maguirre··on Age of Empires: Definitive Edition Beta

maguirre··on El Salvador bans metal mining in world first

maguirre··on Mice treated with a protein from umbilical cord plasma showed improved memory

maguirre··on COAP endpoints on IKEA Trådfri

maguirre··on FCC prepares to pull broadband privacy rules adopted last year
At heart this seems like a terrible idea for consumers. can someone here help me see the counter argument as to why this would be a good idea?
maguirre··on [dead]
I think logic would be something like the following:

Boycotting US goods would affect one of the corner stones of Trump's campaign of bringing back jobs/improving US economy. A poor economy would lead people to eventually tire of Trump antics and his methods eventually leading to voting him ( and possibly those associated with him) out office

maguirre··on How to Become a ‘Superager’
in the same vein, could I get it done without going completely gray before 40
maguirre··on Russia Hysteria Infects WashPost: False Story About Hacking U.S. Electric Grid
I would argue that a reasonable person would actually read a correction. it's not exactly un ringing a bell but many of us come away with the truth even if we believed the original at first
maguirre··on Glenn Greenwald: Fake News That MSNBC Spread to Discredit WikiLeaks
I am genuinely curious. why do you think that?
maguirre··on Betrayed by a bitfield (2012)
I took your advice and went looking for it. I came away with the feeling that some people think they are useful some people thin they are evil. Did you have something specific in mind that you thought packed structures should be avoided for?
maguirre··on Dementia rates decline in U.S., researchers unsure why
Honest question. Where did you learn that saturated fats are important for brain function?
maguirre··on A Tribute to VMware Workstation, Fusion, and Hosted UI
This is a shame. I go back and forth between Virtual Box and Workstation. However Virtual Box's external USB device support works only 50% of the time for me. Does anyone here have suggestions for someone running Windows and Virtualizing Windows and Linux ?
maguirre··on Over 50, Female and Jobless
could it be because, in their eyes, she showed lack of commitment to her job?

It feels awful just thinking it in those terms but I can see how that can be used against parents that decide to stay home to take care of their children

maguirre··on %*$*#&#* Windows 7 Calculator
Absolutely! love this calculator miles ahead of anything Windows has ever offered
maguirre··on Why Obama did not stop NSA domestic surveillance
After reading the book: Confidence Men: Wall Street, Washington, and the Education of a President. I truly believe that the president (and maybe more so this president) is simply a figure head. Being surrounded by people of strong character he's been unable to be a commander and instead became someone with nice rhetoric.
maguirre··on Using the KVM API
I have been considering a subscription to lwn.net. I am a kernel-enthusiast (not quite a kernel hacker).

I see articles from there linked to HN fairly regularly but can anyone here shed a light on the quality of articles?

maguirre··on Porting Linux to a new processor architecture, Part 2
For those that didn't see the first part https://lwn.net/Articles/654783/
maguirre··on CoAP – Constrained Application Protocol
I have been used this protocol for with my 6LowPan. it adds reliability to UDP without a lot of the overhead of TCP, this becomes incredibly important in constrained devices. In addition, the fact that google appears to be using it in THREAD could give its utilization a boost.
maguirre··on Understanding ETF “Flash Crashes”
I would guess that this specific advice would be for those who already own the securities currently being sold at 50% "discount".
maguirre··on More Range in Chevy's Volt Means You Hardly Ever Need Gas
I don't understand the rationale of your comments. An electric only car would need a larger (heavier) battery for a longer range too, is that also wasteful in your view?. We need technologies like these to fill the gap until we can depend solely on batteries
maguirre··on Ask HN: Remote Working
I've been doing it for 4 years now and I absolutely love it! but please be mindful of your self. Find out what triggers you to get distracted and remove it as quickly as it happens. Personally I try to keep a work and a play computer.
maguirre··on China's Stock Market Pain Is India’s Financial Gain
What gives you so much confidence in the Chinese economy? what's the reason for such a strong conviction?
maguirre··on Excel_to_code – Converts some Excel spreadsheets to C
unrelated but you should see the generated code that matlab/simulink outputs from their Realtime workshop. This reminds of that
maguirre··on Can China Be Contained?
I don't know if you realize it or maybe the sarcasm is lost in this medium. However many of the things you just said about China, with the exception of being an authoritarian government, could also be said about the US.
maguirre··on The Difference Between Saying 'Thank You' in Chinese and English
Even after living un the US (midwest) for over ten years I still find myself not shaking people's hands when saying Hello & goodbye
maguirre··on Two commutes with Rust
There’s no ternary operators, but instead everything is an expression, so you just put an if statement in the middle of your expression like : a = if b > 1 { 1 } else { 2 }.

I don't understand this takeaway. Did the author forget a word?

maguirre··on Asmttpd – Web server for Linux written in amd64 assembly
Out of curiosity What would you have done for strings?
maguirre··on Sniffing GSM Traffic with HackRF
This is specifically my point of view, but I'd be willing to bet people keep doing this because they are curious, to see if they can or just because they want to expand their technical abilities.
maguirre··on Free mobile voice, text and data plans coming to UK
Freedom Pop, ugh my experience with them has been one of bait and switch. I bought a hotspot from them and I ended up canceling a couple of months after that due to unauthorized charges and suspicious account upgrades. To add insult to injury you have to call them to cancel your account something that took me hours to finalize. The one bright spot is that their customer service do not contest at requests to drop fees/charges it must be a common request from customers
