magikaram··on EV startups from Lucid to Rivian see demand fade, supply chain issues linger
I'd say that is dealer specific, I purchased a new Impreza in September of 2021, my specific trim and options weren't on the lot, and was easily given a factory order.

Got a '22 Impreza Sport Hatchback with no hassle, would easily recommend this dealer again. Seems to be the case on the Impreza forum too, as most owners are buying factory orders from the dealers, with a few saying that the dealer only sells Imprezas thru custom orders.

As for other models, that may be different. My family had no issue with getting a Forester.

magikaram··on Steam Deck: First Anniversary
I didn't think I'd use it a load when I pre-ordered mine, but I figured it would be great for use when I went to my girlfriend's home, or to visit my own family, and not lug a laptop or PC.

Boy I was wrong, I've used it in bed, on planes, couch, and over lunch. Heck, I even convinced my girlfriend to buy one so she could play games with me, and we not worry about Linux/windows compatibility between our computers, let alone this being her first gaming 'computer' to begin with.

magikaram··on Ask HN: What are some of your favorite YouTube channels?

magikaram··on The Copyright Clause Restoration Act [pdf]
In case anyone doesn't know, there is only one company that this law would apply to - Disney. No other copyright would be shorted. It is the only company with the classification and market cap that is stated in the bill.

I think the copyright law does need to be revised. But making it apply to only Disney, as Hawley is intending, doesn't fix the system. Just makes another problem to sort when it will need to be fixed.

magikaram··on Florida bans ranked-choice voting in new elections law
I would like to point out that it does vote against 'the popular vote' as both Bush jr. and Trump were elected without the popular vote (though during Bush's second bid for president he won the popular vote by less than 3%) [a]

magikaram··on U.S. eliminates human controls requirement for fully automated vehicles
Yet for many people, where they live isnt a choice, or their method of transport. Most of the US undeniably has poor public transport, and the only realistic means of travel for a day to day work schedule is via automobile.
magikaram··on What Does 'No First Use' Mean? A Nuclear Glossary
The Atlantic may have editorialized the title of the article. Introductory paragraph between the two are the same.
magikaram··on Subaru, Kia shut off some car features rather than adhere to 'right to repair'
Not parent, but thank you for sharing this, as is quite the read.
magikaram··on Subaru, Kia shut off some car features rather than adhere to 'right to repair'
I have a '22 Impreza, with a 5speed and the only internet connected thing is the headunit. However the headunit does communicate with the rest of the car for say: tpms, oil level, and for maintenance. While I surely would love to have full access to the data, since the car is extremely analog, it takes minimal maintenance and maximum fun, I haven't been too worried. Otherwise, the telemetrics I would vastly prefer to see opened to the public.
magikaram··on Subaru, Kia shut off some car features rather than adhere to 'right to repair'
Before OBD2, you were at odds with diagnostic software to troubleshoot vehicular problems. Mechanics, third parties, and owners could not use the onboard computers to resolve issues with the car, or emissions.

OBD2 as is required by the NHTSA, enables anyone with a scanner to view the diagnostic information, as well as the state of variables on a running engine. Say what you will about electric cars, but any vehicle with a standard diagnostic port is easily able to be worked on.

With modern telematics, and datapoints that the manufacturers have been able to record, giving the ability to access thay information to third party repair and the customers, you can have more choice, and get this, ability to have repairs done.

Dealers are not anywhere near always the best place to get a car repaired. In 10 years time, when the new cars age, they will need repair and maintenance that the dealer may overcharge for. If I had to service both of ny cars at the dealership, oil changes would cost me 3 times as much as I can do myself, brakes cost 2 times as much as a local shop can perform. Dealers don't provide a greater service to a vehicle than a standard mechanic shop can provide other than verified manufacturer parts at markup.

magikaram··on The remake of 'Shadow of the Colossus': A technical perspective (2019) [video]
I don't know if it's nostalgia, but I don't recall having performance issues. The graphics were definitely pushing the console to its limits, and I can easily see it dropping frames.
magikaram··on The remake of 'Shadow of the Colossus': A technical perspective (2019) [video]
I love this game, I still play it on the original hardware, a still functioning Fat PS2. Beautiful game, and honestly deserves a play from all, whether that be through an emulator or a remake.

The soundtrack is also one of the best pieces that I've gotten on my iPod.

I can't stop peaking praise for Shadow of the Colossus.

magikaram··on Missouri governor’s office responsible for teacher data leak
As a Missourian, and former Education sector employee, the handling of the situation shoes how terrible Parson is as a governor, and how even after the past two scandals, whether it be the opposing candidate, no one will pull him out of office.
magikaram··on Worldle
Not parent but, my girlfriend sent it to me after I sent her wordle a while back.

So far, after the past two days I've played, I got both countries on the first try. I love geography and history, and this has been a fun game while I wait for unit tests.

magikaram··on Americans are retiring to Vietnam, for healthcare and standard of living (2019)
As someone who has friends and family in Georgia and Armenia, I imagine moving to the region during retirement, or in an odd number of years.

I was born in the US, and only have the knowledge from existing family and friends, as well as trips to the country.

magikaram··on Every employee who leaves Apple becomes an ‘associate’
Pretty funny.
magikaram··on When Did Sex Become Fun? (2016)
Circumcision is a form of genital mutilation. Societies have done it in the past and present. Many societies have outlawed or otherwise restricted female gential mutilation, why can the same not be done for males in the same Developed world?
magikaram··on Why Galesburg has no money
It's been well documented that the large set back front yards and loads of anti-pedestrian designed neighborhoods and towns have largely been the cause for issues relating to poor public transportation, heat island effects, and less affordable housing.

You can have nice gardens, double parking spots & a garage without the same designed towns and neighborhoods. Most often is done by limiting street parking, narrower streets, and using the rear-entrance drives and lots as done in many cities.

Those designs also enable more pedestrian friendliness vs. the suburban sprawl that is effectively carpeting the U.S. and Canada since the 40's.

magikaram··on Welcome to the land that no country wants: Bir Tawil (2016)
Potential U.S. claim if oil is found.
magikaram··on End of the line finally coming for BlackBerry devices
I work for an ISP, and when we provision land lines, its a sort of handshake between the device and our network. Due to older dumbphones provisioning requiring minimal effort, it seems that they don't require the same tools. BlackBerry devices however are running a full-fledged OS that requires support. Since the affected devices are at latest from 2013, it seems reasonable that most of those affected have moved off of said devices.
magikaram··on Reporter may be prosecuted for using “view source”
Parson wasn't an elected governor initially. He was the Lt. Governor from an appointed position previous election cycle. Governor and Vice Governor resigned due to a scandal, and Parson took office similar to how Ford did after Nixon. Parson did win 're-election' riding on former President Trump's coattails.
magikaram··on Reporter may be prosecuted for using “view source”
Alas, yet another article that displays the incompetence of my state's governing body.
magikaram··on Idiocracy: A disturbingly prophetic look at the future
I even forgot about the corporate wokeism that is placated towards consumers for their 'one month a year gay pride twitter image', then not upholding the same morals year-round
magikaram··on Idiocracy: A disturbingly prophetic look at the future
"The underlying message of course is that humans ought to take such things as science, research and knowledge seriously, lest we create our own Idiocracy."

Rather, I felt the underlying message of the film is that the film is a critique of the consumerism and corporatism of the US. The 'idiocracy' with how the government runs, the downward trend of education in the US, and the pessimistic views of our future.

magikaram··on Papers We Love

magikaram··on MacBook Pro 2021 Review: Nearly Perfect Back-to-the-Future Laptops
I currently split my time on a 2018 Dell XPS, 2018 Dell Precision, and a 2015 MacBook Pro.

The return to form on these new MacBooks has been refreshing - however, due to a lack of modularity on storage I believe I'll refrain from upgrading. Of all components, storage is guaranteed to wear out over time, and in terms of longevity, I'd like to not be forced for purchasing essentially a whole computer to simply replace storage.

For others who don't find this necessary in decision making, then I'd recommend investigating what would happen in the case of data loss on your devices.

magikaram··on “Dune” (The Movie), Annotated
Time to read the books before the next part.
magikaram··on Brave, the false sensation of privacy
The other great thing is, in case you wanted to support Mozilla, the MozillaVPN is using Mullvad's service, and routinely provides great service. I will add though, if you're a huge privacy advocate, and don't want to supply your email or card details to Mozilla but want to use a VPN, Mullvad directly is still the best choice imo.
