lwansbrough··on California farmers are struggling to sell grapes as demand for wine drops
Some would argue those are all connected.

lwansbrough··on California farmers are struggling to sell grapes as demand for wine drops
About Here did a good video on what they think the "problem" is with Gen Z (hint: they're a product of the environment they have inherited)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EmLO69c_fyw

I'm using night life as a stand in for drinking, but I think it's closely related.

lwansbrough··on Updated Google Maps shows destruction of the city of Rafah
What's this got to do with Israel razing a neighbouring city?
lwansbrough··on Updated Google Maps shows destruction of the city of Rafah
In what sense is the forced, systematic removal of people from this area based on religious grounds "factually groundless"?

They don't live there anymore, they're displaced.

lwansbrough··on Updated Google Maps shows destruction of the city of Rafah
Ethnic cleansing, then. But this is exactly the sort of thing I'm talking about - very typical of Israel supporters: they debate you on the letter instead of acknowledging that what we see here is horrendous.

Then they suggest that this is justified because Israel is a jewish ethnostate.

lwansbrough··on GPT-6 Sol and Luna
Just what I was hoping for, very nice. Luna seems like a real replacement for DeepSeek on pricing. Haven't seen a comparison benchmark yet.
lwansbrough··on MiMo v2.6
I agree but I like to take the time to remind the Americans how far they’ve fallen.
lwansbrough··on MiMo v2.6
Because at present the pedophile US president is making it his mission to molest my country. China, for all its faults (including espionage, which the US is also guilty of) is mostly focused on conducting trade.
lwansbrough··on MiMo v2.6
I'm Canadian so this sentiment has little value in 2026 unfortunately.
lwansbrough··on MiMo v2.6
Anyone else more excited about Chinese models than American models these days? Big thing for me is affordability.
lwansbrough··on I turned Jev into a (lousy) chatbot
Try returning a short list of word options by lookup based on the current word completion. Would save some turns.
lwansbrough··on English: A vs. An
I was going to start by stating the difference is “a” is unspecific, “the” implies the subject is already known.

However as I thought more about it I realized it gets a little more complicated. I’m not academically studied in English, though I am a native speaker.

For example if you say, “Our town has a castle” - that’s a specific castle but you wouldn’t say “our town has the castle.”

Why? It has to do with what the listener knows. “Definite” means the subject is known to the listener. If I’m introducing a castle into the conversation that you don’t know, I’m talking about _a_ castle. Now that it’s introduced, I can tell you about _the_ castle.

lwansbrough··on Introducing System One Models and Jev
For what it’s worth, I didn’t get that impression, and even noticed a couple typos ;)
lwansbrough··on Anthropic boss Dario Amodei calls for AI development to slow down
Death cult.
lwansbrough··on Anthropic boss Dario Amodei calls for AI development to slow down
That's not the type of alignment I'm talking about. I'm talking about: I spin up 1 million agents, will they start doing felonies knowingly?
lwansbrough··on Anthropic boss Dario Amodei calls for AI development to slow down
This is good. Frontier labs should collaborate on alignment until we get it right.
lwansbrough··on DeepSeek v4.1 Flash
Was looking at OpenRouter, I guess it’s wrong.
lwansbrough··on DeepSeek v4.1 Flash
Significant jump in pricing. V4 Flash was $0.16/M out, 4.1 is $1.20/M.
lwansbrough··on ex-OpenAI Researcher Quits Anthropic over AI Safety Fears
Probably has something to do with the Alignment Lead at Anthropic agreeing with him, saying there’s a >10% chance that AI kills humanity in the next decade.
lwansbrough··on On the Navier–Stokes Millennium Prize Problem
It would be nice if one of these models would produce a novel theory or advance the field in a positive direction.

Most (all?) of the big discoveries have been counterexamples, which is just sort of a systematic tearing down human ingenuity. I know that counterexamples are an important part of progress and discovery, but it just feels bad to me.

But I'm not a mathematician, maybe I'm totally misreading the vibe.

lwansbrough··on Watch Los Angeles get built, one building at a time (1880–2026)
Same story in San Francisco of course, and the rest of the US pretty much aside from a few cities in recent years.
lwansbrough··on GPT-6 Astra
To me AGI has always meant sentience. And only since we’ve discovered that you can have something that is intelligent without it being apparently sentient that we’ve changed the definition to being, I suppose, more exactly aligned with the namesake.

A real AGI, like the ones from science fiction, would make Astra look like a child’s toy. And I guess more concretely I would expect it to inhibit the following properties: one shot learning - fully (and always) online, perfectly efficient (through self improvement), no context limitations ie. persistently thinking, not just awaiting input.

So for me, no, not AGI yet. But still very intelligent and capable (and perhaps it’s safer this way?)

lwansbrough··on Claude Fable 5.1 and Claude Mythos 5.1
On the contrary, I think the novelty of AI blowing our minds with each release has worn off a bit. These are some impressive improvements in science benchmarks. But we're sort of used to seeing impressive improvements now.

That doesn't make them less impressive, it just means people are shifting their focus more towards their own day to day experience with these things because we're relying on them so much now.

Like when the novelty of the automobile wore off, I'm sure people were starting to say "it's a bumpy ride though, isn't it?"

lwansbrough··on Google Maps changed to show Lake Ontario as Lake America
It's probably a good representative sample. So I do believe that roughly 50% of the US population supports or would vote for Trump.
lwansbrough··on Google Maps changed to show Lake Ontario as Lake America
"Patriotic" and it's the renaming of a place with historic meaning and cultural significance to the region on both sides of the border. It's vandalism. Like when ISIS went around destroying historic sites.

Does every Trump supporter have to be just woefully ignorant about every single topic?

lwansbrough··on Google Maps changed to show Lake Ontario as Lake America
While they show Lake Ontario (Lake America) in the rest of the world, I would like to suggest that they apply a more patronizing treatment to the alias:

Lake Ontario ("Lake America")

The quotes add a certain.. je ne sais quoi.

I think overall it's not Google's job to decide the names of things. Half of America voted for the circus, enjoy!

lwansbrough··on Students prefer Gemini over ChatGPT and Claude for AI essays in blind tests
If you use Gemini after reading Claude's simlish, it will feel very refreshing.
lwansbrough··on Vomit: Clean up Claude 5's token output with a separate LLM
I feel like Opus 5 is going to need a postmortem once they figure out what makes it so obnoxious. It's clearly something like an artifact of getting the model to reach deeper for tokens, possibly because it has some positive impact on coding and/or tool calling. But man is it bad for general communication, like borderline unusable.
lwansbrough··on Qwen 3.8 27B
I suspect if you showed one human a million photos of a bike they might get it right.
lwansbrough··on Qwen 3.8 27B
Perhaps this isn’t a new observation but the problem with LLMs is very clear with these. It’s a nice microcosm. The LLM will draw a fish companion (unprompted!) with a nice gradient but won’t get the pelican’s feet right.

It’s obviously a problem of fundamental understanding and demonstrates that reasoning is more “directionless rigour”.
