marvvelous··on For book lover, do you like my idea on selectist.com?
GoodReads has lists pretty locked up for me. Discovery isn't perfect but Selectist seems to be more of what we already have. I'd love to see some innovation here though. Maybe some exhaustive normalized tagging and filtering (AND, OR, NOT).
marvvelous··on Ask HN: What's the worst you've ever screwed up at work?
I did something similar once. Now my query writing goes:

> UPDATE

> UPDATE SET url='new_url' WHERE source_id IN (etc)

> UPDATE sources SET url='new_url' WHERE source_id IN (etc)

marvvelous··on Google Bus blocked, window smashed in West Oakland
Better article describing 2 more bus incidents from this morning - http://blogs.kqed.org/newsfix/2013/12/20/eviction-protesters...

You can filter/sort by price too on yelp but I know what you mean. A lot of it is the format of their results and how impossibly slow the maps are.

Might be solvable with a "find similar" function that lets you put in a bar you like and finds similar listings close to your location.

I really enjoyed reading this. It's clever and well done and honestly makes me like the rap genius guys more for responding in kind.

As for why op is publicly posting a private email thread, it wouldn't be surprising for both sides to agree to post this content. Despite the slightly brutal reply at the end, rap genius doesn't come off looking bad at all.

marvvelous··on Ask HN: Would you pay for this service?
I can't answer without seeing what we'd be paying for. That said, in general, a quality analysis would be worth $40/month to me.

If you add your email to your public profile I'd like to reach out privately.

marvvelous··on Ask HN: Would you pay for this service?
Those questions would be answered by a landing page that shows you what you'd be paying for. There's much better tools for data extraction and automation available today than in the recent past and this market sounds like a great category for disruption.

Startups often neglect competitor analysis because it's not available cheaply. If you could get 85% of the value automatically that's worth paying for.

marvvelous··on The Downside of Thanking Security Contributors
> Not only are they reporting trivial issues, but they also aren’t testing our site in a respectful fashion, by doing stuff like signing up to real events with fake profiles.

2nd to last paragraph mentioned this which seems like the real issue behind this whole article. Receiving a couple of security emails a day isn't a problem but the fake activity sounds like it's bad for regular users.

No idea how to stop something like this though, maybe put up a page for bounty hunters with some clear guidelines on how they're expected to act?

marvvelous··on Interactive Résumé of Robby Leonardi
For resumes I'd define best as "highest converting". If this is the best it'd be great to see some data.
marvvelous··on Show HN: An elegant profile for a more civilized age
I agree with all of this feedback but I think it's the cursive font (Tangerine) that needs to change.
marvvelous··on Software Engineer Salaries
The numbers are as industry dependent as they are location dependent. For NYC ad agencies you'll get 60-80k as a jr dev and be able to jump into a proper dev role at 75k-100k after 6-12months.
marvvelous··on The Right Way to Grant Equity to Your Employees
Just because the equity is likely worthless doesn't mean I want to be a cog in the machine.

I agree, I work for a salary and generally discount equity but the lack of monetary incentive doesn't mean I'm not in the game. I've always offered my opinion on business strategy and the best way to accomplish goals and I hope other early employees do the same.

marvvelous··on They said this hack was impossible
It's still cool for android and windows mobile though. It implies that the transfer speed is much faster than the existing options on those platforms.
marvvelous··on Plotly: The Web's first scientific graphing app
I saw a demo in person the other day and they showed it as a graph embedded in a Washington Post article. I was most impressed by the ability to click through on the graph and browse or query the data set directly.
