malmsteen··on The Pittsburgh Suspect’s Internet of Hate
The main argument against what you say is that you believe that a bad idea will diseappear by itself if its in the open. Its not and theres thousands of examples to show that it can propagates and contaminate parts large chunks of society(historically: "gays are sicks", "blacks are not humans". More recently: "jews control the world" is making a surprising comeback in parts of europe).

Whereas when you silence it, it diseappear overnight and sometimes ots a good thing. I personally think the "hate speech" classification and ban on is a good thing. I dont agree full freedom of speech is a good thing.

I agree however that its stupid to associate too much killers with the ideology they claim to belong. They are just psychos / weirdos most of the time.

They provoke a "backpropagation" of the force you are exercising in the orthognonals of the machine work axis directly into your joints. Risk of injury at heavy weights. doesnt happen with free weights

malmsteen··on But don’t let that distract you; it was designed to kill people (2017)
I never really get why military has such a bad press in the programmer's crowd.

I mean sure, killing people is bad in a society but it's precisely because the world has been so far a succession of ruthless wars between groups of people that having a military is a good thing to protect you.

I know the "military kills unethically etc.." and "we are a peaceful world etc.." arguments but maybe people are getting a bit too, and wrongly, "certain" that it will last. If anything, history has shown that it's a succession of cycles until the next wars. Better be able to be the strongest ones.

I've been in my country's military (Europe) and most of the people are not psychopath (a few, sure). they are normal people thinking their job is an important one to protect peace at home.

So yeah "just don't go to job that makes you uncomfortable". It's the only takeaway i get from that article but i don't share the military shaming. Would have been more convincing with a oil industry or "on-demand market" example

malmsteen··on Ask HN: What things have richly rewarded the time invested in mastering them?
>>> I'll counterpoint this and say chances of getting injured can be pretty low if you take your time and study up on your form.

Yes absolutely ! And you build muscle WAY MORE FASTER with real weights versus calisthenics

The two rules of the gyms are basically : no machines, and 'form before weight' (i.e. master a movements at a given weight without feeling hurt before moving up).

The only two actually dangerous movements are deadlift and squats and it takes at least a PT sesion + a few "form check " on r/fitness to get it right but once it his mastered it's all good. Alsso bench press but it really start being possibly dangerous at 80kg and you are aready quite developped anyway so you are already supposed to master the basic of form an training.

malmsteen··on Ask HN: Do AI/ML companies actually have real customers?
A lot of compagnies do basically an externalisation of ml: they are providing the team the compagny would build if they had to do the job themselves.

Usually their website is buzzwordy but they are not necearily too much vocal because they find their customers through direct contact. And they do have customers... theres a real market

In healthcare there are not ao much killer application yet in ai/ml and its true that a lot are running on investor funds, but in my opinion this will change soon.

malmsteen··on What it takes to stand up to authority
Late answer: your answer is quite level-headed I think.

I would say that first that I never said anything about gender-specific, or if i did it was a mistake.. My point is that every human (men or women) has a potential of violence that can be unleashed in many situations. This potential is the kind of thing that look "unnatural" "scary" or "bad" when you see it and don't feel it but feel naturalyou experience it.

Granted there's not many data / source in my answer. My point is just that I feel a bit weird when I see a lot of articles like this who talk about violence being an "unnatural" tendency of the humans when I think it is a very natural tendency (which we constantly try to make disappear in our peaceful societies, which is why it might look unnatural nowadays.).

malmsteen··on What it takes to stand up to authority
I've never understood how the classic interpretation of milgram that "people can become monster under authority" were remotely relevant.

"hurting other people" is just a natural tendency inside at least a large proportion if not all humans. That's why we've had so many wars in the history, bullys at school and abuse in generally ANY UNREGULATED ENVIRONEMENT (chrisitan schools in the 50s in france for example, prisons and in some way even the weinstein compagny). That's also why a lot of us love watching MMA, boxing, and why many people love, even secretly because society doesn't acknowledge this feeling, going at war [1].

We can argue all day whether it stems from a domination instinct, a fear of our own weakness or how this instincs have to be channeled into a more constructive force / healthy contribution for society but the point is that this instinct exists... probably in most persons.

At some point i suspect most participants in milgram experiment switched from the "this is horrible" voice in their head to the "my feelings tells me it's not horrible I feel in power it's cool I almost like it plus there's authority so i wont get punished so it's fine". It's not so much of a big deal.

I hates endless essays made to describe simple ideas.

Yes u need to have times of separation from the 'Leaded' group to enable the introspection which lead to rational thoughtful and more appropriatz decision making.

This is very clear in the military: a lot of brotherhoodship and fun in soldiers group, very little in officers. And both dont mix.
