maybird··on Introducing Facebook Camera
I see this as an inflection point for them. Pivot or die. Hopefully they'll do the former, and reach new heights.
maybird··on Old Farts Know How to Code
The problem is that older folks are very few and far between.

You're right about shipping I think. My experience is only anecdotal, but older people, for me, have been the difference between shipping and floundering.

maybird··on Maddox on Link-Baiting Aggregation Sites
Not to defend ranker.com, but maybe maddox@xmission.com really isn't in their database.

It's possible that someone is automatically forwarding a different address to maddox's inbox.

It'd be worth examining the SMTP header of one of these messages and tracing back the ownership of each relay.

Indeed. I hope "brogrammers" take note.
maybird··on Facebook Bankers Secretly Cut FB Revenue Estimates In Middle Of IPO Roadshow
I really don't want to mentally lump Facebook with Groupon. I hope we hear an official statement about this from Facebook.
maybird··on Things we've done wrong with our startup
My boss is a workaholic. I didn't think much of it at first. It's his company, I understand why he's putting so much effort into it.

But it didn't take too long to start feeling the pressure from everyone to put in crazy hours like he is.. even if he's the sole owner and no one else but him will profit from it directly.

maybird··on Things we've done wrong with our startup

I wrote exponentially worse and worse code as the hours
went on and then pushed right as I left for the “real
life” component. None of that code ended up working.
If only my boss would understand this.

I'm confused by this "greenshoe" business.

To prevent the price of something from falling, you can:

(1) Increase its demand.

(2) Decrease its supply.

Which one does the "greenshoe" do?

Non-French here, but trying to learn. What's the difference between "manger le fromage" and "manger du fromage"?

I just tested this under OSX and had no problem, so this is probably Windows-only.

maybird··on What's That Programming Language?
I second that. I'd also love to see a tool which would allow you to provide a binary and tell you what built it.
maybird··on FreeBSD 10 to use Clang, GCC will be deprecated
iOS.

Apple won't allow us to submit apps built with Xcode 4.1 forever. (4.1 was the last to include GCC.)

maybird··on FreeBSD 10 to use Clang, GCC will be deprecated
I'm in the same boat. A large code base relying on GCC and Boost heavily.

The code builds with Clang, but the runtime crashes deep inside Boost.

It's been very frustrating because we're well past the point where refactoring-out Boost would be cost effective.

maybird··on The 144 Million Dollar Button
That's a real shame.

The client's impression of the wait staff is greatly influenced by the kitchen staff. That's why we would split our tips.

maybird··on The 144 Million Dollar Button
Or maybe skip the fancy UIs and recommend paying cash for tips?

As someone who's worked service jobs in my youth, I'd really like to stress the importance of cash over CC tips.

Pay is usually abysmal and CC tips don't always make it into the pockets of the people who deserve it, not to mention the delay.

Also, cash is easier to split when necessary. For example, between the wait staff and the kitchen staff.

So please always tip in cash.

maybird··on The 40-hour Experiment

The idea of working 80 hours a week means you’re doing
something really inefficiently, or you’re just warming
your ass at the office on Facebook, Twitter or Youtube.
I've seen this so many times!

A friend of mine told me his employer's solution was this: Block all three, along with Reddit, imgur, and the likes. Then only allow one public computer with unrestricted access. This one computer is on a standing desk, in a busy hallway.

I didn't think it would work with the prevalence of smartphones, but apparently it has. Having unrestricted access from all desktops just made it too easy.

It's a shame humans don't have more self control.

maybird··on Google Wins Huge UDRP For Hundreds of Domain Names
I don't know what the etiquette is for re-posting a blog comment, but this raises a good question:

So can Royal Bank of Scotland now launch a UDRP against
  Google for owning googleroyalbankofscotland.com?
Anyone knows the answer to this?
maybird··on Employee Referral Bonuses Are Pants on Head Stupid

This third category is made up completely from the people
the employee wouldn’t have referred if the bonus didn’t
  exist.
Maybe the candidate has multiple options and the person referring them will give them a kickback for taking the job.
maybird··on Git-based fabric deploys are awesome

One other valid problem I've heard raised about git-based
deploys is that you can end up with cruft in your working
copy that sticks around like .pyc files where the
original .py file is deleted and there is the chance that
this file could still be imported even though the
  original .py was deleted.
I'm shocked. If a py file is modified, the pyc is rebuilt. So we know it's poking at the original source file. Why not fail to import if the original source is missing?

Maybe this behavior is meant to support binary-only distribution of Python applications, but there really should be an option to override this behavior.

Edit: Did a bit more research and found this:

(1) http://docs.python.org/release/1.5.1p1/tut/node43.html

It is possible to have a file called "spam.pyc" without
a module "spam.py" in the same module. This can be used
to distribute a library of Python code in a form that is
  moderately hard to reverse engineer.
Makes sense.

(2) http://docs.python.org/using/cmdline.html#cmdoption-B

If given, Python won’t try to write .pyc or .pyo files
on the import of source modules.
So you can mitigate that behavior by removing existing pyc files and using "-B".
maybird··on J.P. Morgan Flags $2 Billion Trading Loss

The Journal reported in April that hedge funds and other
investors were making bets in the credit-default swap
markets to take advantage of volatility that stemmed from
the trades done by Mr. Iksil, who worked out of the Chief
  Investment Office.
After everything that's happened, they're still allowed to play the CDS lottery? I'm really disappointed regulators haven't put a stop to this.

For a great insight into the role of CDS'es in the recent economic events, I highly recommend this documentary:
