lukeholder··on The Brutal Ageism of Tech
In my opinion I think it's just the free time to be able to put in the number of hours of deliberate practice. When you are younger you have far more time and flexibility to learn and experiment. In addition that time is spent on things that are seen to be new/better/modern and also come with a certain distain for doing things the way your predecessors did it. This mix gives the young person the flexibility of cutting corners and inventing/reinventing and by all appearance look 'smarter'.

I am now 30 with a wife 2 kids - I simply cannot put in the same number of hours of simply playing and practicing I did when I was 15-25. As much as I try to put in the hours, I need to face the fact I need to focus my time on them now. I also need to continue to earn a good living to give them everything I want for them (education, freedom). This means I am going to keep my 150k job doing things which may not be so innovative but I get to leave work at 5pm.

Whether that is a incorrect assumption I don't know, but from my perspective it feels true.

lukeholder··on OneNote Service API
Wow, I didn't know that was released yet. The new version of office for mac cant be too far away.
lukeholder··on WebFlow
I agree also.
lukeholder··on The new PHP
All this is very true.

Modern PHP is not the PHP of yesteryear. With Composer for dependancy management and sticking to the PSR's you can build very stable, testable, and modern applications that change minds about PHP.

lukeholder··on GitHub's new text editor leaked on Twitter
looks like it is built on node-webkit so probably yes.

lukeholder··on What if Apple bought Tesla?
Don't underestimate that Apple has a good grasp of the cutting edge technologies even if they are not building those things themselves and putting out beta after beta. What Apple have a knack for is waiting until the technology is at a stage where there is a real and legitimate consumer use for the technology and refine it down to where its practically usable.

Futurist tech list google glass and self driving cars is exciting - but not within the grasps of real use by everyday people.

lukeholder··on Kamele PHP Framework. Small framework. Much awesome.
yeah as soon as i saw it was not using composer i knew it wasn't a "cool" framework.
lukeholder··on Show HN: ssh and cd get married

lukeholder··on Demystifying AngularJS' dependency injection
I agree, its magic gone too far where you are no longer using javascript you are using angularscript.
lukeholder··on Poll: US residents, how do you do your taxes?
"Here in Australia" (you forgot to mention). etax is a very user friendly program and works great on mac and pc. So awesome you can submit everything and even put in your back details to get your return within a few days deposited into your account.

My friend set this up as a night job in our small town and people love it. I told him to start getting other people onboard but he thinks its more fun than a business. http://ninjadeliveries.com/

lukeholder··on Review my startup, joday.com
I would suggest you simply ask the user for the information you need in order to give them something, then offer facebook as a simpler way to give them that.

I mean, if you are getting access to their FB accounts to see what they like, why not put 5 input boxes down the left side with something like "Name your 5 most favourite things" with a submit button.

On the right have something like: "Or sign in with facebook and save some time!"

If they like what they get with the inputs on the left, they are more likely to give you access to their facebook data to enjoy the experience more.

lukeholder··on Martini: Classy web development in Go
Great work Jeremy. Although there are a number of web frameworks similar to Sinatra on go, this feels to me to be the most natural. The care taken to present this well shows this project has promise.

Are you looking to make this more full featured with an ORM/persistence layer (i.e Rails) or keep it small and similar to Sinatra?

lukeholder··on Stop Freelancing
For me that pdf chapter example was very hard to read.
lukeholder··on Benchmarking Codswallop: Node.js vs. PHP
I agree that the comparisons are often unfair between languages/frameworks, and agree with everything phil says, but there is a lot to be said for language level non-blocking constructs.

I am really enjoying reading Go code and seeing how people use concurrency etc; and they are all doing it the same. When I would read ruby, I would have to know the particulars of a library like Celluloid or EventMachine which made it harder.

More likely they did it only for financial reasons.
