mads··on What Does Evergrande Meltdown Mean for China?
Most of the apartments I lived in in china have been absolute garbage. In shenzhen - most were probably not more than 10 years old. I even had to go the hospital once because my hand went through the glass of the bathroom door, when I tried to push it open.

Meanwhile my current home outside china is almost 100 years old and not garbage.

mads··on Those who witnessed Castle Bravo looked into Armageddon
During ABC (nuclear, biological, chemical) survival training in the army we were taught to dust off the snowflakes off each other as often as possible to maximize survival until the radiation zone could be left. I got the impression it was survivable for some amount of time.
mads··on New EU Law Removes Digital Privacy
I am not aware that gang violence should be a particular big problem here. Especially not such that it should require mass surveillance....
mads··on The mermaid is taking over Google search in Norway
They are using different images. A month or so ago it was some guy tied up on a chair with some russian text on top of the image.

There are a lot of these domains (ptsdforum.dk, verdes.dk, momentsbykruuse.dk from the top of my mind). Always Danish domains and always registered by the same person in Riga.

mads··on Plane Food Simulator 2021
Sounds like tomato juice manufacturers should calibrate their juice to taste like you're 30.000 feet up.
mads··on A Chemical Hunger: Mysteries
There is something I dont understand about this. Is it really true that carb consumption has gone down? My own anecdotal experience is that people are drinking way more sodas and eating way more candy than they used to (in 70/80'ies my childhood).

Like where I live now every other street corner has those "mix-your-own candy bag" shops, where you pay by the 100g. There must be someone buying that stuff, since they keep popping up.

mads··on Qualcomm Just Released a $1,500 Smartphone for Some Reason
Isn't this just another reference device?
mads··on Underground fiber optics spy on humans moving above
Clearly you havent watched many Hollywood movies.
mads··on How ancient people fell in love with bread, beer and other carbs
Its gotten so bad, I would pay to use HN.

I would say that compared to a news paper subscription for example, the mental stimulus provided by HN is far greater.

mads··on Taleb: Bitcoin, Currencies, and Bubbles

mads··on HK's Apple Daily raided by 500 officers over national security law
I dont get it. What is racist about it?
mads··on China accused of seizing Uighurs who fled abroad
At least those atrocities are out in the open.
mads··on National Geographic now recognizes The Southern Ocean
Where I come from, there are seven oceans. Pacific and Atlantic are divided by the belt of calms into northern and southern parts.
mads··on Anom Encrypted App Analysis
How do you know?
mads··on Mystery Pineapple in an Ancient Mosaic
You wait for them to open and eat the seeds or nuts as some people call them. These particular pinecones dont grow in the north, so they are supposed to be some sort of delicacy.

There is a video of a family collecting and preparing them here on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qH4nSgEIVKo

mads··on Mystery Pineapple in an Ancient Mosaic
We can buy pine cones here in the supermarket at certain times of year (in Scandinavia).

They are usually around pear size.

mads··on Are Xiaomi browsers spyware? Yes, they are (2020)
Yes, I think everyone got the memo about American companies. Thanks though..
mads··on Running Nomad for a Home Server
We used Nomad on Windows with the raw exec driver to schedule services on a project I worked on a year back. It worked great. Two binaries on each host along with a configuration file (for Nomad and Consul) and you are up and running.

Since then I have been a fan. Also worked a lot with Kubernetes, which has its merits, but the simplicity of Nomad is great.

mads··on Show HN: ustaxes.org – open-source tax filing webapp
I think the Danish tax authorities must have taken some sort of customer service course in recent years. They are always so friendly, when I call them, that I think there must be some scam going on.
mads··on How .NET container images are maintained
I will tell corporate I am Portugese.
mads··on Ask HN: Why has the internet become so pessimistic and political?
I wonder how the description of "Hacker News" would have sounded in that memo.
mads··on Buildpacks vs. Dockerfiles
I think there is rarely a reason to choose this over just a standard Dockerfile, which is usually not that complicated and probably wont change much over time once it has been implemented.

If generating Dockerfiles needs to be scaled up somehow, I can understand why this would be useful. Sounds exactly like a problem someone like Heroku would have.

mads··on Ask HN: What is your “I don't care if this succeeds” project?
I have been interested in this for a long time and also had a small setup in my apartment. I have been interested in getting back into this lately. What kind of mini farm setup do you have there? How big?
mads··on Creating my awesome Windows 10 dev setup
I have moved away from Linux. As much as I really want to use it, I always end up doing ... Linux ... as opposed to any real work.

Just last week, I moved my laptop back to Windows from Ubuntu because it froze up on me at least a couple of times a day (and that is a XPS13 - a system which is supposedly built to run Linux).

I have been using Linux since kernel version 0.99 or something, so its not like I dont know my way around it. I just dont really care which OS I run. It just needs to get out of the way and work for me and not against me. Windows does a good enough job at that.

mads··on Emails a browser extension developer gets from scammers
I believe the "scammer" parts comes from them wanting to leech data off the users of the given extensions. They are upfront about their intentions, I think, so scammer is maybe not the appropriate term. "Scummer" maybe.
mads··on Gary Taubes: 'Obesity isn’t a calorie problem, it’s a hormone problem'
I am neither a journalist or a scientist, but experiments done on my own body for the last 20 years (body hacking, you could call it) has led me to conclude pretty much the same thing as described in this article. I.e. it works on my own body - I dont know what works for others.
mads··on Apple’s longtime supplier accused of using forced labor in China
it was also a time, where the hero in that movie could carry a Taiwanese flag on his back.

or a time where you would see Winnie the Pooh movies being made.

mads··on My daughter was a creative genius, and then we bought her an iPhone
I spent thousands of hours in front of my Vic20, C64, etc. Back then the platforms really encouraged creativity. Now I feel every single platform just encourages consumerism.
