mbar84··on The Decline of Usability (2020)
One of the most wonderful developments of the last decade is the "Command Palette" UX pattern. You can have a tool driven predominantly by keyboard and also make all the keyboard shortcuts discoverable (display them next to the command in the dropdown). Maybe just let the UX guys do whatever they want, just so long as I can press Ctrl-K and type the first letters of the command I want to do.
mbar84··on In Germany, 27 are in 'preventive detention' b/c they might do climate protests
"Might do" ?

Is it not the case, that they have declared their intent to commit crimes and it is perfectly plausible that they would?

mbar84··on When tech says ‘no’
I've come to the conclusion that the only way to convince these people that voting machines are a bad idea is to actually engage in election manipulation and then uncover it after the election has already been accepted. Consequences are the only thing they understand.
mbar84··on Electricity Maps
Reading this is enormously frustrating. People have been shouting at the top of their lungs, that this will be the inevitable outcome of policy in Germany. Energy policy in Germany has no chance to accomplish its stated goals and is costing people a fortune.

mbar84··on Ask vs. Guess Culture

mbar84··on Corporate profits account for almost half the increase in Europe’s inflation
This article offers an incorrect causal explanation. Profits don't account for anything. Profits are the result of other effects. Corporations always try to maximise profits. If their profits are higher than previously, the question is, why can they get away with it? Why is competition not eliminating the profits? Why is the price for labour not rising together with other prices?

The explanation is: When the quantity of money is expanded, prices don't all rise equally fast. There is a lag for certain adjustments, depending on how often a price is renegotiated and how distant the parties are from the financial system.

mbar84··on Google warns its own employees: Do not use code generated by Bard
I do wonder if Google included their own monorepo codebase in the training data.
mbar84··on YouTube, the jewel of the internet
Completely agree. You need to feed the algorithm the right data. Spend a little time to explicitly tell it to not recommend specific content and channels. You see a channel doing outrage porn (X destroys Y!) and clickbait thumbnails that tell you exactly zero about the content, shallow content mill: Right click -> Don't recommend channel. Completely ignore Shorts. Pay for youtube premium to get rid of ads. Add extensions: Sponsorblock and Video Speed Controller.
mbar84··on Korean as a Concatenative, Stack-Oriented Language (2017)
Can you say, if this makes it more difficult to tell jokes?
mbar84··on I wish GPT4 had never happened
When circumstances change, people's behaviour must change. People don't like to change, some even fear change. If some people are insulated from reality, such that they don't need to change, other people will have to bare the cost. There is no economic system that can spare us from the need to adapt.
mbar84··on Ask HN: How are you using GPT to be productive?
I imagine there is significant value alone from stating your situation explicitly in writing.
mbar84··on UK: Food inflation rises to 18.2% as it hits highest rate in over 45 years
aka. "shrinkflation": Same price, less product.
mbar84··on French workers protest plan to increase retirement age
To prepare for retirement, you have two options:

1. Have children and treat them well. 2. Save and invest, so capital is available for the few children of the next generation to work with.

As long as millennials are doing option 2. there isn't a problem. If they rely on the pension system, then that would be a problem.

mbar84··on High-Earning Men Are Cutting Back on Their Working Hours
Who is John Galt?
mbar84··on Ask HN: Why Is Everything Declining?
I attribute it primarily to lack of appreciation for the foundation of civilization: Private property.

Violations of private property are primarily done through the state, which socializes costs and thereby both reduces incentives for responsible behaviour and increases incentives to be dependent and irresponsible. Less wealth is created, more wealth is squandered.

Many who raise democracy to an practically religious status also contribute to this decline, as it overshadows much more important cultural values, such as free and open public discourse, decentralized / local governance and of course private property. It's almost as if, as long as you're in the majority, anything goes, perverse incentives be damned.

We didn't start the fire. The world's been always burning, since the world's been turnin'.

mbar84··on Sexual loneliness: A neglected public health problem?
> We're wandering through a desert looking for an oasis; they're swimming through a lake of garbage looking for an intact water bottle.

I think it's more like, we're both in a corner store and while many men can't afford something to eat, though it's right in front of them; women won't stop looking before they find Caviar and a bottle of Champaign.

mbar84··on Ask HN: I'm 40 and feel my mental ability declining. Programming seems harder.
I'm almost 40 and I'm much more aware of the circumstances when my mental ability are worse. If I want to be at my peak, sleep well, not have breakfast, drink a cup of coffee. Under these circumstances I think I may have better mental ability than 10 years ago.
mbar84··on Conversation skills essentials
There once was a boy named Danny Day, he always maintained his right of way, he was right, dead right, as he drove along, but he's just as dead, as if he were wrong.
mbar84··on Conversation skills essentials
Going by the diagram in the article, I hope you can see, that the approach in the Church of Strong Civility is better able to scale. As a devotee of the Church of Interruption, I hope you can recognize, that too many participants can lead to an overload of the main audio bus (too many interruptions). This reduces the efficiency of communication.

In the CoSC there are side channels (one for each participant), via which they can signal their desire to speak. Once the current speaker has finished, the participants who desire to speak can negotiate the next turn (e.g. by a rule that the person who has talked least may go first). This way, constant collisions on the main audio bus can be avoided.

mbar84··on Sergey Brin: Irate Call from Steve Jobs
Ah, the world is not perfect, let's bring to life a monopoly on violence, what could go wrong!
mbar84··on Notepad Calculator
It's a great idea. I think it's one part of a great tool that would give excel a real run for its money. If you can create, populate and reference tables, I think you'd have a real winner.
mbar84··on The situation at LastPass may be worse than they are letting on
On a balance of risks, your your former employer may have made the right call. The issue is, do you use something that isn't perfect but everybody can use, or do have a substantial portion of tech illiterate people not use anything, which would be an even greater risk.
mbar84··on U.S. to announce major breakthrough in zero-carbon nuclear fusion energy
The question is, in terms of energy input, are we talking about Q-total or Q-plasma? Based on the video by Sabine Hossenfelder, my guess would be, the announcement references Q-plasma. That would mean that the announcement is a motte-and-baily miscommunication, as it promises much more than people are lead to read into it.

Motte: We got more energy out than we put in. Bailey: Oh, what we really meant is, more energy was produced, than was put into the plasma, though we didn't actually capture any energy and also, there was actually a great deal of energy also needed to run all the ancillary systems to keep the plasma confined.

How close is nuclear fusion power? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LJ4W1g-6JiY

mbar84··on Ask HN: Do you recall any book or course that made a topic finally click?
Economics in One Lesson by Henry Hazlitt.

mbar84··on Fake Books

mbar84··on Someday aliens will land and all will be fine until we explain our calendar
If Julius Caesar had set the leap year rule to be for every year divisible by 5 and/or 19, We would still be using that calendar today. Also would be nice if he had set New Year to be on the winter solstice.
mbar84··on Don’t think to write, write to think
I think Feynman would have loved excalidraw. I find it very difficult to sort my thinking in a text editor, even though I find the mechanical process of writing is much better there.

I'd say there's still quite some room left here for authoring tools, but excalidraw + vim is the best I have atm.
