It’s a rigged game. As long as they are aware, they won’t be disappointed
mads··on Xi Jinping personally halted Ant's IPO after Jack Ma snubbed government leaders
> or maybe the fact religion has been the main drivers for a whole bunch of wars?

More likely that they consider religion a powerful fictional structure competing with their own fictional structure. No natural law dictates that either of them should dominate, so they chose to suppress the competition.

I think loss of face is a very misunderstood concept.

When is the last time you as a westerner, which I assume you are, bragged to your friends about losing face that time you slipped on a banana peel?

You say "tech" industry. Surely you mean "advertising" industry.

mads··on Reddit app got 50M downloads by making mobile web experience miserable
And lost at least one user. I mostly stopped going to Reddit because of the miserable mobile experience, which is how I would normally consume the content there.
mads··on Don't close your MacBook with a cover over the camera
Most of the time, I have an external monitor connected to the laptop (with the laptop still open) and I usually wont notice if the camera is on just by looking at the LED.
mads··on After 10 years in tech isolation, I’m now outsider to things I once had mastered
So what is it that determines whether you end up on the black hat route? Is it an inherent flaw within or external circumstances?

Thank you for this idea. I will do this when my daughter is old enough to appreciate the adventure.

mads··on We Chat, They Watch
I dont believe anyone here is cheering much for any companies based in the advertising capital of the world.
mads··on We Chat, They Watch
It is no coincidence, when Chinese companies decide to invest in western culture (and subsequently decide you cannot flash certain flags, show certain teddy bears or express your opinion on whether you think a city should be free or not), buy a hotel near a naval base or push cheap network equipment.

The doctrine is commonly known as 3 warfares and was drawn up by officers in the Chinese military in the beginning of the 90'ies. The success of the officers behind the strategy have since moved on to become high ranking military officials, which should give you an idea about how their work was received within the Chinese government.

Looking for classic cold war patterns is not going work with China.

mads··on Show HN: Caddy 2
I am using Caddy v2 in a Nomad cluster to serve static pages. Works great. Time to upgrade to the final v2. Thanks for a great piece of software.
mads··on Finland adds the demoscene as a UNESCO intangible world cultural heritage
I was at that party in Falster in 1990. I remember we rented a video camera in a local hifi shop and documented the whole thing. The tape has unfortunately been lost as far as I know. Could be fun to watch it again. Do have some photos and possibly the original invitation lying around somewhere.
mads··on U.S. Government official: Coronavirus vaccine trial starts Monday
The Dengvaxia controversy, Dengvaxia issue, or Dengvaxia mess is an ongoing controversy about the use of anti-dengue vaccine Dengvaxia in the Philippines. In late November 2017, the Department of Health suspended a school-based vaccination program utilizing French drug-based vaccine maker Sanofi Pasteur's Dengvaxia vaccine because reports circulated that several children died from various complications allegedly attributed to the dengue vaccine.

mads··on Heliogen, backed by Gates, says it has achieved a solar breakthrough
Just barely enough so it can make it into the marketing material without seeming like a total scam.
mads··on How Microbiomes Affect Fear
For me, it helps to cut out sugar. I cannot say that I suddenly feel like a new person or anything after a while without sugar, but there is definitely a lift of my my baseline mental stamina, when it comes to handling everyday situations.

Sleep also improves without sugar. That may be the cause also.

mads··on Alcohol and social bonding in humans (2018)
Yeah, I feel like I have to justify why I am not participating in "doing drugs", when people wonder why I wont have a drink. Very tiring and kind of helped me to avoid drinking just out of spite :P ..

That weird "must be something wrong with you" attitude is pretty unique to alcohol, I would say.

mads··on Alcohol and social bonding in humans (2018)
I dont know..

Personally I dont really enjoy talking to other people. People used to tell me to join the gym to meet people, get out for a coffee and a drink and all that stuff, so I did, but truth is that I dont really enjoy it. I think it is a hassle and boring to talk to people. Sorry..

I used to think there was something wrong with me, since I had such a hard time fitting in, but then I realized that I am just different and I dont need all that socializing. Life got much better after that realization.

I used to like drinking also for the sake of getting drunk, but that urge faded also for some reason. The socializing made me want to drink probably.

mads··on Nordic Quack (2009)
I watched it on all the Nordic channels, when I was a kid. Couldn't get enough cartoon back then apparently. when it wasn't an abundant "commodity" like today.
mads··on Why Creativity Is a Numbers Game (2015)
Which is also why creativity suffers in totalitarian regimes like China. One or two of those ideas are bound to step on the toes of the establishment, but they need to be explored as part of the process.
