Yea even windows laptops suffer for similar reasons. Bad drivers (esp from discrete GPUs) can cause DPC latency that’s near impossible to tame

I pretty much agree with all the people who replied. VSTs with heterogeneous interfaces, windowing issues, and having to use a mouse all just get in the way of making music for me. Obviously you wouldn’t produce / master some serious but if you’re jamming it’s leagues better imo

I agree you won’t find a DAW as powerful, but some of the purpose built DAWs are so much fun. Loopy Pro you can build whatever interface you want via widgets.

And while VSTs don’t run, the AUv3s on the App Store tend to be much cheaper.

If for nothing else, I think it’s an excellent replacement for a guitar effects processor like Helix. Plus everything is backed up / restorable and you don’t have to suffer with a knob-based interface

Music production is the killer feature that benefits a lot from CPU performance.

I only recently bought an iPad for the first time this year after realizing this was feasible. I’ve always preferred digital music workflows, but hated dealing with a laptop and DAW. iOS supports AUv3 plugins and cross app audio, so it’s pretty much a full DAW experience (I use loopy pro). The form factor forces AUv3 devs to design smarter interfaces.

Plus, I dislike using the iPad for literally anything else, so I’m less likely to get distracted :)

LLMs are uniquely bad at writing nix configs I've found. The top models all regularly hallucinate options

Really useful for debugging though

mauflows··on Some thoughts on LLMs and software development
I made something similar that uses alacritty / llm / tmux. The referenced script is also in the repo

mauflows··on How I like to install NixOS (declaratively)
Here's my own repo with a very similar setup! https://github.com/mjmaurer/infra

I build the ISO via a Github action as well. The biggest pain point is adding / removing disks after initial install, which I do imperatively (but still disko for mounting / fstab equivalent)

I'm curious how your team ended up doing this. We settled on Nix with flakes after some pain with Docker / RStudio Server.

Curious to learn more. Did you make these changes by just switching jobs? Did education precede it?

mauflows··on Finding a therapist who takes your insurance can be nearly impossible
My brief insurance experience with Medicaid was the best I ever had. It was through State of NY. I happened to break my wrist during that time. It was easy to find a doctor, low/no copays or deductible, and they were comparatively easy to contact.

Every other insurance company I've dealt with has actively cost me money, time and unnecessary pain through ineptitude or beurocracy. My FAANG healthcare was good, but had relatively fewer health issues

mauflows··on Awsviz.dev simplifying AWS IAM policies
It's funny, because AWS devs are also a bit guilty of slamming admin credentials and calling it a day.

I was testing out sagemaker studio. I just did the quick setup wizard and the default managed execution role was insanely permissive. I believe read/write to all of the accounts S3 buckets and broad List* for account resources. There are multiple parts of the documentation that also recommended you use this role. It seemed especially wild for a product with so many ways to access. we have good account hygiene but still

This doesn't account for the carbon cost of fixing nitrogen for fertilizer to grow corn in monocultures

Or the unused manure, nitrogen runoff, methane from cows

mauflows··on Historic fertilizer crunch threatens food security
Fair point! Thanks for the perspective
mauflows··on Historic fertilizer crunch threatens food security
I never said humans can eat grass.

The vast majority of ruminants are fed corn and soy. If they were all to eat grass we'd be able to produce much less meat than we currently do, and also use much more land

mauflows··on Historic fertilizer crunch threatens food security
> We do if we want everyone to eat

This is not true. There is plenty of food, especially if we put all resources we currently feed livestock into feeding humans.

mauflows··on Historic fertilizer crunch threatens food security
We don't need meat.

And there are many price and institutional barriers to completely grass fed cattle. The primary being that slaughter is centralized to FSIS inspected facilities where most non-poultry spend their final weeks packed in eating soy and corn.

> as if you're "doing it right" you don't even know what values it's going to apply until after it's applied them. It can't be idempotent because Terraform

what do you mean by this? 'terraform apply' runs plan first, and tells me the diff from the expected state. Then it asks me if I want to reconcile it.

I agree with the rest tho
