mattr47··on Germany bans digital doppelganger passport photos
Alcohol and cigarettes are always on the black market close to US military bases. Prices are always cheaper for service members and their family on base.
mattr47··on Colleges face student lawsuits seeking refunds after coronavirus closures
Aid = student loans.
mattr47··on US Air Force Space Security Challenge 2020: Hack-a-Sat
Army has direct commission positions open for cyber officers. 1LT up to LTC
mattr47··on Gravity assist maneuvers in space
As I try to wrap my brain around this could I assume then in order for this to work, on approach to the planet you have to be going in the same direction as its orbit?
mattr47··on A theory of Zoom fatigue
Same for me when I was stationed in West Germany in 1988 and then South Korea in 1991. 2-3 second delay and it cost around $2-$3/minute.

When I went back to South Korea in 1994 I was able to telnet into compuserve from on base, and then email back home.

mattr47··on Honda bucks industry trend by removing touchscreen controls
Nope, not anymore. Honeywell is making the new Gulfstream’s Symmetry Flight Deck for the G700 and it is touchscreen enabled.
mattr47··on Ask HN: What are the Online Investing Courses you like?
Khan Academy has some good personal finance videos. I really appreciated the videos on the US income tax system, as it explains very well how the system is progressive.
mattr47··on Human reproductive cloning: The curious incident of the dog in the night-time
But we could also apply that same ethical argument to an unborn baby, either genetic manipulation or abortion.
mattr47··on Breaking the Salary Sharing Taboo
I never understood this since I worked for the US military for 22 years. Everyone knew exactly what everyone else made, including extra duty pay, housing allowances, bonuses, etc.

We never bitched about the pay someone else was making. It was just the way it was.

mattr47··on Amish Hackers (2009)
That is part of the ritual law, something a follower/disciple of Jesus is not required to do. In fact as a follower of Jesus there are no rules other than 2. Love God and love others. Everything else flows from that as far as the instruction gave like Jesus did in his Sermon on the Mount.

Someone who has said, hey I declare that Jesus is my Lord and Savior, and truly believes it will of course do things. Not because they have to, but because they want to.

mattr47··on State Farm uses payment signature for HIPAA disclosure authorization
The e-sign on the actual document has the date/time and other PII. If it is on the document, it was signed by you.
mattr47··on State Farm uses payment signature for HIPAA disclosure authorization
In the US Military a lot of the finance, personnel action and evaluations are all e-signed. This requires your CAC (I'd card with embedded crypto) and your PIN. You insert the card into a reader and then type your pin. Document is then e-signed.
mattr47··on Ask HN: What's with all the unpaid interview projects?
Sure there are plenty of other professions. Pilots being the first one I can think of, as they require some type of checkride (flight exam) which will include an oral examination by the instructor/interviewer. And they don't get paid for taking that checkride.

Professional musicians have to prove themselves in auditions, CPAs, auto mechanics (good ones at least), etc. The list goes on.

mattr47··on Is a supermarket discount coupon worth giving away your privacy?
Source?
mattr47··on Crew Dragon launch escape demonstration
Your posts show an obvious bias against spaceX. Why the hate?
mattr47··on Let People Move to Jobs
I'd argue that the average person lives in order to work. It is ingrained in our minds from an early age, and why we have not gone down to a 15 hour week that was first proposed as the path ahead by Keynes in 1930.

In the FIRE community you would find that the majority of people are working in order to live.

Most people with consumer debt are trapped in this too.

mattr47··on Toyota will transform 175-acre Japan site into a ‘prototype city of the future’
Don't use the "but think of the children" argument. If makes no sense and just plays to emotions, rather than logic.
mattr47··on How to Get Vaccinated Without Parental Consent
That is not correct. While SOME religions teach this, not the majority.

Marin County, which is not a hot bed of any religion other than yoga pants, EV, soylent drinks etc, is the largest population of anti-vaxxers in California.

mattr47··on The first chosen-prefix collision for SHA-1
It's like locking my front door. I chose to lock the door to prevent random acts of burglary. But that lock will not stop someone determined from BnE my house.
mattr47··on The StingRay Is Why the 4th Amendment Was Written (2017)
If it is in my home then, yes, it will be shot on sight.
mattr47··on U.S. Navy bans TikTok from government-issued mobile devices
That is what all units in USSOCOM do. No personal cell phones, smart watches, etc allowed in the office. Guests have lock boxes outside main entrance to secure their phone.

About once a week security folks wander through the offices looking for phones with some type of detector. God help the person who brought their phone in.

mattr47··on People Who Do Not Exist Invade Facebook
The only thing a first term president cares about is a second term. Trump, Obama, Bush, Clinton etc all did this.
mattr47··on Facebook Discovers Fake AI-Generated Profiles
So more big brother stuff is what you are suggesting. How about people not rely on FB for news.
mattr47··on Facebook Discovers Fake AI-Generated Profiles
obviously someone must use FB for their news because that's all I read about in the news now.

Wait, that sounds circular. Bottom line is profit overrides truth most times now.

mattr47··on Facebook Discovers Fake AI-Generated Profiles
Any competent government intelligence agency. Every government puts their own spin on information.
mattr47··on 23andMe to share customer gene data with GlaxoSmithKline for $300M
That is not they way the courts see it I believe. My DNA is mine to do with as I please.
mattr47··on The town's so full of these confounded dials (195 BCE)
My wife and I just returned from our first cruise. We elected to not purchase any internet and also left our phones in our stateroom about half the time. We wore no watches, and just wandered on the ship, reading, watching the ocean, watching people, sleeping in the sun. It was marvelous!
mattr47··on Common Identification Standard for Federal Employees and Contractors (2004)
Ahh yes the CAC was great. I'd run to lunch off base and mistakenly leave my card in my laptop. Whoops, followed by explaining to guard what happened.

And then come back and find that card doesn't work. After an hour or so of pulling out and reinserting you discover a coworker took your card out and out a piece of clear tape over the chip.

What about possible contamination from something on or on the asteroid?
