martingoodson··on Airbnb removed my negative review
I hate the fact that hosts are allowed to cancel at the last minute, completely spoiling your holiday. You can't leave a review to warn other users.

It's open to abuse. We've been screwed over by hosts who cancel at the last minute (eg they couldn't find anywhere else to stay). There's literally nothing you can do.

martingoodson··on What can I buy instead of an RPi for my nephew to learn to program on?
I looked randomly into one of these 'alternatives', the Atomic Pi. It seems to be completely useless for my purposes (https://hackaday.com/2019/06/06/the-atomic-pi-is-it-worth-it...).

I'm starting to think waiting until Q2 is a good idea.

martingoodson··on What can I buy instead of an RPi for my nephew to learn to program on?
Thanks. Do you (or anyone else) have experience with these?

Do you think an eleven year old be able to get up and running with a Rock Pi 4 Plus Model C, for example?

Thanks!

martingoodson··on What happens when babies are left to cry it out?
This is dangerous and wrong. The incidence of SIDS has been reduced greatly by stopping putting newborns to sleep on their stomachs.
martingoodson··on A software change allowed FTX to use client money
Stay civil.

This is not an argument against programmers, like other professionals, learning the aspects of the law which are relevant to their job. Why should programming be the one profession where this is not required?

martingoodson··on A software change allowed FTX to use client money
If there are clear boundaries, there would be no need for interpretation. Interpretation is needed to resolve questions that arise because the boundaries are not clear.
martingoodson··on A software change allowed FTX to use client money
‘clear boundaries that can be evaluated and prosecuted when violated.’

Have you ever looked at media law or libel law? It does not have clear boundaries, but journalists are still expected to follow the law. Journalists are not absolved of the responsibility because it’s complicated.

You just need to not break the law. It’s how it works. If you don’t want exposure to liability, you need to acquaint yourself with relevant law.

martingoodson··on A software change allowed FTX to use client money
Yes of course they need to know the law. Anyone who might potentially break the law during the course of their work needs to know what that law is. ‘Just following orders’ is not a defence.

This is very odd special pleading by programmers. Every industry needs to do this: journalists learn media law in their university degrees, architects have to learn the building regulations. Why is programming any different?

martingoodson··on The value of owning more books than you can read (2018)
I’ve accidentally bought several books only to find that I already have them sitting on my bookshelf, unread. I think I need to stop buying books.
martingoodson··on Cast iron leet
But how do I maintain the seasoning over Time?
martingoodson··on Cast iron leet
If my seasoning is getting a bit thin I just smear on some oil in a thin layer and heat at high temperature for about 3 minutes and that’s it. I never have any rust spots because I always dry it after use.

I don’t find it very high maintenance at all.

martingoodson··on Cast iron leet
I think you’re doing it wrong. It’s very easy to renew the seasoning and it doesn’t retain smells.
martingoodson··on Cast iron leet
Carbon steel woks are useless for induction or electric jobs. The sides are so high that they don’t get near to the heat and never season. Then they rust.

I which I could find an alternative to non-stick woks. I’ve ordered a steel aluminium laminate. Maybe that will work.

martingoodson··on Study finds link between 'forever chemicals' in cookware and liver cancer
Anyone know how I can replace a non-stick wok? Carbon steel doesn’t work unless you have gas. Induction and electric hobs don’t heat up the sides enough to maintain the seasoning of a wok, which has very high sides.

I would rather not use non-stick coatings but I can’t find a good alternative.

martingoodson··on Study finds link between 'forever chemicals' in cookware and liver cancer
I use a stainless steel pan for sauces. Sauces start with a base of onions, garlic etc which is not prone to sticking on stainless steel.

If I need to fry some fish or steak, I use my cast iron frying pan.

martingoodson··on Evidence for behavioural interventions looks increasingly shaky
This is a poor headline (from The Economist) that does not reflect the referenced work. The correct interpretation is that nudges need to be tested in the field to find out if they work. This is common knowledge in behavioural science.

Experts are not good at predicting which nudges are going to work in practice[1]. Trials are always needed.

This is no different to the requirement for drug trials. Drugs are not released just on the say so of pharmacologists, empirical evidence is needed. And yet nobody says pharmacology is looking ‘shaky’.

“So Vic, we have an urgent issue, one that I need addressed right away. I’ve already assigned someone from my team to help you, and I hope you can fix this tomorrow” said Steve.

“I’ve been looking at the Google logo on the iPhone and I’m not happy with the icon. The second O in Google doesn’t have the right yellow gradient. It’s just wrong and I’m going to have Greg fix it tomorrow. Is that okay with you?” Of course this was okay with me.

martingoodson··on YOLOv6: Redefine state-of-the-art for object detection
Just to clear things up: Joseph Redmon (who made the first YOLO) has anointed Alexey Bochkovskiy as the keeper of the flame [1]. Alexey is a very careful researcher and does a ton of performance evaluation on his models. His results are to be trusted.

He gave a great talk at the London Machine Learning Meetup in April, if you’re interested [2]. (Full disclosure: I run the meetup)

martingoodson··on USDA ignoring the science on low-carb diets
The BMJ has had to issue several corrections about this author’s work. For example:

This Feature (BMJ 2015;351:h4962, doi:10.1136/bmj.h4962) by Nina Teicholz stated that when the guidelines advisory committee started its work in 2012 there had been several prominent papers, including a meta-analysis and two major reviews (one systematic), that failed to confirm an association between saturated fats and heart disease. This statement did not aptly reflect the findings of the more authoritative of these reviews, by Hooper et al (Cochrane Database Syst Rev 2012;5:CD002137), which found that saturated fats had an effect on cardiovascular events but failed to confirm an effect on cardiovascular mortality.

martingoodson··on Low economic growth is a slow-burning crisis for Britain
This is highly misleading. The 45% rate only applies to the portion of salary over £150k. Someone earning £200k will pay 75k in income tax. That’s 37.5% overall.

martingoodson··on Ask HN: Have you ever switched cloud?
I once worked with a CTO who decided to move from AWS to GCP (and also move from Spark to Hive and python to scala, at the same time). That guy was an idiot.

(At one point somebody accidentally spent £30,000 in data transfer costs with one key press.)

The project was never completed and the CTO just moved on to another fancy CTO position.
