mcdoh··on It's OK to hardcode feature flags
There's a typo in the post:

> Anyways

I think you obviously meant "anyway".

mcdoh··on Will Xi Move on Taiwan?
I'm colorblind and this looks way better, thanks!
mcdoh··on FFmpeg Drawtext Filter for Overlays, Scrolling Text, Timestamps on Videos
It's confusing for native English speakers as well.
mcdoh··on Space Tethers: Stringing Up the Solar System
> It is ironic that the person who first described how hard spaceflight by rocket is, due to the exponential nature of the deltaV equation, is also the person who described the best way to side-step that problem with non-rocket launch.

That's not ironic at all!!

mcdoh··on AI Clones Your Voice After Listening for 5 Seconds (2018)
It could also be used for recreating voices for people that have lost theirs, like Roger Ebert. I think he benefited by having so much of his voice already recorded, this would make it much easier for regular people.

mcdoh··on Police Shut Down a 3k-Person Game of Hide-and-Seek at IKEA
I think we used to call it Pink Panther.
mcdoh··on The Washington State Measles Outbreak
> In fact, health officials say the virus is so contagious that if an unvaccinated person walks through a room two hours after someone with measles has left, there’s a 90 percent chance that an unvaccinated person will get the disease. People can spread measles for four days before the rash appears and for four days after.

Yikes!

mcdoh··on Earthsea – A Rival to Tolkien and George RR Martin (2015)
I read the first Malazan book but it never really gripped me. I've heard that it really gets good at book three. Do you agree?
mcdoh··on Earthsea – A Rival to Tolkien and George RR Martin (2015)
To me, "soft magic" is the same as "a hacker did it" that so many bad movies and TV shows use these days.
mcdoh··on New in PostgreSQL 10
Can anyone recommend a good resource for learning PostresQL? I have a decent understanding of SQL, I've used MySQL in the past, but every time I see the latest features of Postres I'm left thinking I'll need to buy a book and take a pretty deep dive to figure out how to apply the new features.
mcdoh··on I spent my career in tech, but wasn’t prepared for its effect on my kids
I think the difference is not that public school systems are being dismantled but that a higher percentage of private school parents value education and are engaged in their childrens' learning.
mcdoh··on The Secret to Ribs Is Already in the Kitchen: The Oven (2010)
I'm a big fan of 3-2-1 as well. What temperature do you aim for? 225F?
mcdoh··on MusicBrainz: an open music encyclopedia

mcdoh··on Google Allo a Success or a Failure: Analysis of Data By Region
I don't like Facebook, Reader was essentially my social network. All of my friends used it. I think they killed Reader to push users to Google Plus. If they had just built Reader into Google Plus I probably would have used it.
mcdoh··on Now it’s exploding Samsung washing machines
We bought a Samsung fridge and while we didn't have the serious issues you're experiencing we did have a problem with Samsung's warranty policy. Within a month of owning it the freezer handle started to crack, Samsung claimed that it wasn't covered by the warranty. We contacted them several times hoping for a different customer service agent with a different response, no dice.
mcdoh··on The Case for Wooden Skyscrapers
Is this just survivorship bias?
mcdoh··on 83% of browser features are used by under 1% of top websites
Just last night I was happy to find that Safari Books Online had a 'night' feature, automatically switching would have saved me thirty minutes of burned retinas.

mcdoh··on A Collection of CSS Tips
Same here, I've mainly learned from just guess and check. Any tutorials I've tried (admittedly not many) are too basic and haven't given me a good mental model of how to approach a problem with CSS.
mcdoh··on EnChroma: Color for the Color Blind
I'm colorblind and thought theirs was one of the best online tests available, but it seems they've changed it. I took their old test a few times and it seemed quite accurate to me (based on the symptoms they list). With their current test I keep getting "inconclusive". Here are my results from the "good" test, I agree 100% with the symptoms but I don't agree with the simulation: http://enchroma.com/test/result/strong-protan/?completed=1&r...
mcdoh··on D.C. police plan for future seizure proceeds years in advance
Often, especially in the DC metro area, police do not live in the same jurisdictions that they work in.
mcdoh··on Show HN: World Population with D3
Heat maps aren't always easy to make sense of for colorblind people like myself.
mcdoh··on The Challenge of Relativistic Spaceflight

There's a great Radiolab episode, Patient Zero (http://www.radiolab.org/2011/nov/14/), that covers the the spread of AIDS and tracing the disease back to its origin.
