mathgorges··on Lately I've been using timers daily
If you’re interested in doing this, but find it hard to sit it the feelings, consider trying Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), which involves investigating the root of your feelings within your mind.

It’s best to do DBT with a professional, but there’s a large community of DIY DBT practitioners out there. [1]

If your unable to investigate the source of some feelings (e.g. because your brain shuts down when you interrogate them) there is a new-ish practice for detangling your thoughts without all the interpersonal unpleasantness of Talk Therapy (that doesn’t mean it won’t be unpleasant in it’s own way).

It’s called Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). Again, working with a professional is best, but it’s possible to be successful with a DIY approach. [2]

Disclaimer: I’m not a professional in any form of health, mental or otherwise. I’m just a happy self-administered DBT & EMDR patient :)

Can you walk me through what a typical search day is like for you?

To me, the 700 soft limit seems absurd so I'm curious to hear how you interact with the product.

I average 50-100 searches per work day and 10-20 searcher per off day (totalling 1-2.5k per month). But I don't feel I'm using search in a particularly strange way.

For example, if I need to know how the new WidgetBean in SpringBoot works I'll usually end up making ~10 queries related to it before I move on to a new area of research.

E.g., I'll search "SpringBoot WidgetBean release notes" then "SpringBoot WidgetBean examples" or "WidgetBean test double", "WidgetBean in MockMvc test", "WidgetBean PowerMock known issues in MockMvc test", "WidgetBean FooService interation in MockMvc test SpringBoot 3".

Essentially, when I'm searching I go wide to survey the information landscape, then refine my search term as I discover what I actually need to know

This quickly balloons as I'm expected to know many things at $dayjob :)

What does it look like when you search?

This. Kagi is a great product and has been my daily driver for nearly a year. I honestly believe it's the best search engine on the market

But I fear they're going to have to get their prices (and relatedly, cost per search) down considerably before I can recommend them to anyone again.

I was fortunate enough to be grandfathered into an unlimited plan until March, but I don't think I know any professionals, e.g. people using a search engine to get work done, which search less than 24 times per day.

mathgorges··on At Apple, Rare Dissent over a New Product: Interactive Goggles
What annoys me is that there are dozens of industrial applications for this technology, but it often feels as though AR is held hostage by a “need” for mass-market appeal.
mathgorges··on Update to Kagi Search Pricing
You can still be grandfathered into unlimited, for the next year anyway.

I just updated my monthly subscription to annual for just that purpose.

mathgorges··on Update to Kagi Search Pricing
I'm switching my monthly plan to annual today.

My read of the announcment is that this will grandfather me into unlimited search for the year, while excluding me from any of the new AI enhancments.

I hope this clearly conveys my opinion on this change to whomever is bean counting :)

I don’t think I understand the argument that you’re making.

Are you saying that anyone that pays for anything is a venture capitalist?

That doesn’t seem like a very useful definition, so I think I’ve misunderstood you ’:-)

As a native Detroiter I can confidently tell you that any house you can get for $25,000 will come with externalities that will make the house undesirable on balance.

Large back tax bill, lack of city services (e.g. if live in Springwells, good luck getting a reasonable response time from Detroit PD if you're being burgled) and an unsafe transit situation are the most common ones I can think of.

The houses are cheap for a reason. Its not as though Detroit is filled with provincial oafs that don't know what they're selling.

However, solving a business problem with only pure functions is indeed hard

I work in a role where help I ramp a lot of recent graduates into industry.

I can say this comment doesn't comport with my experience. The kids are alright.

One old practice that has helped a lot is pair programming. I employ strong-style pairing when I work with a new hire which helps them ramp up on our practices quickly IME.

A new practice which has helped immensely are in-person "burst weeks" every 3 months or so. It isn't the same as spontainiously grabbing drinks after work, but it definitely helps to build team camaraderie.

mathgorges··on Manatee county teachers close class libraries, fearing prosecution under FL law
I don't see that expressed in the article.

From the article:

> If you have a lot of books like I do, probably several hundred, it is not practical to run all of them through (the vetting process) so we have to cover them up

I imagine teachers in Florida are expected to uphold their normal duties while complying with this new law, and teachers are famously overworked.

Manually checking hundreds of book against an allow-list seems rather time intensive. Since failure to comply with the law could result in a felony charge this course of action from the teachers seems perfectly rational to me.

ETA: Even if a court would throw out the charge (remains to be seen), would you really want to go though all the legal trouble?

mathgorges··on IBM creates 24-core Power chip so customers can exploit Oracle database license
I believe the comment you’re responding to was saying that the dig at Oracle[1] was savage, not IBM’s lack of response.

mathgorges··on Overview of the 555-XXXX phone number
Iirc the article mentioned that 555 numbers used to be reserved for internal use, so my hypothesis is that implementing external 555 numbers likely required some sort of retrofit.

But I don’t have any domain knowledge here, so this is really just a guess

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

mathgorges··on Overview of the 555-XXXX phone number
Very fun article, thanks for sharing :)

I think the current title ‘You could own a 555-XXXX phone number but Verizon’s charged you $2,500 to use it’ doesn’t capture how bad the deal was —- here’s the relevant quote from the article

> Verizon was notorious for charging high fees to establish service to 555 numbers, charging $2,500 for each area code that you wanted your 555 number to be routed in.

mathgorges··on The Marquee Element
I don’t think web rings have been killed, I think they’ve just been eaten by platforms like most of the internet.

In most contexts they’ve been replaced by AI driven recommendation engines.

Although I discovered a delightful example of a human curated recommendation engine the other day in the form of bandcamp’s `Recomendations` feature :)

mathgorges··on Show HN: I'm building an open-source Amazon
I drive for Amazon flex and they’re beginning to trial orders similar to what you describe.

I don’t have a clue what the interface for ordering is like, but I know there’s a new offer type where I’m expected to pick up orders from one-or-several brick and mortar stores in a single shopping plaza before delivering

mathgorges··on Finnish as a world language?
My understanding is that katakana I used for tons of other uses like providing emphasis.

The reason borrowed words are written in katakana is too provide a clue that the word may have a non-standard pronunciation.

It functions similarly to how italicization does in English

mathgorges··on New on Reddit: Comment search, improved search results relevance, search design
I'm not who you're replying to, but this has been my experience in some communities I enjoy while I've had the opposite experience in others.

For example, I used to love /r/conspiracy which is now rather overrun with a particular kind of conspiracy theorist and I no longer feel welcome.

Speaking from the gut I'd say more communities have slid to the left than the right, but nearly all of my communities have been more politicized and it reduces the amount I use the service considerably.

mathgorges··on Why I Prefer Makefiles over Package.json Scripts
I’ve successfully used both together before :)

The makefile lets me be very expressive about task dependencies and encode some developer conveniences. Ie make can know `make bootstrap` should invoke bootstap_windows.sh on Windows and bootstrap_osx.sh on Mac. Then the work happens inside the appropriate script.

They’re two tools that solve different problems but they work together quite well.

mathgorges··on Why “process substitution” is a late feature in Unix shells
> What if programs could have any number of input and output file descriptors and the numbers/names along with their contents and data types were documented in the manual?

What you’re describing is similar to one of the more common ways that programs are run on mainframes by using Job Control Language (JCL).
