mattew··on Startups: Don’t Hire Frontend or Backend Webdevs
So many developers underestimate the need for good, quality visual design and aesthetics in their work. In my experience most non programmers evaluate something first on how it looks, and if it doesn't look good, they won't be interested in how well it actually works. Most programmers on the other hand seem first to be interested in how well it works, without taking into account the look and feel.
mattew··on Lisphp is a Lisp dialect written in PHP.
I think PHP suffers from some of the same issues that VB6 suffered from in terms of inexperienced programmers. With VB6, someone who was not as much of a programmer as we all are could write themselves into a massive mess. I have found when writing PHP code if you are careful, you can build things with decent design patterns and consistency. Sure, its not as clean as a lot of languages, but it sure is easier for me to figure out what is going on with PHP code someone else wrote compared to Perl or Ruby code.
mattew··on inDinero (YC S10) launches Mint.com for Businesses
I am not a lawyer, but you should consider incorporation and separating out your personal affairs from your business affairs. Not only is it easier to see what is going on, it can provide you with the other benefits of incorporation.
mattew··on Ask HN: Anyone ever scan the barcode on an airline boarding pass?
Thanks for the tip.
mattew··on Ask HN: Anyone ever scan the barcode on an airline boarding pass?
Yeah, I decoded the two final words and came to the same conclusion as you. I will check out my next few boarding passes and see if any patterns emerge.
mattew··on Ask HN: What are your favourite geospatial algorithms?
What are you currently using for storing/accessing your spatial data?
mattew··on Being Present: You have ten to twelve years to connect with your kids
Congratulations. Although the items here on HN tend to end up on the work side, of the work/life balance equation, its nice to see an article like this and a comment like yours to help remind me and everyone here that there is a great deal of importance and focus required on the life side of things.
mattew··on Don't be ashamed to ask for business
Prior to reading this post, I did not know about your book, but found it interesting and bought it because of this post.
mattew··on Skype Screen Sharing Is A Huge (And Free) Productivity Tool
No remote control (yet). Remote control + group would almost eliminate the need for GotoMeeting or WebEx for me.
mattew··on Skype Screen Sharing Is A Huge (And Free) Productivity Tool
I am looking forward to the time when Skype has cross-platform group video and screen sharing. I don't use gotomeeting nearly as much for one-on-one screen sharing, but need to bring it out for mutli-party screen share.
mattew··on "Amazon EBS sucks. I just lost all my data"
One of my clients has 2 windows instances. I will need to look at the windows tools to see if there is something equivalent there.
mattew··on "Amazon EBS sucks. I just lost all my data"
Is there any way to set EBS to auto-snapshot on a specified time period through the existing control panel interface? Are snapshots possible through the API?
mattew··on Ask HN: How to be a responsible single founder?
Pingdom is great. We use if to monitor all our client sites and it is awesome.
mattew··on HN on Linkedin
I suggest you try and find people who would either be prospective partners or clients of your project, write a brief message to them, and ask them to review your work and comment.

Also, answering questions relevant to your interest area on LinkedIn is a good way to make contact with people who have problems they are trying to solve.

mattew··on Ask HN: What is the best qualtiy office chair for long stretches of coding?
We spend a lot of time sitting. I want myself and the people who work for me to be comfortable. $800 isn't much to spend on something you use all day, every day.
mattew··on Amazon introduces new service: Simple Notification Service
The email to SMS gateways are much slower in my experience than sending an actual SMS message through a quality service like OpenMarket.
mattew··on Profits = Freedom
I love this snippet from the comments, referring to the fact that 37signals is beholden to their customers.

"Everyone has a boss. There is no escape."

mattew··on Ask HN: How to sell?
I agree with the parent comment 100%. You can always learn how to sell later when the stakes are not so high. For now, you need someone who knows what they are doing and will land your more business at a higher margin.
mattew··on Ask HN: what sites should use ssl?
we mostly use GoDaddy because it is so cheap, but its a horrible user experience. We use DynDns.com for our DNS hosting and I think they offer certs now, so we may switch to them.
mattew··on Ask HN: What payment gateways do you use for your app?
Is there anything like Authorize.net CIM in Canada? The CIM piece is awesome because you don't store any credit card information on your server, which takes all the PCI hassle out of the equation.
mattew··on Ask HN: what sites should use ssl?
We try and make sure all our clients use SSL for authentication and transfer of secure data. Just because Facebook and Google aren't as conscientious as they should be doesn't let you off the hook.

You don't need to pay a few hundred dollars for an SSL certificate, unless you need a wildcard. Go with a cheap reputable Certificate Authority and start this out right.

mattew··on Ask HN: Where did you go to college?
University of Wisconsin, Eau Claire
mattew··on Just Ask HN (or more precisely, url-less) posts
This is a really nice addition to HN. Hopefully this will enable more peer-to-peer engagement around issues that are of interest to the HN community. I know I will be checking this page out on a regular basis to see what I might be able to add to the discussion, and what I might learn from the rest of the HN community.
mattew··on Ask HN: ad server recommendation?
I have two clients using OpenX, and they are both quite pleased. One started out with the free, hosted version, and recently migrated to our own install of OpenX due to poor performance on the hosted version. Our local install performs quite well, though.

OpenX is pretty easy to install and keep running, it does the job, and its straightforward to configure. Don't let the poor performance of the hosted version scare you away.

mattew··on Pork's Dirty Secret (2006)
Everyone should vote with their wallets. I make a concerted effort to purchase pork that has been raised in a sustainable and compassionate manner. I eat at restaurants like Chipotle who care about the farmers that they do business with. Where and what you buy is the way to change things.
mattew··on Caffeine Pills vs Coffee
Keep in mind that a cup of drip coffee and a shot of espresso have wildly divergent amounts of caffeine in them. I read a National Geographic article on coffee that put a shot of espresso at 40mg vs a cup of drip coffee at 160mg.
mattew··on Random thoughts on being an entrepreneur
Most of this makes sense to me with the exception of #13

"13. If you’re happy in your career before the age of thirty, you’re probably doing something wrong. Heck, if you’re happy in your career before the age of seventy, you’re probably doing something wrong."

Can someone shed some light on why I am doing something wrong if I am happy with my career?

mattew··on Ex-Googlers have invested in 200 startups since '05 & are just getting started
I suspect that a great many of these individuals share the following traits:

- extreme intelligence

- experience riding an extremely succesful company to the top

- conifdence from that ride

Many of these folks were in the right place at the right time however, and do not neccesarily have the experience as investors and business advisors.

Should be interesting though. It doesn't matter how they got the money, they are putting it to work, and the relative efficiencies that startups have today vs 5 or 10 years ago will make these investments even more effective.

mattew··on Java: The Good Parts
I have to admit that it took me a little while to figure out exactly how cool the JVM is, and how much of a standalone product it is. Its exciting to see so many languages targeting the JVM and taking advantage of the many years of development and optimization that have gone into the JVM.
