managerclass··on Turkey’s earthquakes show the deadly extent of construction scams
I think that's more of a problem with zoning codes and environmental impact regulations than building codes.
managerclass··on India’s government wants total control of the internet
I guess my question is if US tech companies don't comply with the Indian government and gets shut down, wouldn't an identical company who will comply with the Indian government just take its place?

The censorship is taking place either way right? Why not take the money?

managerclass··on Subprime loans for college hiding in plain sight
Don't know if it'll make Colleges more affordable, but it'll definitely deter lenders from giving out loans to applicants that aren't as academically inclined or going into majors that have a low earnings potential.

The idea of banks having a risk free loans never really made sense to me...

managerclass··on Ranked-Choice Voting Is More Democratic, Not Less
MA tried to change to ranked choice voting but people didn't vote for it. I'm guessing most at the ballot were confused about what it was and just default voted no.
managerclass··on The bottom is dropping out of Netflix
But how do you actually find content that you like?

Sometimes I have to go though 4-5 different shows/movies on various streaming networks before I find something worth watching and even then, the shows usually get really bad by season 2-3. I can't imagine how wasteful it would be to have to buy all these bad shows instead of just streaming them.

managerclass··on Ask HN: How do you deal with existential crisis?
Honestly this was me until I met my gf. Alleviated a lot of the social pressure from being single.
managerclass··on Blockfi agrees to pay $100M in penalties and pursue registration
> BlockFi had to agree to stop doing all that illegal stuff

Have they though?

From Blockfi:

"As part of the resolution, existing U.S. BlockFi Interest Account (BIA) clients will maintain their accounts and receive interest as they always have, but cannot add new assets to their accounts as of today, February 14, 2022. Further, U.S. persons will not be able to open new BIAs. Following completion of the SEC registration process for BlockFi Yield, BIAs of U.S. clients will be exchanged for BlockFi Yield, unless a client instructs BlockFi otherwise. BIAs of BlockFi clients outside of the U.S. are not subject to today’s resolution."

Sounds like existing accounts can continue to function and accrue interest but no addition new users or assets can be deposited until they get SEC approval.

managerclass··on Covid-19 takes serious toll on heart health–a full year after recovery
My cynical view is that it's more profitable to treat life threatening issues than trying to keep you healthy which would only result in less profits for hospitals. The whole incentive structure of health care leads to very bad outcomes.
managerclass··on Covid-19 takes serious toll on heart health–a full year after recovery
I personally don't see that many 60 year old white men flexing at the gym before/during Covid but then again I'm from Texas.
managerclass··on Covid-19 takes serious toll on heart health–a full year after recovery
Contact tracing, heavy testing would've been a good happy medium. It don't have to be all or nothing.
managerclass··on Covid-19 takes serious toll on heart health–a full year after recovery
Contact tracing at the very least. It controls spread while allow places to stay open. Seems like the US just threw up their hands and decided that it was too difficult logistically and alternating between partial lockdowns and letting people who whatever.
managerclass··on Poll: Is the leetcode grind necessary to land a high paying remote job?
If the true purpose of algorithm tests was to be non-discriminatory, the interview and interviewee should not be able to see each other, their voices should be masked to hide nationality/accent, and resumes should not be viewed when solving the problems. I assure you I can still discriminate against a candidate both consciously and subconsciously during a live algorithm question now.

I guess one upside of these types of interviews is I've been able to disqualify candidates just because I don't like them and saying they didn't do well on the algorithm question as justification is a easy way to reject them without much explanation.

And what about every other field that doesn't use leetcode style interviews? Does a biotech company make their interviewees do lab work live? What makes software engineering so special that we need a different interview process?

managerclass··on Midwest Developer
Agreed. Anecdotal evidence coming from a suburb of a large city says absolutely nothing about diversity living in the rest of the US.
managerclass··on Midwest Developer
If by diversity you mean segregated:

managerclass··on YouTube TV loses ESPN, ABC and other Disney channels in fee dispute
I guess buying a TV antenna isn't completely free but it gives you the same benefit as these online channels, doesn't consume your data cap, and lets you watch sports and local news.

I bought a $10 antenna from channel master and it's been a great investment.

managerclass··on Amazon still isn't doing enough to stop bait-and-switch reviews
What do you use as an alternative to Yelp for finding restaurants?
managerclass··on Amazon still isn't doing enough to stop bait-and-switch reviews
It's been a while since I've used sort by average customer review. Only useful sorts are "featured" or possibly price if you put in some filter parameters on the side. Anything else is just asking for hot garbage.

There are few things that I buy from amazon now that aren't shipped and sold by amazon. I just don't trust third party sellers unless it's a 'direct' seller aka the company making the product. Almost would prefer if amazon would just remove all third party sellers but I guess they need to maintain their reputation of being the everything store.

managerclass··on Nassim Taleb says Bitcoin is an open Ponzi scheme and a failed currency
There's many cryptocurrencies that are designed to be infinite. How does that change anything?
managerclass··on Nassim Taleb says Bitcoin is an open Ponzi scheme and a failed currency
I guess he doesn't have "skin in the game" anymore?
managerclass··on Nassim Taleb says Bitcoin is an open Ponzi scheme and a failed currency
Ask any criminal on the dark web weather Bitcoin has value or not. Having an asset that no government can take away from you is invaluable.
managerclass··on Brexit’s top donor outed as Bitfinex, Tether parent shareholder
Yeah no other media organization ever uses exaggerated language to get clicks.
managerclass··on In India, smartphones and cheap data are giving women a voice
The statistic is saying that 20% of women in India participate in the workforce as it is defined.

Are you trying to say that the 60% of Chinese women includes women who are homemakers and aren't in the workforce as it is defined?

managerclass··on In India, smartphones and cheap data are giving women a voice
TIL China has a higher female labor participation rate than the US. Unexpected.
managerclass··on Hiring for tech jobs has increased more than 100% in these Midwestern cities
I completely agree. I made the mistake of taking a lower paying job in a lower cost area at the start of my career. When I did move to a higher paid area, I found that new grads were almost being paid my rate.
managerclass··on Hiring for tech jobs has increased more than 100% in these Midwestern cities
Probably because it's measuring the last 3 years and Madison already had a sizable tech workforce for many years now.

Good area. Wish more people wore masks though.
