mbroncano··on The New York Times' first article about Hitler's rise is stunning

mbroncano··on Compact nuclear fusion reactor is 'very likely to work,' studies suggest
The EU is by far the biggest contributor though:

> Europe is responsible for the largest portion of construction costs (45.6 percent); the remainder is shared equally by China, India, Japan, Korea, Russia and the US (9.1 percent each)

mbroncano··on You Talkin’ to Me? The Unruly History of New York English
That was awesome, thanks!
mbroncano··on Interview with British Pianist Stephen Hough
I’m running Pianoteq indeed
mbroncano··on Mayflower 400: the science of sailing across the ocean in 1620
> Even the earliest Spanish expeditions were (in part) state-approved, armed and essentially get-rich-quick plundering schemes.

Maybe I’m not getting your point, but how does that fit with building up universities? What were they expecting to get out of them? Student debt?

mbroncano··on Mayflower 400: the science of sailing across the ocean in 1620
I found out today that the first university (!) in the continent dates back to the 1550s [0]. What made the Spaniards so successful that they were able not only to defeat a full blown civilization (as opposed to the weaker natives in the north) and were able to fully bootstrap their territories where the English took many attempts and failures? Was it the technology? Or just the nature of the northern territories?

I've started to use a RPi4 instead (output is through a simple USB DAC) and the quality is pretty much the same. Additionally, it makes for a simpler setup if you have a dedicated unit for the purpose.
mbroncano··on USBImager – A minimal GUI app that can write disk images to USB drives
It’s debatable whether there’s an actual difference nowadays.
mbroncano··on Sid Meier: “I don’t think I could make Civilisation today”
It’s remarkable they changed the spelling in the title to match the British customs, one would think this is a proper and not a common name in this context.
mbroncano··on Netflix boss: Remote working has negative effects
Sure it has! The question is, do the positive effects compensate for the negatives? Another question is, who’s job is effectively obsoleted if most of the work force (for this particular context eg STEM) works remotely?
mbroncano··on Why Epic can’t afford to lose the Unreal Engine in its fight with Apple
If Apple can afford losing the fight and Epic can’t, they’ve already lost. Having said that, I’m not really sure that the points in TFA are really solid, nor I see the impact of losing access to their developer account as stated, after all the framework binaries for UE don’t have to be signed. If anybody can elaborate on why losing access to the developer account is such a big deal, I would love to hear about it.
mbroncano··on Facebook trying to position itself as friendlier to small businesses than Apple
Not for the standalone headsets
mbroncano··on Facebook trying to position itself as friendlier to small businesses than Apple
Maybe they are referring to the ‘Sign with Apple’ mandatory feature.
mbroncano··on I asked GPT-3 to make a presentation for me
The dragon model is already based on GPT-3

> How easily could a hobbyist Cessna pilot land a passenger jet in the Hudson river?

Poorly, but he would have a heck of a shot.

mbroncano··on Small ISPs “stunned” by FCC move to ban Huawei/ZTE gear during pandemic
Are big ISPs such as Comcast affected by this ban? We’ve been watching a lot of Comcast vans in our area in the past weeks, along with outages almost daily. We contacted tech support and they were unable to explain what this so-called ‘scheduled maintenance’ was about.
mbroncano··on E.U. Plans to Bar Most U.S. Travelers When Bloc Reopens
Maybe is different for countries, but in general reputation is slowly gained but quickly lost.
mbroncano··on Apple: Advancements in Game Controllers
Xcode 11.5+ runs only on Catalina. If you want to use it, you’re mostly forced to.
mbroncano··on CERN makes push to build €21B super-collider
Why not both? It’s not unreasonable that some of the technologies (incl. data analysis) could be shared.
mbroncano··on CERN makes push to build €21B super-collider
The cost of the MIC is not only measured in dollars, but also in lives
mbroncano··on Extracting ROM constants from the 8087 math coprocessor's die
Thanks for the article Ken. I’d like to remark the small refresher on how transistors works, it makes up for a really pleasant read. Also the footnotes are actually useful in decluttering the articles but amenable and clear to read.
mbroncano··on Apple Pro Display XDR Review
> But outside of those complaints, the Pro Display XDR stuns in every other metric it competes in, earning our Editors' Choice.
mbroncano··on Swift Numerics
There’s an open source implementation that can be worth exploring:

mbroncano··on Sinclair Zx Spectrum: absolutely better than Commodore 64 (2005)
A few days ago our 8 years old was asking my wife how she got introduced to computers. She described how she transcribed with the help of her sister games listings from magazines to her C64. When she described how the process took a few days long of typing hex number he was completely astonished. My wife and I, both having the same background, looked at each other unable to express the marvel of succeeding in getting it to work, often times after numberless tries, to a child whose primary reference of a computer is an iPad. Later we discussed how grateful we were to having lived in such an era where the sheer naïveté allowed us to learn and experiment in ways now out of reach.
mbroncano··on The dream journal of Santiago Ramón y Cajal, who discovered neurons (2015)
One of the greatest minds of the past century, often times unjustly forgotten. He always reminds me of Miguel Servet, alto a pioneer in the medical science field.

I’m a massive fan of Fitbit devices, they work great. But the same can be said of my Plantronics BT headphones, which I’ve used daily for almost three years, same for magic keyboards, mice and touchpad of different generations. Truth to be told, any cheap device that wouldn’t work reliably (I can think of a few BT headphones in the past) I just tossed or returned when possible.
mbroncano··on New Mac Pro Tech Specs
I’ve been using exclusively BT keyboards and mice for 10+ years ... what’s exactly wrong with them?
mbroncano··on “Did You Eat the Whole Cake?” On Learning Estonian
That doesn’t seem to be a problem with French or Spanish, arguably also quite popular.
mbroncano··on California bans private prisons
For each chemo session, our hospital is currently charging around $25k. A complete breast cancer treatment, including surgery and reconstruction, is $500k or so.

This is through insurance. Cash payment is negotiable and possibly much less, but that’s negotiated case per case.
