max47··on Satellite data show electromagnetic anomalies 19 days before Turkey earthquake
Imagine what health care would look like if scientists and doctors shared that attitude.

This discussion is not about if the current prediction methods are good or not, it's about if we should even try to develop these methods to begin with. How many cancer researchers would there be today if you had to cure one yourself, with no grants or outside ressources before you are even allowed to enter the field? Probably not a lot.

Your argument is a self fullfilling profecy. You justify preventing them to research how to predict earthquake by saying that they have not already predicted one.

Maybe in a couple of decades we will find out that many of the big ones could have been very easily predicted, maybe not. The way things are going, we will never know.

max47··on Satellite data show electromagnetic anomalies 19 days before Turkey earthquake
How do you expect someone to come up with a good answer to that question with proper sources to back them up if this subject is blacklisted and no one can get grants or ressources to do the research? Maybe there is a pattern that can predict it, but we won't know if the people who have access to all of the data and knowledge are being told it will kill their career if they try to find the answers.
max47··on Smart devices are turning out to be a poor investment
>Initially, when they were new, also Siri, Alexa and Google Home felt mindblowing and "truly like the future".

Strong disagree on that one. It was difficult to get them to do simple things like give the weather if a different location, play the right song. Even asking what time it is wasn't guaranteed to give you an answer if you didn't ask the right way. The marketting material made it sound great but the first hand experience was very underwhelming. The biggest use case at launch was making it say funny things.

max47··on Stable Diffusion 3
Isn't it even more racist to replace them in a picture? Being told that your skin colour is too offensive to show sounds a lot worse to me than calling them "white" considering their skin is very white
max47··on Science fiction authors were excluded from awards for fear of offending China
I meant the people's reaction look like a South Park episode, not china's actions. The way they get hysterical and claim that you could spend years in jails for stupid things like having a picture of Winnie the Pooh on your phone. And it never stops, every couple of months, there is a new made up and/or exagerated thing about china that Americans are ultra confident about even if they have never been to china or talked to a Chinese person. This week for exemple, politicians (not trump this time) on tv were talking about how most Chinese migrant are ccp spies/soldiers.
max47··on Science fiction authors were excluded from awards for fear of offending China
The fear people have on NH about China is >10x worse than what real chinese people living in China feel about their own government. After living there for a while, the things I hear on US social media sounds like it came strait out of a South Park parody. Many of the supposedly high crimes that may get you jailed or killed (according to Americans) are the equivalent of jaywalking in New York City.
max47··on Peregrine moon lander suffers anomaly after launch
They were sending dogecoins. Both the coin and “sending it to the moon” were meant to be a joke in the first place.
max47··on Two photographers captured the same millisecond in time (2018)
But it’s the building owner who would have the copyright, not whoever was the first person to have it somewhere in the background of a picture
max47··on The elderly are becoming homeless at a rate not seen since the Great Depression
As long as they don’t leave it empty, they are not limiting the stock. Changing the name on a piece of paper doesn’t magically creates new houses out of thin air.
max47··on YouTube no longer suggests videos if your ‘watch history’ is turned off

max47··on Three Companies Impersonated Millions to Influence Internet Policy
That doesn’t really apply to this debate. Netflix isn’t sending data back and forth through the ISP’s network just for their own fun and their own benefit. They send the data because the ISP’s client specifically asked for it and is paying for that bandwidth. They are also likely paying for far less bandwidth than the low bitrate Netflix is using. TV streaming is also arguably one of the main reason why the end user bought a high speed internet connection in the place.
max47··on Samsung “space zoom” moon shots are fake, and here is the proof
canon is also a great choice because the ef mount is larger than most other dslr and it can fit pretty much every dslr lens that exists (vintage and new) without the need for an expense adapter that has optical elements. You can even 3d print them
max47··on “Healthy obesity” doesn’t exist. It is unequivocally bad for you
Almost everyone I met (incl me when I was younger) who think that way never realized just how much food obese people eat at home. It's wayyy more than you think. They never tell the truth about it out of shame because they know how bad it looks to others.
max47··on “Healthy obesity” doesn’t exist. It is unequivocally bad for you
> this is why I will never get behind socialized healthcare...I'm not footing the bill for the increasing number of people who push these beliefs

Sadly, the US is paying as much per capita for healthcare as countries with free healthcare. A private system costs a lot more to run even when they are managed by people with good intentions.

max47··on We’ve filed a lawsuit challenging Stable Diffusion
Except that you can't recreate them. At least not without a process that would be similar to asking an artist to create a replica of a painting. Just because photoshop has the right color palet available to recreate art, it doesn't mean the software itself is one big massive copyright infrigement against every art piece that exist.
max47··on The Ethereum merge is done
With pow, the cash you burn on that mining farm is gone after you give up on your vote or your attack. With PoS, the simple act of being rich means you get more vote, you don't need to burn it or spend it. You even get richer while you do it
max47··on The Next Chapter for Learning on YouTube
YouTube alternatives sound great until you actually try them.

The best exemple is when youtubers leave for reasons related to monetization. They always came back when they foud out that not only do other platform don't pay them (without a pay wall) but good platform will actually charge them for the hosting. finding your own ads is also really fucking hard when google isn't doing it for you.

Free unlimited 4k@60 video hosting is a hard to beat when users are extremely hostile to paying for thing they used to have for free (look at the feedback from. Youtube premium)

max47··on Dutch antitrust authority fines Apple for fifth time

max47··on Spy camera detection using smartphone time-of-flight sensors
it technically works as advertised, that's why I didn't want to call them a complete scam. an IR LED + red filter does work to detect hidden cameras.
max47··on Apple will notify users about state-sponsored cybersecurity threats
You think I'm taking about BS gag orders or NDA agreements....

When we're talking CIA, you can't get your way out of it with a better lawyer of by paying a fine. It's a decade of jail waiting for you if you don't bend over and give them exactly what they want. You have no constitutional rights when it comes to national security. they are legally allowed to kill US citizens without having to get court approval if they think they are a threat to the nation.

max47··on Low interest rates in advanced countries have pushed money into real estate
> That said, some countries might experience their population plateauing sooner than others

And all of these countries (except japan/Switzerland) are planning to bring more immigrants in to make sure the population is always increasing faster. Something that most people in first world countries don't realise is that the entire population of their country is smaller than the number of millionaires in china+india. Even if all if america+EU became sterile, there would still be enough foreigners to buy more unit and push the bubble further if they open borders. And they would, because the entire economy depends on it.

max47··on Apple will notify users about state-sponsored cybersecurity threats
they'll only do it if the US government allows them to.

Like it or not, if they go against three-letter-agencies in the US, high ranked apple employees will spend years in jail based on the rulings of secret courts where all of your rights are irrelevant. The moment the cia says the word "terrorism", all your rights are gone regardless of how wrong the investigators might be. They can literally declare you guilty without you even knowing you were were accused of anything because according to them, national security is more important than the constitution.

they are on the same level as the ccp

max47··on Low interest rates in advanced countries have pushed money into real estate
land is the one thing almost never goes down because we can't create more of it. for almost every other aspect of our lives, they are alternative solution to the problem but you can't create more land. Building vertical to increase density is only kicking the can down the road in a context where the humain population is always increasing.
max47··on Low interest rates in advanced countries have pushed money into real estate
>n real estate creates nothing of value to society and instead serves only to artificially drive up the cost of shelter

And yet there is literally millions of people begging for a opportunity to get a unit in large/rich cities. If there was no value to it, why does everyone cares so much about living there?

If you truly believe what you say, than you better never ever complain about home prices. Paying 100$/ft² for a massive modern house in a shithole place is an option that is always there for you if you think location doesn't matter. But let me guess... you want to live in [insert big city near your location] but people richer than you also want to and they priced you out

just like the teachers who claim to know when students are teaching?

They all make the same speech but Somehow they never seem to know about it when 7 people in the class got a copy of test in advance and prepared answers. For every student who's bad a cheating and got caught, there is >15 that the teacher never knew about.

max47··on Spy camera detection using smartphone time-of-flight sensors
the knockoffs were widely available online (ebay/amazon/aliepress/DX) for a decade before this kickstarter existed.

The kickstater itself is a cheap knockoff that didn't bring any new feature or any new design elements. I was too lazy to do the research, but it wouldn't surprise me if they just rebranded a product offered on alibaba.

I would support them if they offered a superior design with a nice looking aluminum/Stainless/titanium case, made it more compact, or made it waterproof, etc. but they did nothing like that. They are offering the same cheap back plastic design that looks 95% like all the other cheap chinese knockoff.
max47··on Spy camera detection using smartphone time-of-flight sensors
that kickstarter campaign is borderline a scam. They have an msrp of 400$ for a Chinese gadget you can by for <10$ online. And no, their LEDs are not special and you can source better ones from digikey for less than 1$.
max47··on NFT's aren't the answer to the problems of digital art
what you are describing just proves that the blockchain adds absolutely no value to the art. You still have to rely on a piece of paper on which someone pinky swears they are the original owner. The blockchain doesn't make it more secure in any shape or form and you would have absolutely no way of knowing the picture I'm selling as an NFT was taken/created by me or stolen from reddit.
max47··on NFT's aren't the answer to the problems of digital art
it still doesn't solve anything. You have no way of knowing if the pixels were originally signed by the real artist or not.

The only reason it works right now is because that NFTs are so recent that you can just send a DM to artist's twitter to verify if the original set of crypto keys/wallet belong to them. When the artist himself is promoting it, it's not hard to figure out if it's genuine or not. But what happens in 10 years or if you can't trace the original artist?

How would you know if I took the picture myself or if I stole it from flicker? if reverse image search doesn't work, it would be impossible.

max47··on China to supercharge uranium race with 150 new nuclear reactors
> CO2 molecules have no nationality

if that's the case, why do you think american citizen deserve to pollute a lot more than Chinese citizen? why would being born inside US border somehow makes it ok to pollute more than if you were born inside china

By your logic, if China were to split in 150 small countries, they could pollute as much as they like because technically each of them would be low on the list of highest emitter.
