matthewfelgate··on Watch live as SpaceX crew carry out first-ever commercial spacewalk
Hopefully, but it's early days. Only SpaceX have achieved much yet.

Boeing and Blue Origin aren't doing great (yet?).

Hopefully Boeing Starliner can start shipping astronauts to, and more importantly, from the ISS.

Hopefully Blue Origina can fly, eventually.

matthewfelgate··on Watch live as SpaceX crew carry out first-ever commercial spacewalk
How was your walk?
matthewfelgate··on SpaceX Astronauts Begin Spacewalk, Putting New Spacesuits to Test
Very cool.

Imagine what you could do with a ship the size of Starship in the future!

matthewfelgate··on Do programmers need touch typing?
No, you don't have to touch type to be a programmer, or a good programmer.

But I highly recommend to anyone reading this to actually go and learn touch typing. It's free and there are lots of websites out there.

In terms of input effort to output, touch typing is one of the best things you can learn. You will literally use it every day of your working life.

matthewfelgate··on Google is a monopoly – the fix isn't obvious
My issue is of unfairness: you shouldn't do something to one company you haven't done to others.

Microsoft has been a too big company since the 1990s.

matthewfelgate··on Should the richest 1% – who gained $42T/decade – be taxed more?
The slogan "Tax the rich" is one of those ideas that seems straightforward and appealing at first glance, but it quickly falls apart under closer scrutiny. It's a simplistic solution often promoted by those who lack a deeper understanding of politics and economics. The notion that all of a country's problems can be solved by simply taking more money from "the rich" is fundamentally flawed.

First of all, the revenue generated from taxing the wealthy would be surprisingly small in comparison to the overall government budget. While some might argue that "every little bit helps," this ignores the negative consequences of increased taxes on high earners, a reality that many prefer to overlook. History has repeatedly shown that societies leaning too heavily on state control, as seen in failed communist experiments, suffer when individual initiative and enterprise are stifled.

Moreover, societal problems are complex, and simply throwing more money at them rarely yields meaningful results. Effective politics is about making informed choices and sound decisions, not resorting to oversimplified slogans. The hard left's reflexive call to "Tax the rich more!" as a catch-all solution is not just naïve—it's intellectually bankrupt.

matthewfelgate··on From 14 years old till 29, my experience with desktop Linux
I've run Ubuntu on my home computer since I was about 16. Now I'm 40. It has been great. Some frustrations. But a good experience. I'm surprised that more people don't take the leap and run Ubuntu.
matthewfelgate··on Catcher plays for both teams in same game
Interesting!

Could have been worse: if he played for both teams at the same time he would have had to hit the ball and then tried to catch it.

I wonder if a footballer has every played both legs of a Champions League knockout game for different teams? (I don't think this could happen because the transfer window wouldn't be open during that period.)

matthewfelgate··on NASA says data will guide whether astronauts return on troubled Starliner

  - I hope those astronauts get home safe.
  - Great if the Starliner can get them home eventually.
  - If not I am sure SpaceX can ferry them home.
  - Long term it's good for NASA to have multiple options for sending crew to space.
matthewfelgate··on 6th-generation Waymo Driver
Is Waymo profitable?
matthewfelgate··on Google is a monopoly – the fix isn't obvious
Then why pick on Google?
matthewfelgate··on Mark Simmons' ship joke named funniest of Edinburgh fringe
I didn't know that was only a British phrase.

What would an American say: you choked? you blew it?

matthewfelgate··on Google is a monopoly – the fix isn't obvious
Nonsense. It has no more power than Microsoft or Apple.
matthewfelgate··on Google is a monopoly – the fix isn't obvious
What about Microsoft?
matthewfelgate··on Google is a monopoly – the fix isn't obvious
Then do the same for Microsoft with Windows?
matthewfelgate··on Google is a monopoly – the fix isn't obvious
How is Google more of a Monopoly than Microsoft?
matthewfelgate··on DOJ may want to break up Google
How do Microsoft get away with being a Monopoly?! (And don't tell me about the wrist slap they got in the 1990s.)
matthewfelgate··on Waymo to begin testing on San Francisco freeways this week
This is great news. I expect this will open up many more routes. And hopefully more profit.
matthewfelgate··on Google TV Streamer: Our new entertainment and smart home hub
Can't Google come up with a better name than "Google TV Streamer"?! Give me a break...

Using AI to predict what people want to watch won't work.

I use Chromecast and what I want is a rechargeable remote control.

I want a decent user interface that makes it clear what I have selected.

Voice control I find absolutely useless.

matthewfelgate··on How not to say the wrong thing (2013)
Thanks for sharing because I found this very useful advice.
matthewfelgate··on The exponential growth of solar power will change the world
How have they dodged a bullet by not having nuclear?
matthewfelgate··on Battery electric vehicles lose their spark in Europe as hybrids steal the show
Is it because in the near future Battery Electric Vehicles are just more expensive than regular cars. Electric cars still seem to need significant government subsidies to make them competitive.

At least Hybrid cars reduce fuel use 20-35% which is good. And reduce C02 emissions by 60%.

I guess it will be a long time before all cars are electric. (but this is where we will end up in the long term future).

matthewfelgate··on McDonald's is ending its drive-thru AI test
Yes. Well that's up to you.
matthewfelgate··on Amazon-powered AI cameras used to detect emotions of unwitting train passengers
I wonder how much AI the train companies would have to install to work out that bad train service makes passengers unhappy.

Maybe A/B test having the trains run on time.

matthewfelgate··on McDonald's is ending its drive-thru AI test
Is America living in the past?

Here in the UK I always use the McDonalds app and either order for pickup or delivery to my car or table inside the restaurant.

matthewfelgate··on Marion Stokes, the Woman Who Spent over 30 Years Recording Every Minute of US TV
I came here to say this.
matthewfelgate··on Teachers: AI is making children dumb as fuck
Is there a way to orient assignments that can't be solved easily by ai?

Maybe classes will have to have more non-computer exams to test pupils ability to do tasks like solve mathematic questions without ai.

matthewfelgate··on Canada imposes 5% tax on streaming to fund local news, diverse content
This is nasty vindictive stuff from government. Taxing successful companies to fund their pet projects that the state thinks we should watch.
matthewfelgate··on X all-hands leaves staff with few answers on delayed promotions
Elon fired half the staff and Twitter is still running.

Tells you just how much wasted staff there is at most big companies.

matthewfelgate··on Raspberry Pi is now a public company
