mattpavelle··on GPT-OSS-120B runs on just 8GB VRAM & 64GB+ system RAM
Yes but the abliterated versions (those with partially removed guardrails) are significantly “dumber” so the trade off isn’t worthwhile imho.
mattpavelle··on Ch.at – A lightweight LLM chat service accessible through HTTP, SSH, DNS and API
This (or something very similar) was on X last week. The use case was so funny: using an LLM on an airplane connected to WiFi when you had not paid for WiFi … because DNS queries are allowed before paying :)
mattpavelle··on New Hacker Residency in Da Nang, Vietnam
Also went thru HF0 in SF. Had no problem coding 18 hours a day because I had lived in SF before and didn’t care about going outside :)

That said most of my batch was not from SF and they had no problem staying in and focusing.

So yeah I bet this works in Vietnam too.

mattpavelle··on Far – Sublime Inspired Find and Replace
The FAQ doesn’t say so anyone know how this is better than [RPL](https://linux.die.net/man/1/rpl) (which I’ve used for years)?
mattpavelle··on Apple introduces iPad Air with powerful M3 chip and new Magic Keyboard
I have the Chuwi Minibook X. I bought it because it fits on an airplane tray table and I can do real work on it (since it runs Windows 11). I flew a lot last fall and my iPad simply didn't work with Github and Notion - mobile Safari just didn't cut it (multitasking killed everything due to page reloads on iOS).

Running Firefox on the Minibook X works ... it's not great, but it works.

That said, I would pay top dollar for an 11" MacBook Air for sure.

mattpavelle··on Bayleaf · Building a low-profile wireless split keyboard
I love this. Well done. I've looked in the past for an ultra portable full sized keyboard (with a nice aesthetic) that I could throw in my pocket. I wonder if I could actually do any real work (not coding, of course) at a coffee shop with my iPhone in a stand and with a keyboard like that.
mattpavelle··on Constellation's Nuclear Plants to Provide Power for US Government Agencies
From TA

> Constellation and its partners will add approximately 1,100 MW of clean energy by 2028, enough energy to power over one million homes.

And

> A portion of the power will come from investments Constellation will make to increase output at its nuclear plants.

Anyone know where the rest of the promised energy comes from? Building a new plant takes a long time...

mattpavelle··on iTerm2 critical security release
Yeah #1 reduces the surface area for sure, #2 maybe not so much :)
mattpavelle··on iTerm2 critical security release
> A bug in the SSH integration feature caused input and output to be logged to a file on the remote host. This file, /tmp/framer.txt, may be readable by other users on the remote host.

Oof. This is nasty. Some folks may not have access to some machines that they've SSH'd into anymore where files like this may or may not exist.

mattpavelle··on The long (after)life of some of our old fileserver hardware
I went down a shallow rabbit hole (turns out https://www.reddit.com/r/uptimeporn/ exists ... of course) and found this:

mattpavelle··on Another simple online DNS query tool
I discovered https://dnsdumpster.com/ the other day and found it to be incredibly useful.
mattpavelle··on Instagram Is Over
8 month old article but here is the archive link: https://archive.is/lYheS
mattpavelle··on If AI chatbots are the future, I hate it
I remember in the early days of the web people said similar things about online shopping. The LL Bean catalog had more photos in higher resolution than their early e-commerce website, and you would call a phone number and talk to a person who knew the clothing in order to purchase from the catalog. No one would want to buy on a website…

We are in the beginning days here. I expect chatbot advances to similarly start with a lesser customer experience but to eclipse human service in the next decade or so.

We’ll all see, I guess :)

mattpavelle··on The First Animal Ever Found That Doesn't Need Oxygen to Survive
As noted in the article, the discovery is from 2020: https://english.tau.ac.il/news/no_oxygen

Funny that this article from 21 June 2024 is the one finally gaining traction.

mattpavelle··on Ask HN: How to handle user file uploads?
If you're looking for a good image optimization product, I've had excellent results from ImageOptim (I have no affiliation with them). They have a free Mac App, they have an API service, but also they kindly link to lots of other free similar products and services: https://imageoptim.com/versions.html

If you can spare the CPU cycles (depending on how you optimize, they can actually be expensive) and if your images will be downloaded frequently, your users will thank you.

mattpavelle··on Daniel Kahneman has died
For those who don't know who he is:

Professor Kahneman, who was long associated with Princeton University and lived in Manhattan, employed his training as a psychologist to advance what came to be called behavioral economics. The work, done largely in the 1970s, led to a rethinking of issues as far-flung as medical malpractice, international political negotiations and the evaluation of baseball talent, all of which he analyzed, mostly in collaboration with Amos Tversky, a Stanford cognitive psychologist who did groundbreaking work on human judgment and decision-making.

mattpavelle··on Mistral AI launches Mixtral-Next
For those unfamiliar with the LMSys interface:

Click/tap on "Direct Chat" in the top tab navigation and you can select "mistral-next" as model.

mattpavelle··on HTML hacks that shaped the Internet
What about those weird proprietary HTML tags (ilayer, blink, etc.( that were not supported by both IE and Netscape Navigator that on first release required you to write the tag inside an HTML comment so as not to break the competing browser?

That not hacky enough to make this list? :)

mattpavelle··on GitHub: Can no longer search code without being logged in
Agreed. If this is indeed a resource issue and they want to just block crawlers/bots/anonymous users from using lots of resources then perhaps having the old "less resource intense search" for users who aren't logged in and having the new "more resource intense search" for users who are logged in would be an improvement.
mattpavelle··on Apple's Trademark Exploit
Isn’t this describing people having “grey market” or worse products confiscated?

If the Apple logo is on a part then the manufacturer likely made that part for Apple under some agreement and the manufacturer is not permitted to make more of those exact pieces for other buyers.

Also if those pieces were made for Apple and didn’t pass QA, then the manufacturer can’t just sell them. They have agreements to destroy them.

If the Apple logo is on a thing then it’s a counterfeit someone is trying to pass off as real or an official part that “fell off a truck” or didn’t pass QA and should have been recycled or something…

If I legitimately paid a manufacturer for a compatible part to be made, I’d expect no logo on it

mattpavelle··on Nvidia to make Arm-based PC chips in major new challenge to Intel
Except OP said, "combined with great graphics performances" - the NUCs never had good graphics performance ... and their CPU performance was actually not that great either.
mattpavelle··on I Tracked an NYC Subway Rider's Movements with an MTA ‘Feature’
The thing I find most interesting is the final snippet of the article:

404 Media found that MTA’s trip history feature still works even when the user pays with Apple Pay. Apple told 404 Media it does not store or have access to the used card numbers, and does not provide these to merchants, including transit systems. Apple did not respond when asked to clarify how the MTA website feature works when a rider uses Apple Pay.

Per https://www.apple.com/apple-pay/ marketing, "When you make a purchase, Apple Pay uses a device-specific number and unique transaction code. So your card number is never stored on your device or on Apple servers. And when you pay, your card numbers are never shared by Apple with merchants. Your purchases stay private."

So something strange is going on for sure...

mattpavelle··on Show HN: Oblivus GPU Cloud – Affordable and scalable GPU servers from $0.29/hr
While vast.ai (see other comments) may not be a direct competitor, Runpod is. And Runpod is significantly cheaper https://www.runpod.io/gpu-instance/pricing

Runpod: A100 80GB for $1.990/hr

vs

Oblivus: A100 80GB for $2.41/hr

How do you justify being significantly more expensive?

mattpavelle··on Hardware microphone disconnect (2021)
macOS Lockdown Mode is not intended to be used by casual travelers to prevent unintended macOS unlocks.

Per Apple, “Lockdown Mode is an optional, extreme protection that's designed for the very few individuals who, because of who they are or what they do, might be personally targeted by some of the most sophisticated digital threats. Most people are never targeted by attacks of this nature.”

mattpavelle··on The world needs a non-profit search engine
This is a great point and a really hard problem to solve.

Do you think a Wikipedia style team of human reviewers with upvote/downvote capabilities can help reduce the SEO spam?

Obviously it’s hard to review the reviewers as well but Wikipedia seems to have done that.

mattpavelle··on The full story of the RSA hack can finally be told
I'd bet that they had most ports blocked and the attackers used multi-stage tunnels. Details like that probably just don't make it into a Wired article.
mattpavelle··on Betfair still hasn't paid out its 2020 Presidential Election market
This is actually a little more interesting than I originally assumed as the rules clearly state, "This market will be settled according to the candidate that has the most projected Electoral College votes won at the 2020 presidential election."

So they don't care about who actually ends up president. This is a pure bet on the voting results. I guess they think it prudent to wait and see if the Trump lawsuits hold any merit in the eyes of the courts.

mattpavelle··on Blissymbols
There was a nice Radiolab podcast about this: https://www.wnycstudios.org/podcasts/radiolab/segments/25719...

And also another podcast from NPR: https://www.wnycstudios.org/podcasts/notetoself/articles/cha...

I found the Radiolab one entertaining.

mattpavelle··on I Accidentally Uncovered a Nationwide Scam on Airbnb
Why don't companies like AirBNB who have a lot to lose (reputation wise) from a (small?) number of scammers sue those scammers into oblivion? Not only are they violating the TOS but they are committing fraud, and likely breaking a few other laws.

AirBNB must know who they are as those scammers are getting paid, right? It would be expensive for AirBNB (they would certainly lose money) but it can't cost more than the revenue they lose when people read articles like this?
