m4tthumphrey··on Tesla owner arrested after riding in the back seat while it was on autopilot
> "It was actually designed to be ridden in the back seat," Sharma said.

Citation needed.

m4tthumphrey··on Ask HN: How to attract perm Snr Engs when the contract market is so lucrative?
> 5. Raises that matter. Not some 1 or 2 pct insult. There's no excuse for that. None.

This x100.

I don't understand why companies see this as acceptable, especially when market rates might be so much higher.

m4tthumphrey··on Meat consumption and risk of 25 conditions: outcome-wide analyses of 475K people
So... don't eat processed meat. Doesn't this just correlate with what we already knew?
m4tthumphrey··on Beyond Meat signs global supply deals with McDonald’s, KFC and Pizza Hut
Its definitely the sauce and pickles etc, but for me the draw for McDonalds was the theatre and nostalgia from my childhood, mixed with the convenience. And of course, add in the fact that I used to have an extra hamburger and 10 McNuggets as standard made it all the more enticing!
m4tthumphrey··on Beyond Meat signs global supply deals with McDonald’s, KFC and Pizza Hut
I stopped eating meat in January 2018 and I can honestly say the only thing I miss is a Big Mac! This is VERY good news for me and a long overdue!

That being said, whilst I do love a Beyond burger, here in the UK, I was surprised to hear it was Beyond that McDonalds selected for this. While in Orlando 2 years ago, I tried an Impossible burger for the first time and it was incredible. The size, texture and taste would be perfect for McDonalds (Big Mac). Still, I will be all over this once it hits UK branches!

m4tthumphrey··on Pixar in a Box: the art of storytelling
This is exactly why I edited my comment and added "original" - the Cars sequels are definitely below par.
m4tthumphrey··on Pixar in a Box: the art of storytelling
I can't think of any original Pixar stories that were "not good at all". Brave is probably the only one I might put close to that category. Which ones would you include?

Edit: Added "original"; some of the sequels are not great

m4tthumphrey··on Clubhouse’s Inevitability
So I hadn't heard of Clubhouse before so I googled it. I didnt even click the link and Google told me;

> Clubhouse is an invitation-only audio-chat social networking app launched in 2020 by software developers Alpha Exploration Co. As of December 2020, it was valued at nearly $100 million. On January 21, 2021, the valuation hit one billion US dollars.

$100m to $1b value increase in a month? What happened?

m4tthumphrey··on Spotify is letting employees work from anywhere while paying SF and NY salaries
This is a definitely a polarising issue. Some devs prefer to come in to be social, some prefer the office environment and others prefer it at home for the flexibility or are just more productive at home (me included).
m4tthumphrey··on Spotify is letting employees work from anywhere while paying SF and NY salaries
£100k for web dev does not happen outside London in UK. Barely half that.
m4tthumphrey··on Spotify is letting employees work from anywhere while paying SF and NY salaries
Recruiting is proving insanely difficult right now. We are based just outside of London and have been offering "local remote" (1 day in week office generally) for about 4 years now. Candidates were always hard to attract (salary and office location) but offering remote work 4 days a week really helped. Now, that perk is now a norm so access to even remotely (no pun intended) skilled candidates is next to impossible.

m4tthumphrey··on That's not how 2FA works
Slightly OT: Odd timing but one of my services sent me a push notification earlier about setting up a "personalised code" which would be included in all emails. I thought this to be a novel way that could _help_ with the email phishing problem, if adopted and implemented properly.
m4tthumphrey··on Bumble S-1
Wow that is what I thought OP meant but I thought surely they don't spend that much on dating apps? I have nothing against meeting online, but paying that much to? Do people not meeting organically anymore, be it online or IRL?
m4tthumphrey··on Bumble S-1
> "personal marketing spend" of around 300-400$/mo

huh?

m4tthumphrey··on New MacBook Pro models to feature magsafe, no touch bar and more ports: analyst
Exactly what I was thinking. I have been seriously dreading the day my 2015 Pro finally gives up on me. This news couldn't have come at a better time, I just hope it's true!
m4tthumphrey··on The end arrives as Adobe starts blocking Flash content
There has been no announcement on that yet but I would guess (hope) that there is no kill switch as the time has now password and it still runs. The projects are still available to download too. I believe Adobe are keeping them up for enterprise users for debugging.
m4tthumphrey··on The end arrives as Adobe starts blocking Flash content
The limitation doesnt seem to involve communication with Adobe servers; its appears to be based solely on the machine time. I suspect that the Flash player on OPs machine has been connected to the internet and updated Flash Player at least once in the last 3 years.
m4tthumphrey··on The end arrives as Adobe starts blocking Flash content
You can use the projector [0] to run a SWF file outside of the browser.

Edit: Apologies, I misread the bit about the Flash requirement only being a part of the application. The above may still provide some use though?

m4tthumphrey··on Show HN: After 2.5 years on my side project, it has hit £500/month revenue
Theres many tools out there that will handle the follow up marketing part for you. Most will offer powerful workflow tools based on conditions etc.

m4tthumphrey··on I Ripped Out a £6k Lighting System
I have to say my experience with Hive has been nothing but exceptional. All the way from having it installed back in 2016 (when we moved in) to this day when it came on for an hour this morning. The controller is right next to the boiler in the eaves of my house and is connected via ethernet through a TP-Link TL-PA9020P powerline adaptor. In all fairness the thermostat is very close to the receiver, in the landing, so maybe that's why it's never been an issue. I don't think I've ever once had a single issue with using the app, whether that's from downstairs or from the other side of the Atlantic. It will be the first thing on the shopping list when/if we ever move.
m4tthumphrey··on Betfair still hasn't paid out its 2020 Presidential Election market
Pardon my ignorance but I just went to place a £2 bet (minimum) on Biden "Back All" at 1.07. Does that mean when Betfair DOES pay out, I will make a profit of 14p?

Surely not?

m4tthumphrey··on Founder Paydays at Exit (IPO)

m4tthumphrey··on Scrollbar Blindness
I loathe the fact that scrollbars are now hidden. I'm constantly looking for it to either

a) find out how big the page is b) scroll more precisely

I don't even understand why they would remove them? Who ever complained of a scroll bar?

m4tthumphrey··on Arwes – Futuristic Sci-Fi / Cyberpunk Graphical User Interface Framework
Ahh, I always enjoyed the Starwars and movie theatre designs. I can't seem to find them on the site right now though..

Edit: Here is the movie theatre! [0]
