marvinkennis··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (October 2025)
Rectangle | On-site Chicago, or US remote in SF and NY | Full-Time | Salary + Equity

We're looking to hire a dedicated full-stack engineer at Rectangle.

If you are (or know!) someone who has thought deeply about distributed coordination, have strong opinions on conflict resolution, or get excited about building systems that are resilient to crazy amounts of chaos, I'd love to talk to you!

Over the last few months we’ve been investing heavily in building our internal infrastructure to power automation, integration, and visibility across the supply chain. We’re rapidly onboarding new customers and are looking for an engineer who’s excited to build alongside them.

You’ll be working directly with customers, solving real-world problems, and scaling the solutions you build. The products you own end-to-end will coordinate billions of dollars of freight, and unlock real revenue and efficiency for leading tech-enabled logistics companies.

This is a great opportunity for someone who loves to operate 0 → 1 while also being directly involved in shaping our platform strategy as we keep stacking investments we’ve made into our infra layer.

Stack: Typescript, Go, Kafka, SQL, AWS

Looks like an amazing product. Been playing around with it for a few mins. The UI is quite buggy and jumps around a lot (Chrome, MacOS), and seems to auto-refresh on the organizations page, which makes curating lists impossible. What's a good way to keep providing feedback?

If you are (or know!) someone who has thought deeply about distributed coordination, have strong opinions on conflict resolution, or get excited about building systems that are resilient to crazy amounts of chaos, I'd love to talk to you!

Over the past ~6 months my co-founder and I have been hard at work building our product, soon helping coordinate billions of dollars worth of shipments. Our customers love what we've been building for them, we've got revenue, and are backed by leading VCs in the industry.

If you're interested in solving some of the most challenging problems at the intersection of technology and logistics, don't hesitate to reach out.

marvinkennis··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (July 2024)
Rectangle | Software engineer | Full-time | Chicago USA | Onsite | https://rectanglehq.com

The global supply chain has a collaboration problem. It's a mess of TMSs, ERPs, WhatsApp, emails, and spreadsheets. For the last 50 years, it's been solved with brittle EDI integrations to bridge walled gardens. We're taking a different approach. We aim to reshape how the supply chain collaborates and as a result redefine how trillions of dollars of goods get moved around the world.

We’re a small product team who have worked on anything from foundational technology at Flexport, self-driving cars, to core AI experiences and products at Google. We’re looking to bring a high level of craft to an industry that runs on incredibly outdated software.

marvinkennis··on It's all unraveling at OpenAI (again)
I mean obviously predicting tokens in the context of LLM output requires planning. But planning tokens doesn’t generalize. This is evident when you train an LLM on a small data set and ask it about any unseen variation of it.

There are many examples of slightly modified popular riddles that are easy to solve by reasoning about them, but LLMs always fall back to the most likely output from their training data.

marvinkennis··on It's all unraveling at OpenAI (again)
This is one of those things I’d love to be wrong on. I think your point on combining them with other models is interesting.

Do you think that Markov chains can reason and plan? Dijkstra’s algorithm? Curious where you draw the line

marvinkennis··on It's all unraveling at OpenAI (again)
A lot of the hype around LLMs and the unfounded promises of them solving complex tasks autonomously seem to stem from a lack of understanding on how these models actually work.

The tech is impressive and has its uses, but we shouldn’t pretend like a token predictor can somehow reason and plan.

marvinkennis··on Sam Altman goes before US Congress to propose licenses for building AI
I kind of think of LLMs as fish in an aquarium. It can go on any path in that aquarium, even places it hasn't been before, but ultimately it's staying in the glass box we put it in.
marvinkennis··on EU urged to protect grassroots AI research or risk losing out to US
For what it's worth, there's a huge barrier to get to SV in the form of US immigration policies. Your anecdote is no doubt valid, but if those immigration policies were loosened up, I'd bet we'd see an even larger migration to SV.

marvinkennis··on DeepFloyd IF: open-source text-to-image model
Seeing a lot of text-to-image out there recently. Does anyone know what the current state of the art is on image-to-text? Thinking something similar to Midjourney's /describe command that they added in v5
marvinkennis··on Heroku has been running a second copy of my scheduler instance
Heroku has been an absolute dumpster fire. Every time their name comes up I can't help but mention that they deleted my account for inactivity, but have still been charging my credit card. No easy way to cancel because... they deleted my account.

marvinkennis··on Tell HN: Heroku deleted my database with no warning
Heroku sent me repeated messages that they would shut down my account due to inactivity. I was fine with that because finding and turning off the supposedly active Dyno was impossible. Guess what? Still charging me $27 a month for a server I can't even manage.
marvinkennis··on Ask HN: What real world problem does cryptocurrency solve?
I've been very skeptical, but recently come around on my position. There are a lot of abstract ideas on why crypto is a good thing (permissionless, decentralized, censorship resistant, anonymity etc etc), but I personally wouldn't bet against it for the sole reason that it massively increases developer and innovation velocity. It is financial infrastructure where innovation can happen at a fast and almost uninhibited pace. It's the path of least resistance for engineers that want to build financial products. Moving "value" at the *core* layer of infrastructure has never been this easy.

Whether you like it or not, financial infrastructure powers our world (chicken nuggets wouldn't be possible without hedge funds, all large corporations eventually pivot into financial services etc), so having a network where innovation of this infrastructure and the products built on top can happen at a faster pace is incredibly compelling. It's a matter of time before most of the new and compelling products and services show up in crypto before TradFi (because easier they're easier to build there), which will in turn onboard more users into the ecosystem.

marvinkennis··on NFT projects are just MLMs for tech elites
Yes, if you trade it on a marketplace such as OpenSea. You could argue that the benefits and upside of wash trading outweigh the cost (about $10 per tx).
marvinkennis··on Ask HN: Where can I live off 1k USD per month?
Maybe I'm missing something here, and I just read the Wikipedia article you linked. If the landlord takes the cash and buys the property, then the cash is gone and there is no cash to get interest on. Does the landlord just pocket the property appreciation?
marvinkennis··on Launch HN: Revery.AI (YC S21) Scalable deep learning-based virtual dressing room

marvinkennis··on Launch HN: Revery.AI (YC S21) Scalable deep learning-based virtual dressing room
Apologies for the late reply. I downloaded Style Space yesterday after you mentioned here, and the main problem really just was not being able to import my own photos.

A consumer play might be super interesting here; let users import their own photos, make their own outfits, share it with their friends, and add referral/affiliate links on the way to checkout. I work on consumer tech, so email's in my profile if you want to chat more.

Curation is becoming a big part of the next wave of online influence and you have a very unique opportunity to capitalize on that.

marvinkennis··on Bitcoin surpasses $50K as major companies jump into crypto
I'm holding a tiny amount of BTC, but this has been my reason not to invest more. I know that at most I might be comfortable investing $20K in Bitcoin now, but that's literally it. If that amount increased 100x, it'd be $2mm. A good amount of money but by no means life changing to the extent that I will forever regret it.
marvinkennis··on Ask HN: What are you surprised isn’t being worked on more?
Blendle.com is a notable competitor here. Initially started out with a pay-per-article model, but now moved to a Spotify model as you mention.
marvinkennis··on Six Months of Tiny Projects
This makes a lot of sense, and I've recently experienced the same thing. You start out with a blank canvas, everything's easy, you can code what you want and you move fast. As your product evolves, so does its complexity. Suddenly you're no longer just 'quickly going add this', because the constraints of what you already built hold you back. This is especially true for supposedly small projects without a lot of planning.
