mattiss··on We will be able to live to 1,000
Is there any practical ways to apply some of this research today? It seems like there must be something out there we can be doing right now to help ward off aging?

Also what is the most promising research being done?

mattiss··on How hedge fund manager Steve Cohen averaged 30% returns for 18 years
Insider trading?
mattiss··on The world's most popular goals
Lift heavy weights. Eat as much as you can stomach, then eat some more. It isn't rocket science. Seriously just eat 5 huge meals a day and a protein shake before and after you workout. You will put on muscle like nobody's business. It's also the ONLY way to do it...
mattiss··on Review my startup: Akshell, a web application network
You should make this into a Django app that people can plugin to their admin interfaces. It would be a great tool for on the fly code development, bug fixes, etc.
mattiss··on Top Motivators For Developers (Hint: not money)
Unfortunately there is really no way to get these things as an employee, excluding Wall Street (fuck those guys :) ).

The logical conclusion is to start your own company.

mattiss··on Facebook has acquired Divvyshot (YC W09)

mattiss··on NY Pays 230 “Consultants” $722M For Project 7 Years Behind Schedule
You would be surprised. A lot of these guys write the most horrific code you will ever see.
mattiss··on [dead]
So so poignant. I guarantee you there are about 25 people with articles half-way written who are cursing your name...

Which office is this?
mattiss··on Memo to CEOs & Founders: Stop Being Such Cheap Bastards
5% is still pretty good. The fact is most people offer .1% -> 1%, which is practically worthless after dilution.
mattiss··on Memo to CEOs & Founders: Stop Being Such Cheap Bastards
I would never work at a startup without 1 or more of the following:

1.) Same pay as big-corp + much more interesting problem domain.

2.) More pay than big-corp scaled by the extra hours (not a 1:1 scaling)

3.) Large amount of equity. Enough that if the founders become tens of millionaires, I become a millionaire.

mattiss··on Making Undergrad CS More Enticing at Stanford
Classic. But no minority student group is complete without a witty t-shirt imprinted with a slogan worthy of the uniqueness of each member.
mattiss··on Software patents are the problem not the answer
You do realize that without patents large companies have FAR less incentive to buyout novel startups right?
mattiss··on Y Combinator Seattle Meetup, Feb 25
Sweet!
mattiss··on Does Education Make You Happy?
What are the results of Education vs. Income and Income vs. Happiness?
mattiss··on Things I've learned at Google so far
Weird. I thought this board was about entrepreneurship?
mattiss··on Things I've learned at Google so far
I mean this is interesting and all, but first page? Really? Does everybody want to work at Google that badly?
mattiss··on Will there be an iPad App gold rush?
Yep I definitely have considered that as well. Especially the possibility of RTS board games of some sort, as opposed to turn-based. I'm sure the Parker Bros would be well advised to make a Monopoly app.
mattiss··on Will there be an iPad App gold rush?
Games, games, and more games. Take advantage of the multitouch features.

As a side note, I'm developing a pretty awesome concept for a game in time for the iPad release, and could sure use some artists to partner with... Give me a shout if you are interested.

mattiss··on How would you serve 100,000 simultaneous comet requests with Node.js?
Out of curiousity, what client side JS library to people typically use for comet? I've used Orbited and found it pretty good albeit light on documentation.
mattiss··on Poor, Poor Child. You have no idea.
Maybe you should clarify your posting. It reads as

"Well I never had any problems learning to program. I am pretty much the smartest person in the world I guess. My "problem" is that I am so great I have too big of a head."

mattiss··on Poor, Poor Child. You have no idea.
Seriously dude....
mattiss··on Google’s China move: don’t be played
Exactly. Google is a publicly held corporation, the board is required by law to operate in the best interests of Google.

If keeping Google.cn would make Google a more profitable business, they would keep it. Granted the board can justify just about anything it does so it is not out of the realm of possibility that this is strictly based on morals. It just isn't likely.

mattiss··on The History of The Waite Group (in Mitch's own words)
Really loved this article. Only 3 points though? This is why I stopped looking at the "Top Rated" HN articles.
mattiss··on If You’re Nervous About Quitting Your Boring Job, Don’t Do It
In order to not be nervous this guy first has to finish is Ph.D from MIT. Then and ONLY then will he be able to start a successful company. I would bet that the vast majority of successful software entrepreneurs have much less than a Ph.d. In fact I wouldn't be surprised if even the relative percentages of Bachelors to Ph.ds starting successful companies is higher. In my experience a lot of people go for their PH.Ds because they don't know what they want to do and don't feel like getting a real job.
mattiss··on Ask HN: So HNers, whatd'ya get for Christmas?
That's pretty disgusting. Good on you that you are figuring out a noble way to get rid of it.
mattiss··on Amazon goes down; takes S3, Salesforce, Target, and others with them.
When Rackspace goes down and takes TechCrunch with them, the whole INTERNET goes down. When Amazon goes down, Salesforce, Target, and others...
mattiss··on Swiss Army Knife of Unix Debugging: lsof
Excellent! I think I know Unix pretty well, but it would be great if someone had a directory of common use scenarios that one could look through, rather than using Google and wading through horrible forum posts...
mattiss··on I hired 50 people today. This is what they look like
Something with stock manipulation could work. Buy a ton of options in some company, like Palm for instance. Then on the release of some hot new gadget, like the Pre, pay a ton of people to wait outside the doors of the vendors. Initial buzz will be that Palm is going to strike it big. Cash in.
mattiss··on What Will Future Space Battles Be Like?
One would hope that once we reach that level of technology, we will have gotten past wars....
