AI Engineer in the public sector in Berlin

luplex··on Verda (Finland) raises $189M in Series B
I work in a European government institution. This is definitely a risk we care about, and we would switch to sovereign clouds in a heartbeat if we had any good ones in Europe.
luplex··on My temporary PHP fix from 2014 has nearly 20M installs. Today I'm deprecating it
Hm, I would not spell it with a "t" then, but maybe with an apostrophe instead.

"Uh'oh" is more readable in my opinion and won't be mispronou in ced

luplex··on AirPods 5
I recently upgraded from my Airpods Pro to the Huawei Freebuds Pro 5. Audio quality, battery life, noice cancelling, and especially microphone quality is so much better! And they work nicely with Android, Windows and MacOS. I would 100% recommend them to anyone over any other Earbuds, at 160€ they are also not amongst the more expensive models.
luplex··on iPhone Duo
it's the most expensive iPhone. People want to flex their wealth. Foldable phones usually replace phones, not tablets.
luplex··on “Tweet” and the bird logo apparently enter the public domain
German editorialized media always refers to it as a Short Message Service (Der Kurznachrichtendienst "X").
luplex··on Mistral raises €3B
No, Thiel is talking about the UN and global minimum taxes when he talks about the Antichrist.
luplex··on Live map of public transport in Belgium
same thing with global data (but of course not full coverage everywhere): https://travic.app
luplex··on Ask HN: How to roll out Agents for knowledge workers?
oh that's nice! are the web-apps read-only, with nicely scoped access, or can they alter each other's documents?
luplex··on Ask HN: I've quit six systems for tracking my illness. What works?
My friend paid someone to call her every day and ask her how she's doing, then write the rating in a spreadsheet.
luplex··on Future euro banknote design proposals
what, Germans love the Eiffel tower
luplex··on Future euro banknote design proposals
this is because people don't even recognize the buildings. Even I only recognized the commission and the ECB. I think if we put them on our money, citizens will recognize them more!
luplex··on Future euro banknote design proposals
I think it's the other way around. Many people have no idea about how the EU works and what exactly is going on there. I believe highlighting the key institutions through their iconic buildings will raise awareness and increase trust in EU institutions!

And I think that's why it was considered.

luplex··on Future euro banknote design proposals
Okay but would people in Spain really have an issue with da Vinci? isn't he cool af to everyone? isn't the Italian renaissance shared European history?
luplex··on Future euro banknote design proposals
I think that actually these specific people would be a great choice for the Euro banknotes, because they are inspiring across borders. None of them are "national heroes". In Germany, we like Beethoven not because he was an exemplary German, but because he wrote bangers. In Germany, we look up to Marie Curie, because she won two Nobel prizes for cool research, no matter her nationalities! And they both migrated between European countries, like exemplary Europeans.
luplex··on Future euro banknote design proposals
You know what, I have seen many hypothetical criticisms like this, but not a single complaint from someone whose country would "not be represented". Maybe this just isn't a problem? Like I'm from Germany, and I would be completely fine if they had picked only people from e.g. eastern Europe, if they were cool enough!
luplex··on Soofi – Sovereign Open Source Foundation Models
It actually looks like an open source German model that might be useful! However, I'm not sure which version I should try - they provide two reasoning versions.
luplex··on Show HN: OpenClawMachines – Extending OpenClaw to the Enterprise
I have a quite specific use case. I work for a government agency and we run our AI assistant with models from Azure, which works fine! (Although the models aren't always released with EU data residency)

Our most interesting data and documents are classified (VS-NfD), and I don't know of any good certified AI solutions for that yet. I would love to experiment more with deeper system integration, but we can't do that without frontier VS-NfD models.

luplex··on Show HN: 18 Words
very fun to feel how a word with many repeatead letters is really much easier to spot, because the necessary search algorithm is just that much faster!
luplex··on Four by Three Puzzle
I was just about to post the same thing. The fun is not just in solving the puzzle, but in solving it in a specific way (hub word first, purple category first)
luplex··on Apertus – Open Foundation Model for Sovereign AI
It's a different country, and Switzerland is not even in the EU.
luplex··on Apertus – Open Foundation Model for Sovereign AI
Sovereignty is a political buzzword. From the political point of view, you want your country to be as independent as possible. This means you need the capabilities to build and deploy good AI models. Initiatives like this are more about capability-building and less about LLM-building.

Why do we need capabilities in Europe? Because Trump and Xi can't be trusted to keep providing us with new frontier models in the next years.

luplex··on Ask HN: Why hasn't there been a real competitor to Ticketmaster yet?
We also have Eventim and many other local ticket shops. I usually get my tickets right at the venue's online shop, or maybe from the artist. They use all kinds of systems.
luplex··on Microsoft announces Scout, an autonomous AI agent built on OpenClaw
Adding full interoperability with Matrix clients as a paid add-on to Teams would be this
luplex··on Goodbye Visa and Mastercard: 130M Europeans switching to sovereign payment
Wero's messaging is so confusing. It's so many different things at the same time. In short: Wero is a brand name for a collection of payment services. They are merging multiple European alternatives, like Spain's Bizum and the Netherlands' IDeal. These mergers are in various stages, so what exactly "Wero" can do depends on: - your bank - your country

Wero-proper (like it is in Germany, not a rebrand of a pre-existing system) currently supports peer-to-peer payments via SEPA instant transfer, using a centralized phone number <> IBAN lookup server.

Wero also supports online e-commerce payments (with buyer's protection similar to credit cards, managed by the customer's bank). But not all banks that support Wero p2p also support Wero E-commerce. If your payments run on e.g. Stripe, you can enable Wero for all participating banks. Wero is cheaper than credit card payments.

Some time next year, Wero will offer in-store point-of-sale (POS) payments. Afaik, those are not live anywhere yet.

I think with all the mergers with established systems, the chance of success is really high.

luplex··on A Markdown-based test suite
no, this is just about the shape of the quote.

There are straight quotes: ' or "

and there are curly quotes: ‘ and ’ or “ and ”

"curling" then just means "figuring out whether it's an opening or closing quote"

luplex··on Nobody understands the point of hybrid cars [video]
Having a heat pump for heating is then really important, as compared to a simple resistive heating element
luplex··on Show HN: Haystack – Review the PRs that need human attention
Haystack is a popular Framework for building AI agents: https://haystack.deepset.ai/
luplex··on Soft launch of open-source code platform for government
In Germany, we have the similar portal https://opencode.de (no relation to the coding agent)

It's built on Gitlab and does everything you need your git to do.

They also provide hardened base container images at https://container.gov.de

luplex··on Ask HN: How to become better at software "engineering"?
Fun read :D

At least I'm already working for the government, so I'm on the right track ;)

luplex··on Is it a pint?
and crucially, foam has to be above the line.

There is some back and forth around whether it's legal to serve beer in traditional ceramic steins, where customers can not verify that the foam really starts above the line.

As I understand, it is legal in Germany, but only if there is visible signage that informs customers about their right to pour their beer into a marked standard glass to check the amount. Source (German): https://www.abendblatt.de/incoming/article402102835/wer-hat-...

In 1899, an association was formed in Munich to combat fraudulent pouring. It was banned by the Nazis and re-formed in 1970. They went around and measured beers. This post is its spiritual successor. German: https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Verein_gegen_betr%C3%BCgerisch...
