m463··on Automating my 35mm film scanning pipeline
weird, my cursor disappears over that website.
m463··on Car is a smartphone on wheels. Here's who's listening
> If this tech was being used for traffic enforcement then I'm all for it.

that would create hell on earth.

The people whose job to do this are the police, and it should not be delegated in this dystopian way, let alone by your own possessions.

m463··on Car is a smartphone on wheels. Here's who's listening
for tesla insurance, yes. You have to agree for your driving to be monitored to use their insurance. They monitor and grade you based on a number of driving behaviors, then set your premium based on your score. You score determines the next month's premium. Note that the time you drive using tesla full-self-driving enabled, your score is 100% (even with the sometimes scary 12.x version)

You must agree to monitoring, otherwise they won't give you insurance.

m463··on Amazon introduces a redesigned Kindle family
probably, but just wondering because it was ~ 1 mile from amazon hq
m463··on Ban Flock Act Proposed in the US Sente
Wonder about states switching to automated per-mile vehicle taxation.
m463··on I quit OpenAI because its culture is broken
Trolley problem:

- if you allow the trolley to proceed, it will kill the human race.

- if you flip the switch, it will divert to a passing siding that will avoid the safety group blocking the main track.

m463··on What is going on with ceiling fans
I want more POE devices.

It might be that POE power supplies get hot - I've noticed the POE hats for the raspberry pi need a fan

m463··on Apple's "Clean Design" Is Stupidity When It Comes to Hiding Fire Extinguishers
Reminds me of tesla.

No turn signal stalks, instead rotating buttons on the steering wheel. No PRND stalks either. Critical controls hidden on touchscreen behind look-then-swipe nonsense.

Also funny is the same nonsense apple has done between mouse scroll wheel movement direction and "natural" touchpad direction. Tesla's old PRND stalk was down for forward, up for reverse. New cars have touchscreen only gear select, and it is UP for forward, DOWN for reverse.

m463··on Barcodes are about to go extinct
Hasn't there been a metoric rise of affordable california varietals?
m463··on There are only 5,000 elite software engineers in the world
"I want a 10x developer with 10 years of something-just-invented-last-year experience"
m463··on Updates to Full Disk Access in macOS
I would want terminal and all its subprocesses to have full disk access - I do tons of stuff from the command line and don't run nonsense stuff.

get out of my way.

m463··on Amazon introduces a redesigned Kindle family
In seattle there is a restaurant downtown called Ludi's that serves ube pancakes that are a giant purple pile of goodness.

I wonder if there's a connection?

m463··on With most information hidden, the game Stratego had stumped AI until now
> But, I eventually couldn't find anyone to play with me because I crushed everyone

I think this is a problem with many deeper games. I remember going over to other people's houses and they would pull out obscure-board-game-xyz. The rest of the night for me was trying to figure out how to play, while others were 30 steps ahead of me.

I think you need something like chess club - stratego club - where people have all gotten to the nuance level and you can play with people of appropriate level.

m463··on Everyone's Packing Up
funny - the vpn through work gives me lots of verification. At home I don't get that, but cloudflare/edgesuite does block me for browser/extensions I use.
m463··on Everyone's Packing Up
I've left a few sites.

I think the basic premise under there is still valid. Lots of online sites/communities/etc turn into rugpulls. Success leads to management change, then depersonalization, then monetization.

m463··on Apple is tightening macOS 'Full Disk Access' due to new risks from AI agents
I already struggle with terminal and scripts with full disk access, this will probably make it worse.

I suspect this reactive nonsense, is part of apple's plan to ios-ify macos.

m463··on Court agrees with EFF: Utah's VPN law demands a technical impossibility
I remember talking about voting fraud with an indian friend. He said it was more overt in india - a burly guy would grab your finger and make it press the "correct" voting machine button.
m463··on Git 3.0's upcoming SHA-256 default will be a costly mistake
didn't he create git in like a weekend?
m463··on Shimano Bicycle Museum Review
switched from SH51 single-release to SH56 multi-release and clipless became worlds better.

Also everyone should try di2.

m463··on Apple's smart home camera reportedly won't record video
not the same as collecting your data, especially with ads.
m463··on 2026 International Utility Locate Rodeo
Actually, sounds like total fun.

If they added studfinding into this and it would be more like divining rods and witchcraft.

(tried countless studfinders and wish there was one that gave a clear wall picture)

m463··on Automatic Transmission – a data-privacy study of connected vehicles
It is unclear what "vehicle-only ATA companies" means.

what is ATA? what do they collect?

EDIT: Advertiser/Tracker/Analytics

m463··on Apple's smart home camera reportedly won't record video
sound like they are trying.

Unfortunately apple devices collect EXTREME amounts of telemetry, you are opted-in by default, and much of it is impossible to opt-out of.

m463··on Returning from vacation? The government can search your phone without a warrant
This is probably true of everyone's phone. Most phones will have a comprehensive profile of who you are, where you live, where you frequent, who you associate with, and what you like to do. Along with specifics even you don't realize.
m463··on Automatic Transmission – a data-privacy study of connected vehicles
You can get tesla insurance and it monitors your driving.

If you do not agree to this monitoring, they will not insure you.

also, full self driving (or autosteer) both require the cabin camera to be enabled and to monitor you.

m463··on Cf: The Agentic CLI for the Cloudflare API
Cloudflare keeps denying my (human) browsing because of "incompatible browser extensions", and sites require javascript and cookies because of all their nonsense.

Please do not put cloudflare between your site and humans, they are not a trusted gatekeeper.

m463··on Ask HN: What are you reading?
litrpg - I've read lots of these, but can't recommend that many. Even better ones can't hold my interest until the end of the series. Some that weren't that bad: solo leveling (up to book ~6), the wandering inn (~11). I listened to dungeon crawler carl (~8 books) and he who fights with monsters (~8).

scifi - the murderbot diaries, old man's war.

m463··on Vermont replacing power plants with home batteries
I wonder what the cycling does to battery lifetime?
m463··on McDonald's push to have AI price your Big Mac
I see a burger arbitrage opportunity where you purchase a burger at in-n-out and deliver it to mcdonalds customers.
m463··on McDonald's Is Using AI to Dynamically Price Its Burgers
