m3adow··on What we talk about when we talk about sideloading
> This segment is what is preventing the “green bubbles = poor” narrative from taking over.

In the US maybe. In Europe, not so much. With Apple having a market share of "only" about one third and WhatsApp being the de facto default messaging app, this discussion never happened here.

Therefore your argument doesn't apply to Europe at all. Android is more than the "hacky" part. Albeit I'd really love to keep that.

m3adow··on German contest to live in depopulated Soviet-era city proves global hit
In these regions of Germany it has very little to do with that, as there's hardly any immigrants in Eastern Germany, except Berlin of course. It's about prejudice and xenophobia due to the unknown.
m3adow··on How much EU is in DNS4EU?
Never heard of them before, but they look interesting, thanks for that. I'll transfer one of my .eu.org domains for testing it out.
m3adow··on Ask HN: Cursor or Windsurf?
I'll try to elaborate:

I'm using VSC for most edits, tab-completion is done via Copilot, I don't use it that much though, as I find the prediction to be subpar or too wordy in case of commenting. I use Aider for rubber-ducking and implementing small to mid-scope changes. Normally, I add the required files, change to architect or ask mode (depends on the problem I want to solve), explain what my problem is and how I want it to be solved. If the Aider answer satisfies me, I change to coding mode and allow the changes.

No magic, I have no idea how a single prompt can generate $4. I wouldn't be surprised if I'm only scratching on the surface with my approach though, maybe there is a better but more costly strategy yielding better results which I just didn't realize yet.

m3adow··on Ask HN: Cursor or Windsurf?
Huh, I didn't configure anything for saving, honestly. I just add the whole repo and do my stuff. How do you get to $10/h? I probably couldn't even provoke this.

I assume we have a very different workflow.

m3adow··on Ask HN: Cursor or Windsurf?
I'm using Gemini 2.5 Pro with Aider and Cline for work. I'd say when working for 8 full hours without any meetings or other interruptions, I'd hit around $2. In practice, I average at $0.50 and hit $1 once in the last weeks.
m3adow··on Google Gemini has the worst LLM API
Yeah, not having clear time lines for new releases on the one hand, but being quick with deprecation of older models isn't a very good experience.
m3adow··on A single line of code cost $8000
First thing I thought as well. Every 5 minutes for a screen recording software is an absurd frequency. I doubt they release multiple new versions per day.
m3adow··on Lidl's Cloud Gambit: Europe's Shift to Sovereign Computing
That's only on paper though. I know a couple of people who founded a startup in the medicine sector on Telekom Cloud and most of their backend engineering work in the first years(!) went into circumventing Telekom Cloud issues like slow API, servers not starting or plainly disappearing.

Haven't talked to the guys for two years, so it might have improved in the meantime, but it's Telekom, so I heavily doubt it.

m3adow··on Fntastic announces shutdown four days after releasing "The Day Before"
Up until now they released:

- The Wild Eight (Metacritic: 63; Steam: "Mostly Positive" with 6,161 reviews)

- Dead Dozen (Metacritic: TBD; Steam: "Mostly Negative" with 579 reviews)

- Radiant One (Metacritic: 82; Steam: "Mostly Positive" with 166 reviews)

- Propnight (Metacritic: TBD; Steam: "Mixed" with >15,000 reviews)

- The Day Before (Metacritic: TBD; Steam: "Mostly Negative" with >19,000 reviews)

Scores don't look good, but they also don't look as bad as I expected them to be after the train wreck of The Day Before. I wonder how this would've played out if they hadn't overhyped the game as much as they did.

m3adow··on Germany Will Force 80% of Gas Stations to Install EV Charging, Too
This sounds like anecdotal evidence and I never heard this reason before. Do you have any sources supporting your claims?
m3adow··on Android 14 blocks all modification of system certificates, even as root?
> That was enough to get me to move to something where I am in control.

What smartphone OS are you referring to? Sounds interesting.

m3adow··on Show HN: Open-source obsidian.md sync server
Yeah, not sure what this guy is talking about. I'm syncing my notes with my Nextcloud using the FolderSync App on Android which I used for other stuff anyways. Works like a charm, never had any problems.

Obsidian is great, but I'm not paying over 90 bucks a year for a simple file syncing service I can build in less than an hour.

Maybe the publish feature is worth it, but I'm content with the ObsidianPublisher workflow I set up for now.

m3adow··on It Took Me a Decade to Find the Perfect Personal Website Stack – Ghost+Fathom
400€ per year on a personal blog? To each their own, I guess.

I host my blogs on GH pages or Netlify. Additionally, I dump the notes I want to share with the world on GH pages as well with the excellent Obsidian Github Publisher [0] Plugin. I don't really care about analytics for a personal blog though.

Works for me, and costs nothing.

m3adow··on PayPal has restricted our account after we invoiced a key containing “ALEP”
That's why I have no money in my PayPal account and the only payment method is a credit card which I get a notification for when it's charged. I don't trust PayPal at all, but sadly, it's the least bad payment option in big parts of the european online shopping sector.
m3adow··on Jami: Share, Message, Call freely and privately
If someone else thinks the logo looks familiar, it's because [Jami was previously named Ring](https://jami.net/ring-becomes-jami/) which I actually used years ago. Can't remember anything about it though.
m3adow··on Mona Sans and Hubot Sans
Cool tool, didn't know about this. Thank you!

I recommend to hide the font names to prevent any bias.

m3adow··on Spreadsheet Gaming
Not for me.
m3adow··on WireGuard Servers Running from RAM
PIA (Privateinternetaccess) had a similar case: https://torrentfreak.com/private-internet-access-no-logging-...

This was before they were bought by some shady company though, so I wouldn't rely on this policy being unchanged anymore.

m3adow··on My son has set the house up with a Pi-Hole
Try using nextdns. I set it up for my wife in her smartphone, as she didn't want to have it rooted. Works like a charm.

My phones are always rooted though, I want all the control I can get for my device.

m3adow··on Rufus: Microsoft is blocking Windows ISO downloads
Iirc there are add-ons for it, I'd calllp that easy. Also there's the about:config way but I guess this may be considered difficult.
m3adow··on Ask HN: How have you deGoogled your life?
I just blocked Internet access for it. Some minor functionality like GIF search is lost, but nothing serious.
m3adow··on Italian watchdog bans use of Google Analytics
Don't you still have to provide a cookie banner as soon as your analytics are storing cookies, even if it's your own?
m3adow··on Mirrord – mirror production traffic to your development environment
It's literally in the first sentence of the README:

> mirrord lets you easily mirror traffic from your Kubernetes cluster to your development environment.

That said, cool application, although I can see a lot of compliance and/or data protection problems when production data is leaving the (hopefully protected) production environment.

m3adow··on Using a catch-all domain is a mistake
Why not just use regex/wildcard addresses which makes it less "akward".

Like "mail-recruiter@foo.bar", "mail-hilton.com@foo.bar", etc.

It's easy to configure, makes it more clear that you are in fact not trying to impersonate others and you circumvent the problem of receiving automated mailes to "sales@foo.bar", "hr@foo.bar", etc.

BTW: I've been using my solution for more than five years and only had one "awkward" moment when a recruiter was a bit sore I gave them my mail address specific for cold call recruiters.

m3adow··on Knots 3D – Learn how to tie over 150 useful knots
Got it for free 5+ years ago, used it less than a dozen times. It's still one of the first apps I install on each device, the different knots are just so cool
m3adow··on Broadcom to acquire VMware for $61B
There's stuff like Openshift and Rancher as commercial Kubernetes distributions as well as a lot of Kubernetes "addons" like weave, portworx, etc. Monetisation of Kubernetes is totally possible.

Docker failed because they tried to compete with Kubernetes, lost and then didn't have a clue how to find a niche where they could enrich the Kubernetes ecosystem.

m3adow··on The Great Crypto Grift May Be Unwinding
I guess they meant that you can have a persistent and eternal database of the game state stored in a blockchain which everybody could host a game server with.
m3adow··on Things I can’t do on macOS which I can do on Ubuntu (2020)
Funny enough he's answering your complaints in the last paragraph. You're telling him he's "holding it wrong". Except individual taste can rarely be wrong.
m3adow··on LineageOS 19
Having the sandboxed Google Play services would be wonderful. I'm currently using LineageOS with microG and Aurora store, but quite a lot of apps do not properly run with microG. Having some kind of fallback alternative in a second user or even better a work profile would be great.
