maininformer··on What is Truth in this new AI world and how to make sense of it
Consider, have you ever known truth? how do you know?

Everything you experience is generated by your mind, you do not have a firsthand experience of what's out there. You are a brain in a skull, yet you see light and feel spacious and you feel like a body. It is all generated similar to a dream which is also generated.

Fun fact, I practice lucid dreaming and to become lucid I check to see if I'm dreaming by looking at my hand. If my hand looks AI generated, then I'm dreaming. Interpret as you wish.

Another fun fact, before you even know you have made a decision, your brain has made that decision for you. This is documented. So thinking you made a decision is an illusion.

Finally, what is a tree? a label, if I ask you to define a tree you will tell me it branches, trunk, leaves, root. What is leaf? a green thin layer used to generate food. What is green? ... you practice this and you realize even though you can function in a network of words, you don't actually know what any of these words really mean. So, again, you have never know the Truth. And never will.

So, I suggest, learn to relax; whatever happens trust that you can navigate it like everyone else. Plus how do you know it won't lead us to utopia?

Super worth it.
maininformer··on Ask HN: How do you not take criticism of your work personally?
Here is my approach:

It is okay to take criticism personally on the path to not taking it personally. Your thoughts and emotions are not you so first and foremost don't feel bad for feeling this way. I'm not saying you should act on them however.

I suggest sitting down and making time, remembering the feeling and then feeling it. No need to psychoanalyze, and have mental talk. Just feel the pure emotions and be curious about them. Where do you fee them? what shape do they have? how big they are? what texture do they have? etc

The point is to make the task of feeling your emotions interesting for your mind so it stays there enough to get used to it.

Hypothesis: When an emotion is causing us suffering it is usually because we don't want it, but unfortunately thats not how they go away, especially if they are big emotions.

After a while your mind will know the emotion so intimately that it will either be negligible or not come up at all.

Note however, if you go towards the emotion with the intention of it going away this will not work, there must be total acceptance. So cultivating that loving curiosity may actually be the hard part. The trick there is that I like to imagine myself as a child having these emotions and soothing this child as a caring adult.

There are other methods but this has been very helpful to me and I hope it will be helpful to you as well.

maininformer··on Navigating the world when your senses conjure up phenomena others can’t perceive
I don't know how severe yours is, but I meditate and I either developed or started noticing mine; then I found out many many meditators have it too. It is possible to not notice it in your day to day unless I focus on it.
maininformer··on Ask HN: How to Deal with ChatGPT Anxiety?
No need to worry. If and when the time comes that you are replaced by AI, you will have enough sense, courage and loved ones to navigate out of it. You won't be alone, thousand just like you will have the same problem. Trust your future self. That's my advice.

In the meantime if you think another skill or business might come in useful, do it. But do it calmly if possible. Anxiety will never help you do something better or more. Ever. If calm is not possible for you, then that is a skill I suggest you start cultivating.

ChatGPT can be tremendously helpful or dangerously wrong.

It is super useful for producing standard commands(how do I export env vars from a file). But for debugging its good for brainstorming at best. I asked why do my futures on my event-loop not execute it said cause python futures are lazy and asyncio ones are greedy. Which is wrong futures aren't lazy but crazy how convincing and reality-adjacent it was. it almost got me!

maininformer··on Exercise is medicine for cancer, even in late stages of the disease
I agree that its misleading to say "medicine", but I don't agree with the message of your second sentence. Forgive me if I'm assuming.

Consider that too much of anything is bad. If I understand correctly cancer has to do with cell reproduction rate.

So you can imagine then, that there could be an optimal rate of cell regeneration for longest life/cancer avoidance. Too low a cell regeneration rate(no exercise) and maybe, too fats a cell regeneration(10 times more exercise) both lead to cancer.

The point I am trying to elaborate is that a piece of information, even if they do not match all the cases they still are "significant".

maininformer··on Ask HN: How do I develop focus?
I can attest that just waking up early had a big positive effect on my life. Its more about discipline: Be in bed phone less by 10 PM every night. Then you will easily wake up at 6 and accomplish quite a lot by 8. Note for me that is just going to the gym
maininformer··on Ask HN: Starting a Career in Programming at 61?
If I were you, I would ask him to study up and then give him parts of my projects(you said you're a contractor) and we can see if it works out or not. If it does in a couple of years or four he can be a contractor himself under your mentorship.

Maybe thats what he's asking anyway ;)

maininformer··on Ask HN: How do you get out of a rut?
This is sound advice.

To trigger a change in perspective in me, I start cleaning and organizing. Finishing or closing projects. This brings me back where I started and I can rethink from afar.

Organize.

> " ... and now they decide that you're their ... mentor" I recommend reviewing this feeling. It is a success as a social creature if others go to you for help.

The fact that someone will go to you a second time is both natural and a testament to your helpfulness.

It is natural because if you have n choices and m are known to work and you are being risk averse you will choose one of m. Now of m=1 for far too long that is an organizational issue and I suggest either asking for more help or money.

maininformer··on Tips from ADHDers that will boost your productivity
Highly recommend watching Russle Barkley's videos about ADHD. A solution that works wonders for me, after watching Barkley and inspired by "Pact of Punishment" in the game Hades, is to set a penalty for myself. E.g. for everyday that I don't do a leetcode problem I will pay my partner 50 bucks. Thats a painful enough amount for me. I must add that this doesn't work for things in future, meaning in 3 months if I don't lose 5lbs I will pay 200 dollars; ADHD brain does not understand time well. Instead it should be planned out and executed in short time periods, daily or shorter. For instance: for every meal that I overindulge I will pay X. For everyday I don't go for a walk I will pay. This requires integrity and a partner who likes their money ;)
maininformer··on Ask HN: How best to prepare for Python interviews starting in 3 months?
1. Choose three companies now to apply to in three months 2. Research their interview style and focus on that 2.a If they are algo/ds heavy, do algoexpert; leetcode is a hit or miss 2.b If they are programming heavy, no suggestions from me but making apps in Python 2.c Probably not enough time for design but the boar book ( designig data intensive applications by martin kleppmann)
maininformer··on Gay men earn undergraduate and graduate degrees at the highest rate in the US
I'm gay.

I almost want to say it's the reverse: Gay men need to go through all the stages of denial before they come out and then, sometimes, witness it in whoever they come out too. I would then say trying to prove yourself _because_ you cannot achieve masculine ideals is moot.

This _does_ however apply to gay men who _aren'_ out. They need to overcompensate because they want to be ready in case they are shunned; i.e. if they are successful they won't need their family's support.

maininformer··on MLops Startups Profits
I am using such a company for my day to day, and in my experience it is less about providing resources and more about managing everything on them.

Model versioning, training artifacts versioning, training code versioning, training and test data versioning, providing developer environment on a gpu machine, serving a model and some more tasks are very costly for a company to implement on their own using open source tools.

A manager platform that does all that certainly is valuable and I will recommend it to any new ML team.

If these use cases don't click with you I suggest thinking through working with ML models long term on a team with a big customer base. What if you introduce new data and your model does better but then later does worse than the original? what if you tested your model and it had great performance but after 3 months in production it sucks, now you want to go back to your test data at the time and see why. what if you personal machine does not have gpus? what if you need a custom dev environment? what if different customers need your model at different versions of your training data.

I think it is rightfully a nascent niche.

maininformer··on Ask HN: Those of you who left tech, where are you now?
In my opinion you need a curriculum. If you are willing to spend, I suggest a bootcamp type of program and algoexpert. Otherwise an equivalent free version, i.e. a guided program into development and algo/ds.

The problem with leetcode and self study is that, as a student, you don't know what to focus on, everything has uniform weights.

maininformer··on Ask HN: Those of you who left tech, where are you now?
Leetcode is a very different skill and interest than software or building.

You say you picked up Elixir quickly, built cool stuff and enjoy reading about software. I know a lot of software engineers that software is just a job for them not a vocation or an interest.

I suggest you look at yourself more closely, are you leaving software or tech because of collateral hardships like interviewing and leetcode? or do you hate it?

Few things are interesting to a person, fewer yet interesting that they are also good at and rarely something that they can also get paid for handsomely. And everything will get harder and harder the more you want to grow in it.

You could get a cushy stagnant job somewhere. Consider if you would like it. If yes then you can do that right now in software.

If you wouldn't and you want to keep growing, the pain you're feeling could be from that drive within you.

Also please consider, the grass is always greener, do you feel about other professions the same way you feel about picking up a new book? learning something new? because the sweet promise of new beginnings definitely should not be the only reason to dictate a major decision.

maininformer··on Google Cloud offers a model for fixing Google’s product-killing reputation
Your comment surprises me.

App Engine 2 has nothing compared to App Engine 1. At a previous job we relied on App Engine 1's, task queues, user management, NDB, blobstore, memcached, image resizing, and I hope I'm not forgetting anything. We had to change our code to use, cloud tasks, our own user management, a new NDB(more on that later), GCS, Redis and no resizing.

This took around 2 years!

on NDB, the issue was that it had a major overhaul and needed _a lot_ of work. we started updating when it was in beta, i.e. stable logic with an unstable API. But I found some major issues with it, a couple with transactions; one instance was, when using the cache, transactional deletes don't work(!).

I do need to give a shoutout to the NDB dev team here who relentlessly debugged everything I posted. That was good support.

Point being, as a developer this took away a lot of trust from me for GCP. And I thought how well this behavior aligns with Google's product killing yolo energy. Hopefully this new initiative will prevent my children from suffering from the same divine test of patience.

you keep using them, one day one person will see the point and click and they will use it too; and it will snowball.

Not that simple. Time is usually a quarter not an hour. The amount of work is intermingled with value, perceived or actual.
