mattpk··on GUIs should be fully keyboard-driven
The mouse is amazing, if you have a good sensor, a mousepad and no mouse acceleration. Not many have this setup, but those who do can wield their cursor with insane speed and accuracy. Consider top osu! or Starcraft players.
mattpk··on Geolocating a random island using geometry and CUDA programming
> NOTE: this is a genuine human work, didnt use LLM generation.

I'm sorry, but I don't believe this. The article reads like LLM text post-edited by an AI prompted to "write like a non-native English speaker, replace you for u, make errors, etc".

The other pages on your site are cough, "the smoking gun". For instance, your "Suckless, single binary, zero-dependency CUDA/C++ inference engine for NVIDIA's DVLT. Reconstructs 3D scenes from a handful of images (depth + rays + camera pose => point cloud), no python, no torch, no framework." project.

mattpk··on Solving a million-step LLM task with zero errors
Here is the pseudocode of MAKER:

  state = init_state()
  while state is not complete:
state = LLM("You are a helpful assistant. The rules and format of the game is [...]. The correct strategy to use at each step is [...]. The current state is [...]. Output the state after making the next move")
mattpk··on New Go-playing trick defeats world-class Go AI–but loses to human amateurs
This is a joke. The games that the “trick” AI “wins” are complete losses. The paper authors are claiming losses as wins by changing the rules in their favour to win on a technicality after the game, and not configuring the Go AI to even know about their rule.
mattpk··on Fight back against Google AMP (2018)
Google is also adding AMP to emails: https://amp.dev/about/email/
mattpk··on Backyard beekeeping in Japan
"Whereas refined sugar converts to fat, honey typically converts to energy"

Come on journalism

mattpk··on Toronto is experiencing a “brain gain”
"CBRE’s study found that a 500-employee firm renting a 75,000 square-foot space in Toronto would face estimated one-year operating costs of $30,224,259. Only Vancouver and Montreal were cheaper. The Bay Area, meanwhile, was the most expensive market for tech companies to operate, with a total estimated cost of $59,124,612.

It’s no wonder, then, that tech titans such as Google, Amazon, and Uber continue to expand their operations in the city."

The difference in rent is about the cost of hosting a single intern for a summer... Hardly a big factor.

mattpk··on How Zapier Reached $35M ARR
I read Indie Hackers, and it seems every non-technical founder on that site uses Zapier, and Stripe.
mattpk··on The Dangerous Fetishization of ‘Hustle Porn’
I agree with you for the most part, but there definitely is a toxic extreme of "hustle culture", in which people believe the sheer amount of "hard work" is the only coefficient.
mattpk··on The Growth of Reddit
They've recently added javascript that mimics system UI asking you if you want to open the content in the app or in the browser. I'm also almost certain that the loading bars on mobile web are artificial sleeps.
mattpk··on GM's [new] dress code is only two words
Here the title could have easily included the two words "Dress Appropriately", but forgoes a useful title to entice clicks.
mattpk··on Super Smash Bros. Melee: An “Untouchable” Agent
This guy is memeing.
mattpk··on People have spent over $1M buying virtual cats on the Ethereum blockchain
The devs have made the rendering algorithm secret. So even if you have the cat token, you can't know what it looks like unless you go through their front-end.
mattpk··on People have spent over $1M buying virtual cats on the Ethereum blockchain
From their FAQ (https://www.cryptokitties.co/faq):

The developers levy a 3.75% fee on every cat purchase. Doesn't really seem like a decentralized app in that regard.

mattpk··on Ask HN: What coding challenge sites should I try next?
Google Codejam has some great problems.

https://code.google.com/codejam/

mattpk··on Advent of Code 2017
I do codejam every year. Looks fun, will participate. First impressions tell me that runtime complexity won't as strict here however
mattpk··on AWS Cloud9 – Cloud Developer Environments
Isn't Cloud9 an e-sports organization too? There are two cloud9s, wondering where the Cloud[1-8]s went.
mattpk··on Ask HN: What tips do you have for weathering a recession?
That's a distorted view that you get from imagining if you had invested at the low of the last recession. Look at Japan's index, where it still hasn't caught up to the 1989 peak.
mattpk··on Waymo now testing its self-driving cars on public roads with no one at the wheel
The cars could be subject to vandalism, or at the very least really aggressive driving. The predictability of the driving and the lack of a driver is going to result in weird interactions with people.
mattpk··on One of the Biggest Bitcoin Exchanges Just Added 100,000 Users in a Single Day
I'd rather endure the FOMO when I don't understand its value than lose money when I had my doubts. Feels like it'll be the former for a while...
mattpk··on One of the Biggest Bitcoin Exchanges Just Added 100,000 Users in a Single Day
Yeah, only apply the transaction to the block chain when it leaves their system, e.g. PayPal.
mattpk··on Tell HN: Yahoo Finance has apparently killed its API
There are lots of talented Yahoo employees who read HN, and cringe at what teams on the other side of campus are doing.
mattpk··on Bitcoin Surges Past $7,000 to Extend Record Rally
Why? At the moment this seems like hassle, and possibly more expensive due to txn fees.
