Why not direct the money to the planting of trees?
markkat··on Voyagers Detect an Increase in the Density of Space Outside the Solar System
Reticulating splines...
markkat··on Early Work
A couple of decades ago, I set forth to create something every day. It could be as simple as a bit of prose, writing some code, or as involved as a birdhouse. I haven't succeeded in creating every day since, but I did successfully create a habit of behavior that I cannot break. I've built games, websites, apps, written blogs, filed patents, built siege engines, been published, painted, carved wooden toys, remodeled houses, and much more. I've also started a couple of companies, one of which went through YCS17 and is still growing.

It's sad that there exists any cynicism around creation at all. Our ability to create might be the most human of our qualities. We literally make the world we live in.

The creations that excite me most are those that enable people to create even more. I really appreciate what PG is saying here, what he believes, and the dream factory that is YC.

markkat··on Voyagers Detect an Increase in the Density of Space Outside the Solar System
What if the Voyager probes are slowing down our simulation by constantly expanding the map?
markkat··on Japan on Track to Introduce Flying Taxi Services in 2023
Thanks. That’s awfully loud.
markkat··on Japan on Track to Introduce Flying Taxi Services in 2023
I can't find a video with honest sound. Those blades are not going to be quiet.
markkat··on The joys of owning an ‘OG’ email account
I won a bid on a lawnmower in the UK with my OG gmail.

I get a bit of that stuff.

Occasionally, I also get a bit of skepticism when people ask for my email.

markkat··on The Odyssey – Alexander Pope translation (1725)
I wanted to blog the Odyssey from Eurylochus's perspective in 2006. The next thing I knew, I had blogged the Iliad.

https://underodysseus.blogspot.com/2006_02_12_archive.html

I should get back to the Odyssey.

markkat··on Apparent absence of covid transmission at hair salon with face covering policy
Is it any wonder? This same experiment is being run every day at hospitals and clinics across the country. Face masks diminish the risk dramatically.
markkat··on Gravity Is Not Like the Other Forces
I’ve long thought gravity is more likely to be the product of space between masses, not something that alters it. My thinking is the “alteration” of we perceive as gravity is lopsided entropy due to a field with a gradient of space.

I wrote this thought experiment years ago, which was the start of this way of thinking: http://corpusdord.blogspot.com/2006/02/matter-space-and-time...

markkat··on Bicycles from Sketches (2016)
IMO it's underappreciated how these mistakes are not a bug of human intelligence, but a feature. They reveal a default non-literal interpretation of the world, which can be made less abstract when needed. However, it's the default abstractness that prevents us from making gross contextual errors based upon a literal interpretation.
markkat··on Siri, What Time Is It in London?
Google, DDG, Alexa, and Bing don't "get it", meaning they don't shared a contextual framework that resembles our own. These algorithms mimic a shared contextual framework, but it is mimicry. That is the fundamental reason why they don't know how they are wrong when we decide they are.
markkat··on Siri, What Time Is It in London?
The mistake Gruber is making here is that DDG, Google, Alexa, and Bing did not "get it right". Their answer wasn't wrong, but it's not because they "got it". They never "got it" any more than Siri didn't.

AI is a story we tell ourselves.

markkat··on The spine of San Francisco is now car-free
Oops. I actually drove on Market yesterday.
markkat··on Progress of anti-aging therapies by clinical trial stage
Agreed. If you want to add to it, there's evidence that sauna and donating blood have benefits as well.

markkat··on Ask HN: How do you create a successful community from zero?
I created https://hubski.com, which has been around for 9 years. Hubski isn't big, but we have a quality community that brings joy.

To grow, my friends and I just started posting and chatting.

Personally, I think commercialization is antithetical to some types of communities. I wrote this post titled "The social aggregator is a terrible business model" a few years ago: https://hubski.com/pub/219234

markkat··on Cut global emissions by 7.6% per year for next decade to meet 1.5°C Paris target
Do you have a citation for current simulations?

The +9m to +31m isn't from simulations. It's from ice core sample and sediment analysis.

markkat··on Cut global emissions by 7.6% per year for next decade to meet 1.5°C Paris target
Over the last 40M years, when CO2 was at current levels (400ppm), sea level was +9 to +31 meters higher. We need to reduce to 280ppm to start rebuilding ice.

Coastal cities are going to move.

markkat··on Show HN: I made a no-bullshit image host
Cool. Will do. We are a quiet bunch, so it should be modest.
markkat··on Show HN: I made a no-bullshit image host
This is great. I think I am going to integrate into Hubski, and pay for our users. I hope you stick around.

Imgur is awful.

markkat··on Tesla Cybertruck
I am of the same demo. I agree it is ugly, but ugly in a good way.
markkat··on DuckDuckGo's traffic keeps growing
I repeatedly tried to switch to DDG from Google for the past several years. DDG kept improving, but always fell short. About a year ago, I felt that DDG's results surpassed Google's in quality. Ironically, I think Google's "personalization" has something to do with it. I don't think Google is serving results for my benefit because serendipity is part of why I am searching in the first place.

I also swapped Chrome for Brave. Thank you, DDG.

markkat··on Face transplant recipient’s donor face now failing
There's actually a significant decline in quality and quantity that continues with age. That's why we cryopreserve them. If brought down to liquid nitrogen temp properly, they can remain viable nearly indefinitely.
markkat··on Face transplant recipient’s donor face now failing
The annual storage fees ($250/yr) cover our banking costs. The banking needs little more than invoicing to remain viable, and with the numbers we have banked, it could survive as a stand-alone entity, or would be an asset that could be acquired by another banking service. My cells are in there, as are those of many of my family members. I want them available 20 years from now. Of course, we aspire to mature beyond a startup, and are getting there. :)
markkat··on Face transplant recipient’s donor face now failing
This issue is why I started Forever Labs (YCS17). We bank your stem cells. Immunity presents many difficult problems to be solved. I’d rather worry about the therapeutic developments alone rather than add immunity on top of it.
markkat··on Emergent Tool Use from Multi-Agent Interaction
Has any intelligence arisen without multi-agent interaction?

Probably belongs in our definition of intelligence.

markkat··on Arctic Summer Melt Shows Ice Is Disappearing Faster Than Normal
Here's what we can do:

1. Refuse to support politicians that do not see this as the grave issue it is. Most other political issues won't matter if we cannot change the course of global warming.

2. Spread awareness. Update yourself on the facts, and share them with your friends and family.

3. Plant trees like crazy.

markkat··on Geoff Ralston taking over as President of YC
Congratulations, Geoff! I haven't had higher-impact educational/professional experience than having Geoff as a group partner. He's a natural. Optimistic about the future of YC.
markkat··on Medium is a poor choice for blogging
This cycle has been repeated and will continue to be repeated until the underlying economic models change.
markkat··on Ask HN: Has anyone undergone stem cell treatment for auto-immune disease?
Sure.

It definitely needs more study.
