marliechiller··on Beyond Meat is struggling, and the plant-based meat industry worries
That doesnt solve the problem of slaughtering a sentient being for 5 minutes of taste pleasure which I think he was trying to avoid
marliechiller··on Red meat is not a health risk. New study slams years of shoddy research
not sure what your definition of humane is but mine certainly isnt this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-7hAELEBjX4
marliechiller··on Ask HN: Where do you escape for non-clickbait thoughtful/informational content?
These two legitimately changed my life by exposing me to a myriad of topics I never would have considered interesting in my day to day life. I am a more considerate and content person as a result of these experiences
marliechiller··on Helix: A Neovim inspired editor, written in Rust
does anyone know of any plugin which does the same as the IDEAVim plugin? I'd like to try this kakoune based layout in intellij for the same reasons but this is a bit of a blocker if I have to keep flipping between vim and kakoune bindings.
marliechiller··on Seaweed could be the future of plastic [video]
Beyond environmental damage, plastic is hypothesized to be one of the main drivers behind the drastically decreasing sperm counts in human males. I think we are only just uncovering the tip of the iceberg for the damage that plastic can do with respect to hormone disruption in the human body

Faeces look disgusting as you learned that it was disgusting from your parents when you were young. Its unrelated to your own evolution but is instead a memetic idea passed on from one generation to the next
marliechiller··on Time for Army Corps of Engineers to investigate moving water West?
how much cereal does the average person eat vs the average cow?
marliechiller··on How to Do a Handstand
I dont think 70% overhead press is necessary for a handstand - its a much more balance oriented exercise than strength. Obviously strength is needed too, but 70% OHP will be unachievable for most people. I can handstand but only OHP about 40% of my body weight so I'm sure others can do the same

exact same user story for me!
marliechiller··on Ask HN: What are some good inspirational and uplifting books?
Mans Search For Meaning, by Viktor Frankl really changed my perspective on life. I recommend it wherever I can. Some parts are not so uplifting due to the context, but the overall effect it had on me certainly was

marliechiller··on World’s first octopus farm stirs ethical debate
im sorry, but you cant dismiss the rest of his valid points purely because he got 1 out of many incorrect. I detect a hint of bias might be present on your side from your username also...
marliechiller··on World’s first octopus farm stirs ethical debate
source of that general rule?
marliechiller··on I advised a student to not publish evidence of reverse racism
I respectfully disagree and would go far as to say that this attitude is counter productive to advancing beyond race. Any acceptance of racism should be shunned irrespective of which ethnic group is doing it. A persons characteristics should not dictate whether an action is more or less morally right.

> Why is it wrong to murder conscious things but not unconscious ones?

This is a bit pedantic isnt it? I would hope you can come to a conclusion which isnt borderline psychopathic

Yes, suffering is an unavoidable part of life which most organisms seek to reduce as much as possible. Given we all have existence bias and presumably dont want to end our lives prematurely, why would you knowingly want to increase it for others? I should have taken the hint from your initial response of "why is killing animals bad" that this would have been a pointless discussion. Why is killing anything bad?

marliechiller··on Satellite finds methane leaks from gas pipelines
One could, but with that argument it equates all life as being equal. If that is the case, why is it wrong to murder?

Personally, I can very clearly see that a cow or a dog is concious whereas a plant (if concious at all) is very much further towards unconcious than a human understanding of conciousness. Therefore I opt to reduce the suffering as much as possible.

I would hope if an alien species that was much more concious than we could comprehend were to stumble across earth, they would not cause us suffering and eat us merely because we are not as intelligent as they are.

marliechiller··on Satellite finds methane leaks from gas pipelines
You misunderstand. I'm not forcing anyone. I was replying directly to the original posters comment. Also to your last point, please dont assume that I am assuming.

Whether you choose to acknowledge it or not, dairy and eggs still contribute to mass slaughter and suffering so your point about not killing animals on a your stated diet is a bit misinformed.

marliechiller··on Satellite finds methane leaks from gas pipelines
As a side, note, I'd like to point out that you should go vegan predominantly for the moral ethics of killing something for 5 mins of taste pleasure rather than purely environmental concerns (although valid)
marliechiller··on U.S. surgeons transplant pig heart into human patient
Thats an interesting point but I think I'd have to disagree - purpose is very much constrained to concious design. Those traits were selected not for the purpose of swimming but merely due to the pressure of selection itself. In your example of flippers, the selection pressure is likely on mobility but the purpose of a limb is not mobility in and of itself. Would that make a flipper purposeless if moving over land?
marliechiller··on U.S. surgeons transplant pig heart into human patient
I think this point is very hard to argue against. Natural selection has no intent, mutation is random and its consequences are thus flukes as to whether they work or not to support an organisms survival. Very well explained @_nothing!
marliechiller··on The Sucker Complex

marliechiller··on Why Lo-Fi Music Draws Listeners In
Anjunadeep is a fantastic recommendation. I regularly listen to their playlists both during work and outside of it now. Very versatile
marliechiller··on What's Wrong with Tech Hiring
Dishonest people only miss out on opportunities when theyre identified as being dishonest. That's besides the point though, OP was talking about employing this approach only when the opposition is being dishonest. He may lead a completely honest life in the rest of his pursuits. I think thats a savvy way to live
