maverick_iceman··on Why Facebook Keeps Beating Every Rival: It’s the Network
Also, I don't see why a monopoly is inherently bad. If consumers actually benefit from it then what's the rationale in breaking it up? Moreover, sectors like social networking naturally favor monopolies; it's no good if your friends are scattered around 10 different sites.

The current understanding of US antitrust laws is similar. The Justice Department pursues antitrust actions only if the end consumer is being hurt.

maverick_iceman··on Theranos Agrees to Pay $4.65M in Arizona Refunds
True. Zuck, Page-Brin, Evan Spiegel all are pretty good looking. PG once said , "I can be tricked by anyone who looks like Mark Zuckerberg" (though he claims it was a joke)[1]. I think good looking people have a natural advantage when it comes to persuading VCs or getting the media interested in their companies.

Really? I have discussed Theranos with a lot of people, both on HN and elsewhere, and nobody ever referred to her gender. Not as if there's any dearth of unethical male executives. Fraud is an equal opportunity employer.
maverick_iceman··on USA Facts – Federal, state, and local data from government sources
I'm frustrated that the plots are not accompanied by definitions. In the US population charts, what is meant by divorce rate? Also I have no idea what "currently married" means.[1]

maverick_iceman··on Scientists Aging Faster Than Other Workers
What's your field? In most hard science fields it's impossible to get a professorship if you take a break from academia. (Unless you were somewhere like Microsoft Research / IBM Research, which are basically parts of academia.)
maverick_iceman··on Scientists Aging Faster Than Other Workers
Not surprising when you're past 40 before you even get tenure.

Life plus 75 is insane. A period of 25 years from the date of publication will be more than sufficient for copyright.

No, being able to get a ride to a black neighborhood in the middle of the night is the revolution.
maverick_iceman··on How real are real numbers? (2004)
>Real numbers are not necessary for continuity.

You know of any continuum that doesn't include the real numbers? That will contradict the continuum hypothesis.

Good for those of use who prefer chicken thigh with skin.

I doubt very much that they have the funds to pay for it. We're probably looking at a Puerto Rico style bailout, only this time much bigger.
maverick_iceman··on How real are real numbers? (2004)
Our best theories, General Relativity and the Standard Model, say that the world is a continuum.

maverick_iceman··on Uber banned in all of Italy
I'm not an American and I completely support Uber. They did a great thing to break up the taxi cartel. Most of these laws are results of regulatory capture. They lead to an inefficient market and price gouging.

Also just because a law is in the law book doesn't make it sacrosanct. Think about the Jim Crow laws before the Civil Rights movement.

maverick_iceman··on Uber banned in all of Italy
As usual, politicians kill a cheap, customer-friendly service to save an entrenched monopoly. If the horse cart owners were this smart, we never would have had the automobile revolution.

maverick_iceman··on Former Google VP Starts a Company Promising Clean and Safe Nuclear Energy
Couldn't agree more. Chernobyl killed 28 and both Three Mile and Fukushima killed 0. Still people are so afraid of nuclear reactors. This and the opposition to GMO food show that pseudoscientific scaremongering is extremely effective in a scientifically illiterate population.

I assumed whiskey. That's like Indian national drink.
maverick_iceman··on Horlicks, a drink Brits go to bed with and Indians wake up with
Huh, I always assumed Horlicks (and Complan) were health drinks. Because of the pervasive advertising I didn't even question this claim. Now I feel pretty stupid.
