manish··on Steve Jobs, circa 2020: "Thoughts on country roads"
Many low clearance cars like Ferrari and Lamborghini do not run on our roads, we just drive other cars, so why not wait and see what market decides.
manish··on India's copyright proposal: DRM circumvention OK if no intent to infringe
From Wikipedia: "Andres Guadamuz, a lecturer in law at the University of Edinburgh discovered that the International Intellectual Property Alliance (IIPA) representing the U.S. media industry is urging the United States government to consider countries like Indonesia, Brazil and India to be put on the Special 301 watchlist because of them mandating or suggesting the use of open source software, somehow considering it as a harmful act roughly equivalent to not combating piracy, and not taking into account that also many of the U.S. companies that the IIPA represents depend on using open source software in their own business" I hope that India will always stay on top of 301 list
manish··on Why Linux is not attracting young developers
I think it is because the learning curve for a kernel is so steep that you will have to spend a lot of time and energy learning the kernel before you can do any significant development. It would have been more meaningful if the author had compared linux attraction to that of any bsd clones. Comparing to iphone is kind of misleading.
manish··on Squaring two digit numbers in your head
I had read in Surely You are joking Mr Feynman, squaring numbers near 50 is really easy, for example, 49xx2 is (50 - 1)xx2 which is 2500 - 100 + 1 that is 2401.
manish··on How my site disappeared from Google search
If your site does not work, it goes down in google search
manish··on Why I don't write about programming and why it's not really worthwhile to do so
I first read the comment, then saw who has written it. I was shocked its PG. This is the person who wrote essay named trolls. I thought PG is oblivious to trollish comments.
manish··on Hackers and Painters
I thought it was submitted earlier, wanted to see discussions.
manish··on Court: Microsoft violated patent; can't sell Word
"Microsoft has said that it and the public will both suffer if Word goes off the market while the company devises a workaround."

I am touched by Microsoft's concern for public.

manish··on Obama Admits That He’s Never Used Twitter, Thinks The Chinese Should Be Able To
I can understand that a president should make these types of publicity gimmicks, but having some one else to update your twitter account which 2 million people believe yours is unfair. Why admit now, why not before?
manish··on How demand for oil will change by 2030
No one is saying any cause. Just prediction. Doesn't rising number of cars, also include electric or other alternative energy?

manish··on Vi in JavaScript, in your browser
Wow, simply great. It would be nice to open files in your computer and use them. I could not open any file by :n filename command. Also record command, which is very useful is missing. I am not sure for what this can be used?
manish··on [dead]
May be a flag duplicate will help. Its easier for us to tell some duplicate post which comes as blog, different url, different site etc, compared to filters.
manish··on Microsoft announces ad-supported Office 2010 Starter Edition
No thanks, I will use google docs Edit: Microsoft does not yet realize the threat it has from OO of google docs. Google did not give a limited capability search for free users. I read in one of PG's essays, "Get all the users and advertisers will follow. I can only see a half hearted effort from Microsoft, which will never capture all users. I would rather prefer full functionality OO compared to half functionality MS office.
manish··on IBM undercuts Google with discount e-mail service
"None of those features are included in IBM's package.

Even so, IBM believes its service, called LotusLive iNotes, can beat Google because it has a much larger sales force and relationships with corporate customers going back long before Google co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin were even born in 1973."

I give up.

manish··on One Small Leap for Open Source, One Giant Leap for Mankind
When you sell a mechanical tool, the user can take it apart and construct a similar tool on his own. This will take the advantage of innovation done by the engineer without paying him much. The patent protects the engineer from this exploitation. The users cant take apart a closed source software and reconstruct it. Now a days with few of the arm cores I have worked with, you cant even step through some proprietary code which is running. When you already have protection why would you want a patent. Another thing is the large companies abusing the patents and threatening some new companies.

manish··on Ask HN: ideas for little projects you have?

manish··on Judge Orders Google To Deactivate User's Gmail Account and Disclose Identity
Good finding. I hope there is some way to appeal in a higher court.
manish··on Judge Orders Google To Deactivate User's Gmail Account and Disclose Identity
There should be some way to fight this. It is not acceptable for some one send you a wrongly addressed email and then make court deactivate your email account. I wonder how could a Judge rule this way?
