martindevans··on Matrix v1.15
In my experience with running Discord servers you setup a couple of hierarchical roles (admin, moderator, user etc) when you first setup the server and never again.

However I'm constantly adding new roles which are really just groups of users. I would say 90% of all the Discord roles I've ever created have no permissions associated with them at all and just exist to ping a group of users (or act as a tag for bots).

Maybe that's served by a different feature in Matrix for user groups. If so, that's still not quite as useful, because sometimes later on you decide the group needs a permission (e.g. a casual gaming group has grown enough to justify having it's own channel).

martindevans··on Lies we tell ourselves to keep using Golang (2022)
C# can compile standalone binaries for multiple platforms.
martindevans··on Net 9.0 LINQ Performance Improvements
From your description it sounds like in-memory application state is lost with Hot Reload, but I don't think that's true? I admit might be wrong about this, it doesn't apply to Unity which is my main development environment.

Quoting from the docs (emphasis mine): > .NET Hot Reload applies code changes, including changes to stylesheets, to a running app without restarting the app and *without losing app state*

That sounds more like how you described edit-and-continue to me.

martindevans··on Net 9.0 LINQ Performance Improvements
> Edit-and-continue comes to mind, which despite how many times people confuse the two is not hot reload

I'm certainly guilty of this! What's the difference?

martindevans··on Update on Llama adoption
No, they spent billions on a model and released the weights, and that's fantastic! It's not not open source though.
martindevans··on Is .NET just miles ahead or am I delusional?
There was a "green thread" experiment for dotnet a while ago, here is the conclusion: https://github.com/dotnet/runtimelab/issues/2398
martindevans··on Satoshi – Sirius emails 2009-2011
Isn't there effectively a multi-billion dollar bounty on finding out who Satoshi is and deploying a bit of "Rubber-hose cryptanalysis"?
martindevans··on SpaceX Loses Starship Spaceraft During Test Flight
Early in the development of the Saturn-V they had issues with thrust instability in the F1 engine (in the worst cases causing it to explode). They had trouble diagnosing the issue (and blew up some engines) before they came up with the idea of setting off a small bomb inside the engine to trigger instability on demand (destroying some more engines).

Do you consider that a failure of the Saturn-V program? Or do you understand the value of testing prototype hardware to destruction?

martindevans··on Starship Integrated Flight Test 2 at 7 Am Central Time
Less time spent not firing engines, no need for separation hardware (e.g. hydraulic pushers), no need for ullage thrusters (settling fuel before lighting stage 2).
martindevans··on .NET 8
There used to be .NET Framework (which was a Windows only runtime built by Microsoft) and Mono (an open source implementation for various other platforms).

In 2016 they started building .NET Core which is new open source implementation (built mostly by Microsoft) which runs on more platforms. For a while all three existed side by side.

Eventually .NET Core caught up and overtook the other implementations. These days Framework is legacy. Core has been renamed to just .NET (since it's now _the_ runtime) and Mono (as far as I know) has been totally replaced by it.

This is all from memory, so apologies for any inaccuracies!

martindevans··on OpenAI Preparedness Challenge
It's a good job that this planet doesn't have 8 billion unaligned intelligences on it. Someone might prompt them to be malicious!
martindevans··on Java 21 makes me like Java again
That's basically what c# has done. But it's implemented as a warning which can be upgraded to an error. I think it might even be an error by default in new projects now.
martindevans··on Unity's Self-Combustion Engine
That's completely useless for code assets. Even for purely art assets they usually come with Unity specific things such as prefabs, particle effects etc.
martindevans··on Unity's Self-Combustion Engine
The original plan would have had the developer paying 20 cents every time someone loaded up their website. That's more than "some payment".
martindevans··on WASIX, the Superset of WASI Supporting Threads, Processes and Sockets
I'm also currently implementing a subset of WASI, would you mind sharing a link to that file?
martindevans··on Scotland starts renewed case for independence
United Earth sounds nice, but the United Citizen Federation is a bit less nice.
martindevans··on Scotland starts renewed case for independence
Perhaps I did misunderstand, I was certainly interpreting it as a desire for concrete change in the political structures of how the world is run rather than a shift in attitudes amongst the people of the world. I'm definitely not opposed to less conflict in the world!

Personally I don't really agree with your assessment of the EU as a form of that though. In this context I would include something like the EU when talking about larger governments (maybe that's not strictly correct, but it is what I had in mind with my original comment). There are of course lower levels in the EU (i.e. the individual countries) but that's also true for many countries with a central government and smaller regional authorities (e.g. London & Edinburgh).

martindevans··on Scotland starts renewed case for independence
One huge government ruling the entire world sounds out-of-this-world-super dystopian to me!
martindevans··on Tool to convert copyrighted music into fair use
Not at all, you'd still be violating all the non-gpl licenses. Just because GPL is more restrictive doesn't mean it somehow supercedes all other licenses!
martindevans··on I Spent $6M on Google Ads Last Year
The original comments was about detecting if a given IP is a bot or not - I assume they probably can't do that given 32 random bits!
martindevans··on I Spent $6M on Google Ads Last Year
How can you anonymise an IP address? Given that (as I understand it) an IP address is considered personally identifying information under GDPR.
martindevans··on SpaceX first stage landing failed for Starlink-4 launch
There hasn't been a single failure of a reused falcon 9 booster on launch, which is the bit relevant to human spaceflight. Humans aren't going to ride a falcon 9 down to landing.

If you're talking about starship then I'm not sure how worthwhile extrapolating from F9 is. I would guess they're pushing F9 to its limits here - after all a small gain in launch efficiency multiplied by the size of the StarLink constellation is a big overall improvement!

martindevans··on Why Discord is switching from Go to Rust
Unity has recently added the "incremental GC" [1] which spreads the work of the GC over multiple frames. As I understand it this has a lower overall throughput, but _much_ better worst case latency.

martindevans··on Alphabet announces fourth quarter and fiscal year 2019 results [pdf]
Firefox on Android with uBlock seems to do the job for me. I just had to disable the YouTube app so that videos play in the browser.
martindevans··on A 96 Bitcoin ransom payment ends up on Bitfinex
What stops fraudulent reports?

e.g. 1. I pay you 1 BTC 2. Wait until I receive whatever I paid for 2. Now I tell you to send me 0.5BTC or else I'll report the entire 1BTC as ransom payment.

The blacklist is just a new and very powerful tool for additional fraud!

martindevans··on Crew Dragon launch escape demonstration
I _think_ what you're getting at is that the flight termination system triggered (controlled explosion) but not when it should have (unplanned)?

As far as I understand it once the capsule ejected the Falcon 9 was destinated to break up (due to aerodynamic forces) and that break up would trigger the FTS automatically. So the AFTS triggering was part of the plan.

That said it also doesn't really matter - the test was about what happens to the capsule when something goes wrong and not what happens to the booster.

martindevans··on C# 8: Switch expressions
String.Format("Is {0} to read {2} {1} of the {3} out of place", "harder", "half", "because", "string is").
martindevans··on GPU LSM: A Dynamic Dictionary Data Structure for the GPU [pdf]
That sounds incredible. Is it publicly available somewhere?
martindevans··on Engineering Habitats for the Moon and Mars
If the 6000+ tonne number quoted above is accurate then a BFR is a very long way from sending one to Mars - I can't remember the precise payload figure but I think it was around 100 tonnes to the surface of Mars.
martindevans··on Did Bitcoin just prove it can't scale?
Ah that's a shame it would have been really interesting to see how that worked in reality.

I wonder if it could be measured the _other_ way around - i.e. are the sustained tiny blocks on BCH _increasing_ decentralisation compared to BTC right now? I can't find any good information on block propagation time though :(
