lwhalen··on Red Hat resets CentOS Linux and users are angry
The BSDs are getting more and more appealing every quarter, personally. I've moved some personal/home services over to OpenBSD, the process was smooth and straightforward.
lwhalen··on Tech elites leaving San Francisco threaten Silicon Valley's supremacy
I am heading to a remote cabin (well, farm actually) in Montana. Just waiting for Starlink to go GA. I'm currently in the Seattle area though.

lwhalen··on Hiring for tech jobs has increased more than 100% in these Midwestern cities
Last time I checked, this country wasn't "to each according to their need". They wanted it, they could afford it, so they went out and got it :-)
lwhalen··on Seattle approves minimum wage for Uber and Lyft drivers
I wonder how long before these companies pull out of Seattle, or Washington entirely.

If it's just Seattle, will they just geofence the city and not allow rides to originate or terminate there? What happens if a driver is transiting the city limits, but isn't within for a full hour - does the minimum wage get prorated, or what?

lwhalen··on Ask HN: What are good life skills for people to learn?
Take a cue from Uncle Bob (Heinlein) and start working on his list:

A human being should be able to:

- conn a ship

- design a building

- write a sonnet

- balance accounts

- build a wall

- set a bone

- comfort the dying

- take orders

- give orders

- cooperate

- act alone

- solve equations

- analyze a new problem

- pitch manure

- program a computer

- cook a tasty meal

- fight efficiently

- die gallantly

lwhalen··on Origins of Venmo (2014)
I quit venmo when they went mobile only. There's no obvious way they make money, so it must be in the metadata they collect... somewhere. I can control what they see from a desktop web browser, but on mobile their app asks for far too much.
lwhalen··on Gimp is working on its own version of “smart objects”
Glad to hear the team is making progress. Slightly OT, might anyone here know what is up with the super-slow release of 2.10.20 installer for OS X? It's been several weeks since the latest release, and there's only the 2.10.14 installer available. I've done some poking around in the bug-tracker, but wasn't able to find an Issue for whatever might be holding up the OS X installer.
lwhalen··on Remote work is not necessarily a good thing for the worker
All of my agreements.
lwhalen··on I Know What You Download on BitTorrent
Lol, and how did that work out for you?
lwhalen··on Tesla drops Model Y price by $3k
BMW dealership did it for me after I signed a standard form that, yes, this is what I wanted. A friendly chat with the master mechanic gave me the rough location of the cell box (easy to get to in a convertible) and a 'wink wink nudge nudge' understanding that, while cutting that cable is absolutely not recommended, the car wouldn't spontaneously explode if it somehow became accidentally disconnected.
lwhalen··on Tesla drops Model Y price by $3k
Is there a way to disable all the Tesla telemetry, even if it means reduced functionality? I'd love a Model X, but I refuse to own a car that tracks my location and reports it back to the mothership. I'm so serious about this, I've disabled my BMW cell subscription (and cut the cable to the cell modem).
lwhalen··on Ask HN: Best ways to retain qualified employees?
Ever since the Phoenicians invented money, there has only ever been one answer to that question :-)
lwhalen··on Scientists move to strip offensive names from journals, prizes, and more
We can spend ~decades rooting out every potential English synonym that could potentially offend someone, or we could just start over with a 'clean', 'pure' language with none of that pesky baggage.

In my opinion, this entire exercise leads to the wholesale rejection of the English language by the self-appointed 'elite'. Get ahead of the curve now, learn to speak Lojban today. It even has 'ban' right in the title!

lwhalen··on The War on Upstart Fiber Internet Providers
This is what is preventing my move from suburban Washington State to rural Montana or even Idaho. Getting ANY information from wired ISPs is like pulling teeth. Each address has to be called in, and no ISP can say something helpful like "we don't service that, but try ISP X", they all say "that's not on our service area... today".

I have high hopes for Starlink, personally, but my first choice would absolutely be gigabit fiber to the homestead.

lwhalen··on Opinion: Case for removing master-slave terminology from music production tools
No. There is a finite amount of time and energy (physical, emotional, and other) that an individual, and by proxy a group, can dedicate to a given cause. Wasting those resources on token gestures like this means there is _less_ energy to go towards actions that will cause meaningful change. "Changing words because feels" is social self-gratification, and does nothing to address the actual societal ills.

If you want to see meaningful change, disregard this terminology frippery and call/write/email/whatever your local rep to support the tri-partisan bill revoking qualified immunity. I promise, you will see vastly more improvement in society if this bill goes through, than if we spin our wheels wondering if "foobar" is going to be the next doublePlusUngood(tm) term d'art of the week.

lwhalen··on Spotify signs ‘The Joe Rogan Experience’ to an exclusive multi-year deal
So all it takes to shortcut your "rational examination of the evidence at hand" loop is to have someone label a subject as 'a conspiracy'? That's certainly an interesting way to move through life.
lwhalen··on Ask HN: Best resources for non-technical founders to understand hacker mindset?
What's wrong with ESR's work? I know the man himself can sometimes be controversial, but many of us came up on his works like The Jargon File, Cathedral and Bazaar, etc.
lwhalen··on Show HN: Generate a static website from any back end
How does it play with Squarespace sites? I didn't see that mentioned as one of their supported back-ends.

lwhalen··on Man diagnosed with coronavirus near Seattle is being treated largely by a robot
Certainly. But humans are supposed to be responsible for their own outcome, more often than not. America is the land of opportunity. Many people who are otherwise more than able to work, choose to Trustifarian it up and be a pimple on the backside of society when they COULD choose to be productive members. I am perfectly happy to pay taxes and lend a hand up. It's when I'm obligated to give a hand-out that I get cranky.
lwhalen··on Man diagnosed with coronavirus near Seattle is being treated largely by a robot
Food-stamp recipients and folks on social security are completely different classes of citizen. Firstly, we expect the food-stamp recipient to eventually get off of them and start providing for themselves. The social security recipient has paid into the system their entire life, and they are now entitled - by virtue of having lived long enough and paid enough in - to start withdrawing the money they've been coerced into depositing.

Interestingly enough, most economic studies of social security show that putting the same money into a low-risk index fund would've netted more gains, plus that money would've been available to the person with far fewer 'strings attached' (vis a vis able to be withdrawn earlier if desired, descendants/spouses able to withdraw in case of untimely demise, etc). Coerced gov't meddling, again, has proven to be the more-painful economic road to go down, as opposed to letting individuals choose what to do with what they've earned.

lwhalen··on Man diagnosed with coronavirus near Seattle is being treated largely by a robot
Indeed, and do you know what kills you faster and more reliably than lack of free/subsidized medical care?

Lack of food (9 days), and lack of potable water (72 hours). Since we seem to be leaning towards the opinion that the gov't needs to provide everything for us and we should have minimal/no responsiblity for our own sustenance, repair, or longevity, where's the Free Sh*t Army slogans for no-cost food and water?

lwhalen··on Glacier National Park to remove all 'glaciers will be gone by 2020' signs
I mean, so is Pascal's Wager. I'm no climate scientist, but from what little I've read is that _all_ climate models are terrible at predicting more than 10-20 days out, and are on the same level of accuracy as financial forecasting models (i.e., 'not at all'). In my vast and inky ignorance, I'm just not convinced we need to _drastically revamp the entire economy soup to nuts_ in order to satisfy predictions from inaccurate models populated with bad (or at least 'wildly variable') data.
lwhalen··on Glacier National Park to remove all 'glaciers will be gone by 2020' signs
It's not nearly as clear-cut as one might hope. Cliff Mass, a respected University of Washington Professor of Atmospheric Sciences, is a noted 'skeptic' of the urgency of climate change, at least the anthropogenic causes thereof. I've heard of others, but he's the one that comes closest to mind.
lwhalen··on U-Haul to Implement Nicotine-Free Hiring Policy
If voting changed anything, we wouldn't be allowed to do it.
lwhalen··on U-Haul to Implement Nicotine-Free Hiring Policy
And once we're all on mandatory government healthcare, how does that reduce the incentive for the government to dictate the exact same policies (vis a vis 'penalizing the smokers, the overweight, the gun-owners, the non-conforming') under the guise of "Well it's cheaper if we do it..."

Bonus, there's even MORE motive (of the 'means, motive, opportunity' triangle) for them to continue turning the surveillance state against ordinary folks to find out "who's actually smoking and lying about it to their doctor?"
