I remember my happiest memories to be in school, surrounded by careless, daring, funny, and oft-swearing people. In classes, but not only in them.
I remember I was happy when I was running track and cross-country. A bunch of guys and girls running on the side of the road on a sunny day at a decent pace: chasing cars and talking. We didn't give two shits about money or things, these things seemed to have fatten us, make us less free. Even shirts were too much!
Yes, social situations around physical activities were peaks of my happiness.
So live in the moment, that's all you ever get and don't worry about stuff you can't control.
The time between 2pm and 6pm is the absolute peak of cognitive weakness. The only thing I do well in that time is sleep. It's like a dead zone.
>Clothes are communication.
Bingo. But what is dress code if not an attempt at killing communication?
So what do you have when you have all employees dressed in slacks and shirts and suits? Isn't it an attempt at supressing communication? An attempt at supressing individuality and instead forcing a corporate culture of obedience, brainwashing, mindless loyalty and mediocrity?
Fuck that! I will not be forced to be dressed in a suit. I might choose to wear a suit if I want to communicate obedience and professionalism. I might choose to wear a turtleneck sweater and jeans. I might choose to wear a ripped tshirt and shorts. I might choose to wear a robe or pajamas. See where I'm going with this?
You are asking for communication yet asking me to lie? You want respect? Fuck respect, fuck professionalism, and fuck all these things that make life sour, dead, and joyless.
You say respect and seriousness. Since when did respect became better than honesty and truthfulness? Since when did "seriousness" became more important that joyful curiousity, aesthetics, and playfulness? Since when banality became better than destructive creativity?
I will die, I know that. And I will not spend my short life dressed up and living like some fucking corporate schmuck wants me to because it's "professional" or "serious".
Yeah, programmers aren't special. I'm not arguing that programmers should be exceptions to dress code. I'm arguing that dress code in itself should be placed on the shelf with slavery, religion, and all those other retarded mores.
If you have computers and electricity, by 10-11pm it will be significantly cooler outside so if you have a deck or roof or backyard, try sleeping there.
Signing contracts, however, isn't hard and so I worked as an independent contractor (1099) :)
After I turned 16 I enrolled in a community college, fully paid by high school, using a local dual enrollment program. When I was 15 I started working as a C++ developer, which was quite fun.
Yes, I was a freak and still am a completely asocial misanthrope. But no one is limited -- it is solely by choice (and probably fear of the unknown) that children stay in high school.
Tea (black mostly like Red Rose, Earl Grey, English Breakfast with honey/sugar).
Water (after a run and before).
Perrier bubbly water.
Buttermilk.
Milk.
Diet coke, sprite zero, and other junk less often.
Sugarfree red bull.
1. Pull init code from old repository.
2. Find function that accepts the data.
3. Insert init code into the class.
4. Debug and see if it works.
5. Write callback for accepting data from TCP.
6. Link callback to init.
7. Refactor.
Then, as I have successfully broken down the huge (2-4 hr for me) task into 20-30 minutes tasks I go and run, or swim, or play 3d shooters (love Tribes 1). Interestingly, while I do that, my brain subconsciously works on the stuff from todolist and when I get back and look at the tasks it's extremely easy to get started, plus, I got a chance to think of a better way (if exists) to do stuff.
It's just not fun to jog at 9 minute/mile pace.
As for shoes, wouldn't worry about them. Best runners I've met (sub 4:30 mile) use Nike and Asics, and I haven't noticed correlation between shoe size and how good a person runs. A much bigger correlation usually appears to be between person's gut and how easy he or she runs :)
Seriously, I came from Ukraine when I was 12 and being an out-of-shape immigrant and a nerd made my life in American school a living hell.
The problem I remember having the most was isolation. It's interesting because people did make fun of me in Ukraine all the time, but we made fun of everyone and were pretty much all friends, we conversed a lot, even when we were fighting.
In U.S. it's just different, people ignore you. Spending 8 hours in a place where no one talks to you except for teacher (and several accidental buddies) is pretty miserable. I often thought it'd be easier if I was bullied, at least someone would fucking notice me. Took me a around 4-5 years before I became a misantrophist and just started hating everyone by default and that's sort of how I managed living here.
Where's my place in dictionaries? :P
