mattw2121··on Show HN: Google Analytics alternative with the most generous free tier
This is exactly why I ignore the GDPR.
mattw2121··on I worked at Google for -10 days
Never put in notice until background checks and all on boarding paperwork is 100% complete. Putting in notice on an offer letter is premature and, unfortunately, leads to bad results.

Also used in Harvard's, excellent, CS50. I recommend this for any middle or high schoolers thinking about a career in tech.

mattw2121··on Ocean Farming: Seaweed is having its moment in the sun
Their seen as a liberal, left-wing food. Right-wingers will say something like "Those kale eating liberals."
mattw2121··on Just Write
I recently started a blog after years of thinking about starting one. I've only written a couple of posts so far, but it's been very satisfying. No one else may ever read them, but writing down the words from my head has helped complete my internal thoughts. I usually walk around with 3-4 internal "blog posts" in my head that are just milling around inside my head. Putting these down into an actual blog has filled some void that I didn't even know I had.
mattw2121··on Hackers claim they breached T-Mobile more than 100 times in 2022
I trust Krebs even more. He messed up, he knows it, and he's motivated to make sure it doesn't happen again.
mattw2121··on 1 in 6 retirees are considering returning to work, and 53% want remote positions
"For this campaign, we surveyed 930 Americans to explore their retirement plans. Among them, 16% were retired, 22% were still working, and 62% were retirees who had returned to work."

So, 149 of those surveyed were retired. Of those 149, 25 (1 in 6) are considering returning to work. 13 of those want remote positions.

mattw2121··on Eggspensive
Now you've given me something to ponder on the entire day -- why do the Walmarts within 10 miles of me have different prices? Some at $3.23 and others at $2.42. A 28% difference. Do other products have this same price difference? Are some stores consistently priced lower and should I shop at those instead of the one I go to?
mattw2121··on NIO reveals aggressive plan to add 1,000 swap stations in 2023
I'm wondering if a solution to the "I don't want a subpar battery swapped into my vehicle" problem is simply to not own the battery? What if I could be sold a car and then just lease the battery as a service? Then I just visit a swap station and don't care about the battery I receive.
mattw2121··on American drivers have a blinding headlight problem
One issue is lifted trucks.
mattw2121··on After Callous Layoffs, Workers Are Done with the Full-Time Work
Workers aren't done with full-time work. Workers answered a survey saying that they are disillusioned with the idea of full-time work. In their idea of a perfect world, they would do freelance and not tie themselves to one employer. What would be really interesting is to follow up with those 109 that were actually laid off and see where they land. I'd wager 95% of them continue with full-time work, despite their answers on this survey.
mattw2121··on Yahoo is making a return to search
Absolutely agree. I loved DMOZ and was a faithful volunteer for several years. Maybe the time has past and it would be too ripe for gaming the system. Finding dedicated volunteers that "stick to the mission" would be the key. Not sure how possible that is in today's world. Back then we didn't really think about providing this free labor to some company. We were just grateful that someone was hosting such a thing and we had the chance to contribute.

mattw2121··on I went through a period where I loaned money to anyone that asked me
Cue all previous debts being paid back to John Carmack so that their latest business venture gets some free marketing.
mattw2121··on Mozilla acquires the team behind Pulse, an automated status updater for Slack
I am, self admittedly, completely out of touch with the start up culture. I work outside of it and have no experience in it. I simply can't understand how Pulse has raised 4.7 million dollars to create automated slack status updates. Even more, I can't understand why Pulse has made three acquisitions earlier this year, with that 4.7 million dollars, in order to accomplish that goal.
mattw2121··on Brazil seizes iPhones from stores due to free charger requirement
No, I don't assume that. I assume that if the chargers are included that the base price of the item would be higher. If they included the chargers (or lightbulbs) the cost of item would be higher in Brazil. Is that what you want?
mattw2121··on Brazil seizes iPhones from stores due to free charger requirement
I just bought a light fixture a few days ago. No bulbs came with it. I also just bought a new pair of wireless earbuds, and no power brick came with it. In both cases, it would have been nice, and saved me the extra expense, but a government mandate to force manufacturers to include them?
mattw2121··on Show HN: I made a pretty relaxing puzzle game
Thanks for creating and sharing. I really like it. I would like a Easy, Hard, and Insane mode with increasing # of tiles.
mattw2121··on Barclays using TeamViewer font to warn customers
I can confirm 100% that there are banks checking to see if teamviewer ports are open.
mattw2121··on Do you ever feel like you've had enough of working in the IT industry?
I'm in a similar, but slightly different place. I've been in technology roles for 28 years. I've been at my current company for the large majority of those years. For me it's not the technology that I've lost interest in, but all the other parts. The political squabbles, the red tape, the broken processes, and the lack of competency in general. If I could just concentrate on the technology, and deliver great products, I'd be in a much happier place.

I believe a significant part of my problem is that all those things I'm not a fan of come with the seniority I have. I'd be happier, work-wise, as a junior dev without those responsibilities. My lifestyle, unfortunately, doesn't support such a move.

mattw2121··on Colleges and sports-betting companies ‘caesarized’ campus life
If the general population cared as much for education as much as they do their high school and college sports, we'd fix our education problems overnight. We can defund anything you want in our public high schools, but touch the football team and watch out.
mattw2121··on Carvana to cut 1,500 jobs as online auto dealer’s troubles mount
I've purchased 2 vehicles through Carvana, and honestly the process was fantastic. I feel I got a fair deal on both vehicles, the quality was good, and everything as advertised. I did all the paperwork online and when I showed up to pick the car up was in and out in just a few minutes.

The only problem I had was that the delivery tower didn't work when I dropped the coin in both times. First time the car was for me and I didn't really care. The second time it was for my son I would have really liked their gimmick to work.

mattw2121··on Speed traps have no long-term effect on speeding: study
Agreed. But I would think that a speed trap would slow some people down, not all people. Lots of reasons for that, such as people unaware there was a speed trap there previously, people forgetting, etc.

I know that areas in my town that are well known for speed traps definitely have a lower occurrence of people speeding. On a neighborhood road near my house we had a really bad problem with speeders. Over the course of several months, there were numerous speed traps. Today, there are less speeders than before.

mattw2121··on Speed traps have no long-term effect on speeding: study
This entire article is predicated on a local college student who measured speeds after the speed trap happened. That student then concluded that the speed trap was ineffective. Shouldn't he have also measured speeds prior to the speed trap?

mattw2121··on Police don't trust Apple's Find My to retrieve missing MacBook shown next door
I'm not sure how someone would approach that situation. But I can say that if someone comes to my door and accuses me of being a thief, that interaction is not starting off well.
mattw2121··on Police don't trust Apple's Find My to retrieve missing MacBook shown next door
Have you missed the part where the neighbor is at my door accusing me of being a thief?
mattw2121··on Police don't trust Apple's Find My to retrieve missing MacBook shown next door
If one my neighbors came to my door and accused me of stealing a laptop, and then wanted to come into my house, I would also refuse them access. It isn't because I'm guilty, but because I don't take orders from my neighbor.
mattw2121··on The Golden Rule of Personal Finance
I've lived it as well. I have kids that live it. I have many friends that live it. Not sure why you need to resort to personal attacks, but, yes, it's obvious this discussion won't be fruitful.
