makingstuffs··on Two-tier encryption in the UK
The BBC started reporting after the riots were in full swing and social media was already awash with information.

The point at which the BBC started reporting was the same as all other major news outlets: after the point that they just looked daft for not reporting it.

I know this as my videos of the riots took my little blog from 50 - 100 views a day to thousands per minute…

makingstuffs··on Two-tier encryption in the UK
Anyone old enough to remember the London riots should remember the fact that the acting government issued a D notice to all broadcasters, preventing them from reporting the issue.

This is part of what started the death of BBM and proliferation of news via social media. You’d go on Twitter and see all the reports or riots and burning buildings then go to the BBC and… nothing.

All of this is to say that successive British governments, over a span of decades, have been actively destroying freedom of speech and a right to privacy for its citizens.

With AI and the rise of populism combined with the absolute decimation of the average person’s attention span it is going to get a lot worse.

I don’t understand this mentality which I see over and over again on here. It’s not like the US frontier labs are beacons of morality and transparency.

It’s also pretty accepted within this community that a lot of data fed to US tech companies ends up with the Israeli government.

Meanwhile the current US government headed by Donny Tango has done a very thorough job of proving itself to be about as predictable and dependable as a rabid dog on crack.

Throughout the events which have transpired since a certain orange charlatan took office it is objectively true that the Chinese government has portrayed itself as a much more stable and sane entity.

We really need to stop this elitism and recognise the reality.

makingstuffs··on Our position on open-weights models
The whole article boils down to two points:

1. “I’m fine with ‘em, as long as they’re useless”

2. “The only authoritarian regime which can be trusted with such power is the one which benefits my company”

makingstuffs··on Kimi K3 Is Competitive with Fable; Kimi K3 and Fable Is SoTA
Agreed. An experiment is only as accurate as the methodology is sound.

Testing each lab’s model in its own harness just tells us how well the lab has performed. For the model’s performance we need a control and the only way to get the control is to either test all models in all harnesses or all models in the same harness

makingstuffs··on Kimi K3 Is Competitive with Fable; Kimi K3 and Fable Is SoTA
I don’t know that the methodology of the experiment is testing what it intends to test. With the current method we’re essentially testing each AI lab’s ability to efficiently extract data from their version of a transformer model.

To objectively test all models the harness would need to be the same and ideally independent. Failing that, all three models should be tested in all three harnesses and the output verified on a model x harness level and on an overall aggregated model x all harnesses level.

makingstuffs··on Kimi K3 Is Competitive with Fable; Kimi K3 and Fable Is SoTA
Would a fairer test not be to use the same harness for all three? I’d suspect the harness to massively affect token use and optimisation

There are no egalitarian societies. Societies in the west favour the super rich and believing anything else is simply delusional. Sorry to burst the bubble.

makingstuffs··on I bought Friendster for $30k – Here's what I'm doing with it
This sounds cool and similar to something I’ve been building! I say similar as we have different ideas and target audiences — What I’m building is a niche network specifically targeting people who are travellers or friends that like holidaying together. I don’t want to seem like I’m spamming or self promoting so will keep the link out but will share if people want.

Anyway, I digress, it would be great to connect and exchange ideas if you have the time? I really like the idea of fading connections.

makingstuffs··on DeepSeek v4
How can there be democracy in an environment where freedom of thought is all but nullified due to social manipulation through mainstream media. Calling something ‘free’ doesn’t make it so.

The reality is that the term democracy in western society has essentially become meaningless due to the swathes of algorithmic manipulation which occurs every second of everyday through every possible digital medium.

makingstuffs··on Claude Code to be removed from Anthropic's Pro plan?
It’s seems like there are a lot fishy smells coming from the timing of the mythos announcement and the reports of issues with casual users. Combine that with the mass rejection of 4.7 it kinda seems like they are burning their ‘non research’ users in order to keep the Mythos users warm.

I could be connecting unrelated dots here, but it sure as hell seems quite coincidental to me.

Yeah I think the web is more a tool than anything else nowadays and it being homogeneous is a good thing.

Think of roads. It’s one of few things that humans have managed to agree on across the planet and there’s a good reason for that. The system (regardless of which side you drive on) works. Signs, markings and materials are all pretty much identical wherever you go.

makingstuffs··on Claude Design
I’d say the only place I’ve experienced McDonald’s to be ‘extremely’ different is in India due to the obvious prevalence of vegetarianism and outlawing of beef.

In other countries the do have a lot of additional meals which are specific to their local taste (rice/fried chicken/different sauces) but the core burgers like a Big Mac, mcChicken and sides such as fries are there.

makingstuffs··on Miasma: A tool to trap AI web scrapers in an endless poison pit
I love the idea but this will only end up harming your SME in the long run. It would also further entrench the large corps.

The only way something like this would be remotely plausible as a concept would be for enough data providers with overlapping authority on given topics to implement it.

Sadly SMEs have no choice but to go with the flow and allow AI scrapers in. If they don’t, they won’t be as visible in AI generations at the top of the SERPs and they won’t get the visits, which will mean they don’t make the money required to stay afloat.

The fish that attempts to swim against the current ultimately dies and has its corpse carried where the current was going, anyway. Without the sway which comes with size your only option is to go with the flow and drop a little dirty protest every now and then.

makingstuffs··on Ask HN: How do you offload all coding to AI?
Yeah that pretty much aligns with my experience in regard to feature additions. It’s great at those due to the reasons you mentioned!
