max-m··on Doom Running in Notepad at 60fps
As soon as I saw the title I remembered this submission:

max-m··on 4x4 ASCII Font (2016)
The "character canvas" includes the space between characters and rows. Think about it like you have a fixed 4x4 grid into which you copy the 4x4 bitmaps without the possibility to offset them to create whitespace between the characters.
max-m··on NASA's DART mission successfully collides with asteroid Dimorphos
As expected, DART was Dead on Arrival ;)

Now they have to pick up the pieces and see if they had an effect on the asteroids orbit.

max-m··on Bitwarden: Avoid at all costs (outage issue)
Personally I use the official KeePass 2 executable via Mono on my desktop. I would have given KeePassXC a chance but it lacks the trigger system or a simpler alternative. I use the trigger system to sync my local database with a copy on my server via the help of a shell script (because I couldn't get the SFTP / scp plugins to work properly). The trigger runs when the local database is being saved. As a first step it disables itself, as a last step it enables itself again. As a second step the trigger calls my script which downloads the database from my server. Then it runs the sync action against the freshly downloaded database and afterwards the trigger calls my script again and instructs it to upload the database to my server. I suppose this might be problematic if multiple devices try to change the remote file at the same time but that's nothing I have to worry about and other solutions like using Dropbox or other cloud storage solutions would run into some sort of problem as well (but at least you might be given the choice of which version to keep).

On my Android phone I use Keepass2Android and it's built-in SFTP support to open the remote database (and also keep a local offline-copy). When saving it seems to synchronize with the remote file first before uploading the file, so even if I change entries on both devices the copy on my server shouldn't lose any entries. But I haven't really tried to break it yet.

max-m··on Reverse Pull-Requests
I’m not entirely sure if I got this right, but this system sounds a bit … weird. Everything is “tested” in production and then, at some arbitrary time, another team does a code review of the code that’s already in production and possibly broken? It just seems completely backwards.

max-m··on Everyone seems to forget why GNOME and GNOME 3 and Unity happened
When Ubuntu first switched to Unity I hated it. But over time it got better and I got used to its concepts and I'm daily driving it to this day. Now I even fear the day Compiz and therefore Unity stop working - it has become my DE of choice. I love its space efficiency: the global menu bar and the local window menus (I have it configured to show the window menu when I hover the title bar) and the "task bar" on the left: I use my displays in landscape mode, so width is abundant but height is at a premium. The grid layout shortcuts just work, something that Gnome 3 couldn't really do when I last tried it a couple of years ago. I don't often use the HUD to activate menu entries, but it can be very nice for programs like GIMP when you remember the name of an entry but can't find it in all those submenus. I wish Canonical would still maintain it, over the years it seems to have regressed a bit. Nowadays some (I think mostly SDL2) applications tend to slow down the whole UI and window transitions "take forever". But apart from that it has served me well. So thank you and everyone who was involved with Unity!

All this talk about Gateway Timeouts made me curious:

> Gateway Timeout is a deep learning-based anomaly detection system. It detects anomalies by learning the probability distribution of normal traffic and comparing it to traffic that does not match the normal distribution.

max-m··on SerenityOS web browser passes Acid3 test
As far as I know the standards have changed in some regards, the browsers have been updated to reflect those changes but the Acid 3 test suite has not and therefore some tests fail under the current interpretation of the tested web standards.
max-m··on The Polygons of Éric's Chahi Another World
While working on my own implementation of the bytecode interpreter / VM, I built a little tool [1] to render the polygons outside of the game. It can load unpacked resource files of the game (the GOG version comes with uncompressed resource files for example, other versions need an external tool to extract them). It helped me to debug some issues with my renderer. Currently it's hosted in my private GitHub Pages repository, but the source code isn't obfuscated :)

There's also a demo of my (private) Another World interpreter compiled to WASM [2]. It bundles the game files of the DOS demo, which means the intro cannot be skipped. My native desktop version supports loading of files from multiple versions of the game (some, like the unofficial GBA version lack support for their music files). Some time in the future I'd like to add support for "uploaded" game files to the WASM version as well.

max-m··on Gameboy CT scan – design lessons learned
A couple years after the GBA SP (AGS-001) a new revision of it, the AGS-101, came to market. That revision used a backlit screen and the toggle button allowed you to switch between a dim and bright backlight mode. If my memory serves right games on that revision looked like they would on the original Nintendo DS. Obviously battery life took a significant hit compared to playing on the AGS-001 with the frontlight disabled.

max-m··on Show HN: I had some time yesterday so I made a GPT3 podcast to help you sleep
My dog fell asleep while I had episode 4 running (the end caught me by surprise, haha).

I mean, she would have fallen asleep anyway, I probably could not. The voice is a little unpleasant and I concentrate too much on the nonsensical stories. But I also can't really fall asleep when the TV is running, so YMMV.

max-m··on Another World: Genesis
While working on my own implementation of the bytecode interpreter last year I wrote a tool to inspect the polygon files [1]. It did help to find some bugs in my renderer code :) The tool needs unpacked data files like the ones found in the 20th Anniversary edition, but the files extracted from the BANK files works fine as well.

max-m··on Comb: Largest breach of all time leaked online with 3.2B records
I was told that this database also contains user credentials that were unknown to Have I Been Pwned, so maybe there were also some newer or lesser known breaches compiled in. In any case it is a valuable resource when you don't trust services like HIBP. That database contains some ancient user credentials of mine, I should probably check if family and friends are in there as well and if they are, urge them to change those passwords in case they are still using them somewhere.
max-m··on Comb: Largest breach of all time leaked online with 3.2B records
There is still a live thread on that forum that can be found via Google. I don't want to link to it because I'm not sure if that's allowed. Just search for the name of the forum followed by the abbreviation of the database and you will probably find it.

max-m··on Hetzner Cloud
From the FAQ [1]: > Can I install Windows? > Right now we are focusing on support for Linux as an operating system. If you wish, you may install Windows on your own, and we have seen successful installations done. However, we will not provide any support for Windows.

Currently I'm running a CX20 (primarily as mail server and for smaller private projects), thinking of switching to the CX21 (more RAM, less storage, cheaper) or the CX31 (way more RAM, more storage, price per month is around 2€ higher than the CX20). If someone has benchmarked them against the old offerings, I'd be happy to see the result. :)

max-m··on Show HN: 15-question language identification quiz
Well, it is correct PHP as it is missing an opening "<?php" tag. Therefore the interpreter skips this part and prints it out. :D

When interpreting as PHP however

  if(isset($_SESSION['uid']))
      header("Location: reg");
  }
is either missing an opening bracket or has got one too many closing brackets.
max-m··on Who moved my cheese, 1Password?
KeePass 2 has built in synchronization functions. But I have to admit that I never tried using it because I keep my database stored on a pen drive which I take with me if I know I need my stored passwords.

> KeePass 2.x features a powerful, built-in synchronization mechanism. Changes made in multiple copies of a database file can be merged safely.

> After synchronizing two files A and B, both A and B are up-to-date (i.e. KeePass saves the merged data to both locations when performing a synchronization).
