mads··on Male and female brains differ at birth
This cant really be a surprise, can it?
mads··on Musk Vaulted to the Top of Diablo IV. Everyone's Asking Where He Found the Time
K-Hole insomnia, I would assume: https://www.reuters.com/business/healthcare-pharmaceuticals/...
mads··on Ask HN: What is Elon Musk's world view?
The man is a drug addict, so I dont think you can expect much coherence there. Clearly demonstrated also by that guy also who analyzed his tweets, who could even extract data like the downward tolerance spiral musk was in.
mads··on Trump refuses to rule out using military force to take Greenland, Panama Canal
Thats like threatening to use military force in the great bakeoff.
mads··on Trump declines to rule out using military to control Greenland, Panama Canal
That convicted drug dealer or smuggler Greenland guy with the maga cap in the video he shared encapsulates this very well.
mads··on "AI" on a Calculator (2023)
I remember having the 1541 disk drive for my C64 play tunes.
mads··on Tesla reports 1.1% sales drop for 2024, first annual decline in at least 9 years
That truck always reminds me of that Simpsons episode, where Homer designs a car.
mads··on Tesla reports 1.1% sales drop for 2024, first annual decline in at least 9 years
"price of butter"
mads··on Single cigarette takes 20 minutes off life expectancy, study finds
Red meat does make you fart more though. I cant imagine thats healthy for people around you.
mads··on Is Iceland getting ready to join the EU?
So Barcelona homelessness is going up and Los Angeles homelessness is going down? The only reasonable conclusion must be that the homeless are relocating from Los Angeles to Barcelona. It is only a question of time then.
mads··on I am starting an AI+Education company
I am getting Jehovah's Witness vibes from it.
mads··on How do jewellers capture every last particle of gold dust? (2017)
There is a US ton? My God...

Just managed to login. Had one person on my contact list and he is dead...

mads··on How do computers calculate sine?
Back in the 80's, when I made demos on the C64, we also used pre-calculated sines. I remember going to the library to get a book with the values.
mads··on The curious case of hybrids in watchmaking
I have one of those Ulysses Nardin phones in a drawer somewhere as I was working on the software part of it back in the days.

The mechanical charging mechanism on the phone was basically a gimmick. You would probably have to shake it around for a few days to get the phone to even start again, if your oligarch plane crashed in the desert and your phone ran out of power.

mads··on A ghost town of abandoned mansions in China
The problem here is that you have provincial level leaders with a 7th grade education who are dictated to up their GDP to a certain number. They know that building something will do the trick and at the same time prop up their personal unofficial finances via bribes and whatnot. So it continues...
mads··on Simula – The forgotten programming language
Denmark had the mosts c64 groups in the world (the reason for this, I don't know) compared to population size. Most of the people involved with these demo/cracking groups in the 80ies were most likely in their teens. Once the 90ies arrived with the internet, I think it was obvious to most of them what they wanted to do with their life.

Sweden, Norway and Finland came in 2nd, 3rd and 4th. I think US was at place 20.

mads··on The creative sweet spot of dreaming
I have the same and I quite like it, when it happens. Very rarely am I able to "catch" the dream and somehow become semi conscious inside it in brief flashes. When this happens, I am not exactly able to control anything, but I can sort of observe things with my "normal" state of mind. Its really difficult to explain with words though.

As you also describe, this usually happens, when I am sleep deprived.

mads··on Twitterrific has been discontinued
Well, if he was promised 100% sunshine, he might.
mads··on Common Sweetener Linked with Anxiety in Startling New Research
I have for some time suspected that I was somehow sensitive to artificial sweeteners, so I have largely stopped consuming them. I don't have a good description of what happens, but something is off either the next day or the day after, if I drink a large bottle of Pepsi Max for example.
mads··on The Making of Dr. Strangelove (2013) [video]
You are right. I personally enjoyed the quote "No fighting in the war room".
mads··on Mark Zuckerberg confirms broad layoffs to begin at Meta
Funny you should say this. I often had this feeling that those interviews favor a certain kind of personality somehow.
mads··on What were you doing before learning to code?
Playing with lego.
mads··on PwshPaint: A pixel art editor for the terminal in PowerShell
I also just started using PowerShell around three years ago, when I started working in a Windows only environment. In the beginning I went through the whole circus with Cygwin, WSL, natively ported apps, etc. In the end I just decided to embrace PowerShell and it's really not bad. I quite like the object-oriented part of it.

I just installed PowerShell 7 last week to work on some scripts that required this, and I am hoping that some of the quirks of PowerShell have been solved in this version.

mads··on Our conscious experience of the world is a memory, says new theory
I have often thought that conscience must somehow be an artifact of the way our memory works without being able to describe it further.
mads··on Netflix lays off 300 additional staff
My credit card expired last month and I forgot to update Netflix with the new one. They remind me every time I open Netflix, but I haven't bothered to update it, since there is nothing I really want to watch myself, but mostly because nobody in my family has complained yet.
mads··on GitHub Actions was having an outage
Could he mean "docker push"? I never heard of any publish command.
mads··on The Xinjiang Police Files
Apparently a lot of people are suddenly experts on this guy Zenz. There appears to be sort of campaign going on in various places (like here on HN) to throw dirt at him.
mads··on Where are the low level system engineers?
In 30 years, I have moved all the way from the bottom of the stack doing assembly to the top, where I now do deployment pipelines and other DevOps related tasks.
