly, sometimes I think people forget not everyone owns the latest and greatest of each and every product category.

For example, I finally gave in and bought a Pixel 2, but I've also held onto my '03 Jetta and still use a cassette adapter to play music. I'm used to shuffling cassette adapters between vehicles, so I speak from experience when I say that buying extra adapters or always having one on hand is too much of a hassle and I'll end up stuck with just the radio on occasion.

Even if I were to get a new car with bluetooth, I'd still be hosed in: my SO's car ('06 Rav4), my parents' cars ('99 Wrangler and '02 A6), my best friend's car (Saturn Ion), and my sister's car (older Impreza). In fact, the only car I'm ever in that has bluetooth is my brother-in-law's Mazda. Even solely looking at playing music in the car, I'd still need an adapter the overwhelming majority of the time. Now maybe my circle hangs onto cars longer than average, but I don't think it's too far off the norm.
