markedathome··on Can you reverse engineer an ASIC?

markedathome··on Can you reverse engineer an ASIC?
Earlier this year I watched a video from a conference where a researcher took a die shot (one of Ken's I think) and then did guided learning by identifying on the image which were the different layers, metals, and layout of the gates on the die. The machine learning algorithm could go off and identify other gates and provide a netlist(?).

I've tried searching REverse, and some of the hacker conferences from January, but haven't found it yet.

markedathome··on Quake – 30th Anniversary Update
I've really seen it a lot in Discord channels that have [emoji]channelname Occasionally in some channels lists may be bullets with emojis particularly the welcome/rules, usually to match reaction emojis, or to automate channel(s) selection (click on the youtube icon to get notified when a youtube vid is posted, etc.)
markedathome··on Proxmox VE now available for ARM64
rpi4 and rpi5 both can use UEFI, and there are various people who already have Proxmox running on a PI5. jeffgeerling has a comment pinned at the top of his Level2jeff video[1], and a comment to that has a link to a rpi5 uefi repository.

markedathome··on Cyberpunk Video Games
Another interesting game missing is NeoTokyo[1], essentially a "Ghost in the Shell" skin as a half-life mod. It had a soundtrack by Ed Harrison that was available to download, though it seems as though the site hosting is down.

Neon Giant have an FPS game called No Law, which is to be released later this year, which is based in a Cyberpunk-style world.

markedathome··on The coolest use for the Vision Pro
You might want to look at these videos with regards to using archviz in Unreal Engine with a photogrammetry visual set. BIM output can be used if you have more experience with architectural CAD toolsets. The plugins are available now except the BIM which is slated to be open by the end of August/Summer.

markedathome··on Red Hat Technical Writing Style Guide
Are there any comparisons between this and other style guides from the likes of IBM, DEC, Sun, Apple (Early MacOS), Microsoft, etc?

All of these had in-house printshops, so would have had some style guides even if just to provide consistency for internal use.

markedathome··on Honda conducts successful launch and landing of experimental reusable rocket
Using a Class N rocket motor, the High Steaks rocket reached about 8500m, earlier this year. I think Joe abandoned the thrust vector control for control surfaces within the fins to stabilise rotation.

markedathome··on 5G networks meet consumer needs as mobile data growth slows
> The Unreal Engine 5 demo, "The Matrix Awakens", is a download of more than a terabyte. That's before decompression.

The PS5 and Xbox Series S/X both had disks that were incapable of holding a terabyte at the launch of The Matrix Awakens. Not sure where you are getting that info from, but both the X S/X and PS5 were about 30GB in size on disk, and the later packaged PC release is less than 20GB.

The full PC development system might total a TB with all Unreal Engine, Metahumans, City Sample packs, Matrix Awakens code and assets (audio, mocap, etc) but even then the consumer download will be around the 20-30GB size as noted above.

markedathome··on Amazon blew Alexa's shot to dominate AI, according to employees (2024)
The current favourite frustration of reddit seems to be that in the past you could cancel requests, by saying "Never mind".

Apparently now saying "Never mind" gets you an in-depth speech about Nirvana's album, or it playing.

markedathome··on Motion sickness accessibility in video games
I've often wondered if there is a problem with 'handedness', or more specifically 'footedness' whereby my brain is expecting the motion to start off with my right foot moving forwards first, but the game model goes left foot first. Mixed with head bobbing as well this throws off the brain's balancing model, as everything is "opposite". Certain games I have immense problems within 15 minutes playing, such that I feel drenched in cold sweat and nauseous, others I can play for hours or more without a problem, even if they are the same type of games. For instance Quake nope, Unreal tournament fine. Rainbow Six Siege fine, CoD not a chance, though Battlefield is fine. Maybe there needs to be something in games like the goofy test that snowboarders use to decide which foot forward for orientation, but more developed for motion sickness?

markedathome··on Why did clothing become boring?
Much comedy was born of the "bathe wearing your jeans" and lying on the bed trying to get tight jeans over the thighs, especially during the late 80s. Then came leggings and lycra woven into jeans that now allow slipping tight jeans on without too much fuss.
markedathome··on Phased Array Microphone (2023)
Microsoft Research had papers on speaker arrays that allowed speaker focus and noise cancelling a couple of decades ago. I think the technology eventually ended up in the Kinect.

I think Cisco had something similar in their large screen meeting room video conferencing systems that could do positional audio tracking of multiple people. Could be wrong, but I think that was at least 10 years or so ago, if not more.

markedathome··on Thomas E. Kurtz has died

markedathome··on The Impact of Jungle Music in 90s Video Game Development
The "Spaceman" track was used in a Levi's ad[1] which used the intro. Then everyone went out and bought the single, and rocketed it up the charts in a lot of countries. At the time there was much disappointment that the rest of the song was not like that intro.

markedathome··on Australia's 3G Shutdown – Why your 4G/5G Phone is now Blocked
Hugh Jeffrey's video[1] on this block demonstrates the phones might be blocked, though it seems to vary depending on phone, and which telco's SIM. Often it can block one SIM from working, whilst a similar SIM will work in slot 2. or vice versa. Or they are both blocked after rebooting. Or maybe not.

at the time of writing the above video is listed in the OP article near the beginning. I believe Hugh references James' work in this and other videos covering the topic.

markedathome··on CityGaussian: Real-time high-quality large-scale scene rendering with Gaussians
The Matrix Awakens demo had some of the assets released to the Unreal Engine marketplace as separate packs, [1]the map, [2]buildings, crowds, and vehicles.

The matrixcity map is different, but is somewhat similar to that of the map in Matrix Awakens. You can see from the design breakdown on [3] this page by a technical lead on the Matrix Awakens project.

edit. If you look further into the [4]github codebase, under the MatrixPlugin section it explicitly states that they used the city-sample project.
