mahesh_gkumar··on Ask HN: Going from Developer to Manager. What should I know or learn?
Shameless plug -> https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/moving-management-mahesh-guru... . I use this with everyone on my team who wants to explore the management path. Happy to chat more if you want concrete examples about how I transitioned people over.
mahesh_gkumar··on Ask HN: Distributed programming (computing) jobs?
Amazon AWS is something that you should definitely look into. AWS is always hiring!
mahesh_gkumar··on Ask HN: How do you spend your free time in office?
I network. I will get coffee with folks (managers, ICs, Execs) who I randomly bump into in meetings, code reviews, fire drills etc and find out what they are working on, future job openings, collaboration opportunities, new product ideas, etc.
mahesh_gkumar··on Ask HN: Declining the job offer after accepting
If you really want to go with the startup, I recommend offering to pay back the money the tech company is spending on doing your visa transfer. This might keep a thin bridge alive between the two of you. Also, make sure the startup knows what is involved in doing a visa transfer, GC after that etc. Good luck!
mahesh_gkumar··on Ask HN: Framework for resolving disputes and technical disagreements?
If it's difficult to prove one way or the other, why do you care which option is chosen? Just pick one! if it doesn't work once released into production, pick something else! Remove emotions from the equation. No one should feel happy or sad that their option got chosen, nor should one feel happy or sad when that option works or fails. In the end, the only thing that should matter is the business value the solution is providing. Do you think your customers' care whose solution got picked? If people get 'hurt' easily when their solution is not chosen, then they need to grow up.
mahesh_gkumar··on Got 1.5% raise after a year at job. Now what?
Raises are basically useless to depend on these days as a way of increasing your income. In my 15 year career, I have seen an average of 2-3% raise and the highest I have seen is 10% when I got promoted. The fact that your salary is above average also plays against you, as most big companies have a formula for raises that is based on local market salary for a similar role. If you want to make more money, moving jobs, or getting promoted is the way to go, not raises. Another thing to consider, you have been in this role for only 1 year. Establishing trust takes time. If you are a rockstar developer, ask for more responsibility and get on the promotion track.
mahesh_gkumar··on Ask HN: Who wants to be hired? (February 2015)
I can write code and manage engineering teams/projects/scrums. I am looking for a engineering manager/lead type role where I have the opportunity to lead and grow a small team of engineers and at the same time allows me to code part time. Language Skills - Really language agnostic (I can pick up any language), but recently have been using Ruby a lot. I also developed www.petworkslabs.com from scratch and currently also maintain it. Its RoR based application running on heroku

Soft Skills - Have managed small teams of engineers (working in scrum) in the past. Mentored them, helped them with career path decisions, helped do their performance reviews etc.

Location - Boston, MA, USA

LinkedIn profile - https://www.linkedin.com/profile/view?id=20279287&trk=nav_re...

Email - mahesh.gkumar@gmail.com

Email is mahesh.gkumar@gmail.com. Didn't know that emails in the profiles are not public.
mahesh_gkumar··on Ask HN: Corporate software reuse assets database?
There are a lot of paid options...like Rational Asset Manager, Oracle eAM etc. The only OSS option that I have seen so far is http://www.fedora-commons.org/.
mahesh_gkumar··on Ask HN: Would you walk away from this?
I would absolutely engage...IF the senior management is committed to changing the status quo and is ready to invest money and time into the effort and is ready to make changes (including org changes) to make this effort happen. I have been in countless situations like these and the only times I have seen success is when the executive team is committed.

Also, don't expect anything drastic to change in 3 or even 6 months. 10-13 years old is a lot of time and the technical debt would probably be huge. If I have to guess, you are probably looking at a multi-year multi-project effort.

mahesh_gkumar··on Ask HN: Can someone with no visa (or wrong visa) create a Corp or LLC in USA?
A foreign worker can form an LLC in the US. You can also sponsor an H1B visa for a founder IF you can satisfy the employee employer relationship criteria (more http://www.uscis.gov/sites/default/files/USCIS/Laws/Memorand... or google) but basically it means the founder can't hire himself. There needs to be a board in place which can hire/fire the person in question.
mahesh_gkumar··on Do you need Front end? I'm looking for early adopters for my startup
Interesting idea...not sure how much it applies to me. I have my product (www.petworkslabs.com) up and running on basic bootstrap but feels it needs a bit of UX work. I can give your product a shot if you think it might help my product. Also, you have a typo on your home page (on the green button)
mahesh_gkumar··on Ask HN: How do you build your founding team?
I have tried using "match-making" sites before without much luck, but I personally feel that the best founders are folks who know each other (college, work etc) and have been in the trenches together.
mahesh_gkumar··on Ask HN: Need to interview a hacker for my paper about hacking
HN is a community of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hacker_(programmer_subculture) and not http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hacker_(computer_security)
mahesh_gkumar··on Show HN: Rattle.io new baby shower website, feedback needed
Few thoughts...

1. Your site is very confusing to me. Maybe a quick tutorial would be helpful?

2. Lot of UI quirks (as the other person has pointed out)

3. Why would I use your site versus the gazzillion other options available to me? It would be helpful if you mention your value proposition on your home page

mahesh_gkumar··on Why do managers prefer ONSITE developers?
I think your analogy is incorrect. When you get your oil changed, you are the customer and the person changing your oil does get monitored by his boss (manager), to make sure he does his job.

As a developer, you are not the customer, the people using your code are the customers. In the end its all about accountability and responsibility. If you take ownership of your code/issues, a good manager will see that and stop micromanaging.

mahesh_gkumar··on Ask HN: What did I do so wrong in this coding interview
I wish all companies who ask their candidates to solve a coding exercise give honest feedback like this after the end of the interview. Most times its just the canned 'Sorry you are not a fit' or the response the OP got.
mahesh_gkumar··on Ask HN: How can I quit smoking?
I quit cold turkey, but it took me a couple of tries to stick to it. I never thought about replacing it with anything. I just kept thinking about how I couldn't climb 2 flights of stairs without going out of breath, how my hair, clothes and fingers always stank, how smoking has taken over my life. I think it was the control thing that made me quit for good. I didn't want the cigarette to control my life.
mahesh_gkumar··on Ask HN: Inmigrate to USA, form LLC and work for myself?
Form an LLC with your friends in the US (who are legal residents). Make sure that you form a board which has the authority to fire you (this is needed for the h1b employee employer requirement). Make the company profitable, apply for h1, move.
mahesh_gkumar··on Show HN: Brix for Bootstrap
Then IMO, it should say that on your site :) and some reasonable explanation on how you landed on that number.
mahesh_gkumar··on Ask HN: How should a software engineer go about making a website?
Pray tell, why is ruby a terrible choice? You can get a basic website up and running with Rails in less than 10 mins.
mahesh_gkumar··on Show HN: Brix for Bootstrap
It bothers me when I see statements like '10x faster' ...10x faster than what? Hand coding? Using some other library?
mahesh_gkumar··on Ask HN: How can foreigners get a job in the USA?
A bigger company (with fancy lawyers) will have an easy time sponsoring someone's H1B than a startup. But I have seen startups sponsor H1Bs as well. If the startup is well funded, has traction and is a 'real' company, then I don't think they will have any issues sponsoring for a H1B.
mahesh_gkumar··on Ask HN: How can foreigners get a job in the USA?
H1B is for anyone who can convince the company they are interviewing with (you don't need to be a rockstar, ninja, herokai or anything like that. You just need to be honest, reasonably good and hard-working), that it is worth sponsoring that person. Typically if the company has interviewed 2-3 local folks with no success and you wow them, they will gladly sponsor your H1B . Bigger companies can do it much easier than smaller ones.

That is how I got my H1b.

mahesh_gkumar··on Show HN: Leadngin.com finally launched my startup after 18months of stealth.
What does a complete lead mean?
mahesh_gkumar··on Ask HN: Question about prospecting via email

mahesh_gkumar··on Ask HN: How to write a web app that will outlast the latest JS trends?
The way I look at it, I will not switch frameworks just because the web community says so. I will switch only when the current framework is causing issues (loss in productivity, stability issues, performance issues etc) and most importantly how does it better solve the problem your application was trying to solve in the first place. IMO, code, programming styles, frameworks (js or server side)and IT in general needs to align with the problem its trying to solve. Just changing because the community thinks its cool is for the birds.
mahesh_gkumar··on Show HN: just released our beta, please give us feedback
Hmm...so looks like its a better UI for popular CRMs? I can't really tell what the app does :(

Also, consider getting the text on all the pages proof read..there are a lot of grammar mistakes...
