markkat··on Don't Wordle
Nice. I play Last Word daily.

https://dragonfjord.com/lastword/

It's the same goal, but everyone starts with the same word each day, which does not include any letters in the "last word".

No undos in Last Word. My average is 8.7 letters. Really hoping to get it to 9.

markkat··on Why the Ocean Cleanup hasn't solved the plastic pollution crisis
We need to tax non-degradable plastics for this externality. Also, I highly doubt this is from run-off of plastics carried to the sea. It's far more likely it's just being dumped. Probably much of it from people that thought it was getting recycled.
markkat··on San Diego photologs from the 1970s
IMHO comparably, cars today look depressing. So soulless, so similar, so boring. White/grey/silver/black, maybe a few boring blue or burgundy.
markkat··on Sports supplement creatine makes no difference to muscle gains, trial finds
Those error bars suggest this was underpowered, and it did find a significant increase in females:

Poor interpretation of the study.

markkat··on Why does anything exist?
Existence is interaction.
markkat··on Tell HN: I'm Afraid We're Shutting Down
It really saddens me to hear this. It was an honor to get to know you as batchmates. Your passion and drive for 70MR made a mark upon me.

I know that this is just another beginning for you, full of new opportunities, and that you will continue to help and inspire people. Godspeed!

markkat··on Twitter enables tipping with Bitcoin, plans to let users authenticate NFTs
It's really consistent and strange considering the ostensive nature of the site.
markkat··on Tech giants join call for funding U.S. chip production
These industries squeezed the blood out of US suppliers to compete on cost. I don't think a correct solution is the government building capacity and supply chains.

IMHO a more sustainable strategy is the government taxing the environmental and human rights externalities of off-shore production.

markkat··on Uniswap v3
For now.
markkat··on NFTs Are a Pyramid Scheme and People Are Already Losing Money
The legal system will recognize it, and attribution protocols are being built. Removing middlemen like title companies is an efficiency, not overkill.
markkat··on NFTs Are a Pyramid Scheme and People Are Already Losing Money
A house is linked to a title. The title is a paper token.
markkat··on HN front page ranked using only votes from early users (2009)
It'd be very cool if you could set the classic date in your profile.
markkat··on Bitcoin and other PoW coins are an ESG nightmare
I expect that once Ethereum completes the switch to PoS, this issue is going to loom large for Bitcoin.
markkat··on Hobbyists beat professional designers in creating novel board games
If you use a product, you are aware of things that people that don't use it, aren't.
markkat··on No More KYC with ShapeShift
>When an individual is accused of a criminal offense, it may be reasonable to dissolve their privacy to some degree in the search for truth about that offense. >However, KYC dissolves the privacy not of certain specific individuals accused of wrongdoing, but the privacy of all individuals, none of whom have been accused of anything. >We can do better than that as a society. Warrantless surveillance of all people cannot be our standard.

So glad to see this view rising up. When so many private and public parties are required to collect my private data, how can it remain private? I've had unemployment claims made in my name this year due to a breach, and it was on me to fight the fraud that would harm me. The collection of private data does not protect us, it results in a honeypot and puts us at risk.

markkat··on EFF to FinCEN: Stop Pushing for More Financial Surveillance
n. The quality or condition of being secluded from the presence or view of others. n. The state of being free from public attention or unsanctioned intrusion.
markkat··on EFF to FinCEN: Stop Pushing for More Financial Surveillance
We should not sacrifice privacy to make law enforcement easier. It's ok to make law enforcement work harder and less efficiently rather than the people they serve.
markkat··on I Have Resigned from the Google AMP Advisory Committee
This committee is window-dressing. AMP is about Google revenue alone, remaking the web as a consumer portal, not an open platform for information exchange and creativity.

The premise that the web ought to compete with native app experience is flawed to begin with. Executing that goal through a corporate gateway is perverse.

markkat··on Bitcoin Hits New All-Time High
As evidenced by the replies here, most people don't understand Ethereum, much less what is being done with Ethereum atm. Most people still don't know what DeFi means, or know that Ethereum has more nodes, processes more transactions per day, has thousands of more devs building with it, that real estate shares are issued on it (https://realt.co/), or that tokenized digital art is selling for millions on Ethereum (https://usaherald.com/beeple-an-iconic-digital-artist-sells-...). etc. Most don't know that $2.3B (0.62%) of BTC is locked in custody to be traded as an Ethereum token (https://defipulse.com/wbtc) as to get access to financial istruments built on Ethereum.

Eventually this will be common knowledge, but it isn't yet. It's early days.

markkat··on Ethereum 2.0 launches
If more than half of the nodes adopted an update with that cap changed, it would change. It'd probably result in a fork.
markkat··on Ethereum 2.0 launches
I see the opposite happening, as rent-seeking models like that of the recording industry are replaced.

Also, this regards the music an artist makes and sells, not every aspect of their life.

markkat··on Ethereum 2.0 launches
It makes me sad, because I expected a comment like this to be the highest on HN.

In the case of Ethereum, digital scarcity secured by a blockchain enables a turing complete state machine that the world can use. In the most basic terms, this will remove clearing houses for transactions of assets. In the long term this will lead to novel types of assets, and make ownership extremely liquid. Imagine using your phone to buy shares in a recording artist you just discovered, and selling those shares when they win a grammy. Imagine building a stream of passive income based on the shares you've earned in projects you've worked on throughout your life.

As an example, already, anyone in the world can buy property in the US: https://realt.co/

What the web did for infomation, Ethereum will do for value.

markkat··on Is carbon capture a viable solution?
>In the IEA's "Clean Technology Scenario", more than 28 GtCO2 could be captured from industrial facilities between now and 2060.

We emit about 35-40 GtCO2 per year. So in 40 years, we might expect carbon capture to remove less than one year of emissions.

Not useless, but close, considering the investment which could be used instead to more rapidly reduce emissions by installing/improving solar, wind, geothermal, etc.

markkat··on As internet forums die off, finding community can be harder than ever
I've been running hubski.com for 10 years now. Luckily we have remained small enough to have mostly small problems. Similar situation though, no ads, no revenue. I intend to keep it going as long as possible.

>Fun times.

It is important to keep it fun. I've done silly things like https://hubski.com/weather and I am seriously considering adding user vs user chess.

I rolled a custom IRC that I am pretty proud of: https://hubski.com/chat

markkat··on Disaster prepping is mainstream again
They enable a messaging network?
markkat··on Disaster prepping is mainstream again
Thanks. :) It works. Just limited to a single stream of posts atm. But will do.
markkat··on Disaster prepping is mainstream again
I am planning on a proper ‘Show HN’, but I’ve been working on something for quite a time that has prepper use-cases.

Most people have phones. Technically, they don’t need a third party to talk to each other. It seemed like there should be a communication option that took advantage of that.

Thus, Tin-Can: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/tin-can/id1435356247

In short, TC is a one-to-many messaging app that has no central service. Proximate phones use BLE to sync.

My mom is headed to high ground in FL atm due to Eta.. I think it’d be useful if phones could all do this natively.

FWIW, I just got it on iOS, and updates like replies are forthcoming. But feedback is appreciated if you try it out. I’ll do a show HN once a few features are completed and bugs squashed.

markkat··on Stripe Climate
Rotting trees (and the leaves they drop) add carbon to the ground, creating organic soil.
markkat··on Stripe Climate
I agree.
