markx2··on Good Plugins send C&D to WP.com
Is that dev banned from wordpress.org? If not, why does the dev not just close the plugin? After all, they put everything there in the first place.
markx2··on Secure Custom Fields
On behalf of the WordPress security team, I am announcing that we are invoking point 18 of the plugin directory guidelines and are forking Advanced Custom Fields (ACF) into a new plugin, Secure Custom Fields. SCF has been updated to remove commercial upsells and fix a security problem.

markx2··on Ask HN: What are your go-to sources for culinary info?
For recipes, the BBC is a good resource. https://www.bbc.co.uk/food

For cooking then for me it's cook repeatedly. Like most things, the more you do it the better you get as you learn what works, what does not, what you like, how your oven/hob/pans work (because they all vary).

I must have a dozen or more 'cookery' books but they can't tell me how hot is hot, how my pans conduct heat, how different my oven is to theirs.

Keep cooking and maybe start by perfecting a food you love.

markx2··on Ask HN: Setting up a home office Tips?
Two things that made the most difference for me.

1. Wacom tablet, basic level. I developed RSI (because of mouse clicking) in 2007/8 and using the tablet in Mouse mode helped hugely.

2. Coccyx cushion

markx2··on Automattic–WP Engine Term Sheet
This thread went from #1 to buried.
markx2··on Automattic–WP Engine Term Sheet
The 'audit rights' are written at the end of 2(a) and apply to just giving money. It's not just time.
markx2··on Automattic–WP Engine Term Sheet
It's there in the Fee section.....

I get that regulatory bodies should have access under certain conditions, but letting a competitor do this? Makes zero sense.

markx2··on Automattic–WP Engine Term Sheet
This looks very strange:

"Automattic will have full audit rights."

"WordPress.org and Automattic will have full audit rights, including access to employee records and time-tracking."

markx2··on Automattic–WP Engine Term Sheet
How can the 'Fee' possibly be justified?

"2. Fee. In exchange for the License Grant, WP Engine shall do one of the following:

(a) Pay Automattic a royalty fee equal to 8% of its Gross Revenue on a monthly basis, within fifteen days of the end of each month. "Gross Revenue" means all revenue generated by WP Engine from the sale of its services, calculated without deductions for taxes, refunds, or other costs. WP Engine will also provide Automattic a detailed monthly report of its Gross Revenue within fifteen days of the close of each calendar month, including a product line breakdown of all revenues generated. Automattic will have full audit rights.

(b) Commit 8% of its revenue in the form of salaries of WP Engine employees working on WordPress core features and functionality to be directed by WordPress.org. WP Engine will provide Automattic a detailed monthly report demonstrating its fulfillment of this commitment. WordPress.org and Automattic will have full audit rights, including access to employee records and time-tracking.

(c) Some combination of the above two options'

Love this, reminds me of Trackmania but being able to tackle any course is a huge plus.
markx2··on Reddit 4k wallpaper directory from top subreddits, enjoy
I get that wallpapers can be stunning examples of photography / art. Having used 2 or 3 screens for work I don't see the point - if I can see the wallpaper then I cannot see the work I am doing.

I'm using a macbook air right now and I have no idea at all what the wallpaper is. None. I never see it. Yes I can click to Desktop to see it, but why? I think my Windows wallpaper is a cliff/sea? Maybe not, never see it.

Maybe they are for 4k TV screensavers?

That said, as images they really can be amazing.

The fact that he wants money for Automattic suggests that Automattic are now hurting financially in some way.

markx2··on Ask HN: How does Telegram make money?
Ask an investor? Matt Mullenweg is one.
markx2··on Wordpress.com Is Not WordPress
Going back to the initial cause of this, Matt decries a competitor for not giving back. Yet Matt is doing the very same.

Two years ago, WordPress plugin creators lost access to their stats for downloads from wordpress.org [1]. Despite the pleas and the spurious reasons stats remain hidden. Matt, the CEO of Automattic, can see them though.

Surely Matt would want to give back to the people who made WordPress what it is?

markx2··on Why Does Apple Keep Making Medical Devices?
I had a Series 3 Apple watch, I also had atrial fibrillation. I upgraded to the Series 7 and it's recordings, though dismissed my doctors but supported by their choice of detectors enabled us to determine the probable cause.

I have hearing loss and the hearing aids I bought a few years ago cost me £4,000 / pair. I lost one. My insurance excess is less than a pair of Apple Pro 2 earphones. [1]

I'm not sure what else they could produce in the health sphere that would directly benefit me but so far what they are doing is great.

[1] One caveat: If you see me and realise I am wearing a hearing aid you will probably react in a different way to if you see me wearing Air Pods and assume I'm listening to music (which I think was a point made here a few days ago but which happened to me today at the pub).
