lujim··on We're in a Golden Age for Amateur Radio
Learning morse code well enough to be able to decode 25-30 word per minute code in your head is incredibly satisfying. Also since transmitting a narrow sine wave takes much less power than a wider bandwidth voice signal you can get much further or operate on a fraction of the power.

I've talked (in morse code) to people on the air that are former US Navy radio telegraphers, submariners, Air force mechanics etc. That generation is heading into their golden years and many of them will be gone in 10-20 years. It's interesting to hear about their lives in their own words.

I've made contacts to Moscow Russia on 100 watts, Asia, most of Europe and most of the States in the US.

I've also built the tiny QCX in that article by soldering and hand winding toroids. Fired it up and made a contact several hundred miles away on a tiny amount of power. I used an arduino to create a scratch built keyer with all my own circuts and code. Then I hooked it up to my paddles, set the speed and used it for tons of contacts.

In short, it can be a very satisfying hobby if you are nerdy enough.

lujim··on Capitalism is killing the world’s wildlife populations, not ‘humanity’
lol you got downvoted.... I can't imagine what kind of person wouldn't agree with this statement. Falling for Communism in 1917 is one thing, but falling for it with access to a 20th century history book... well that's a mental disorder.
lujim··on Capitalism is killing the world’s wildlife populations, not ‘humanity’
Socialists/Communists and anti-vaxers are similar in their irrationality. Literally no amount of data over any time period could get them to even question their position.

They are also similar in the fact that their ideas seek to undo over a century of progress that massively reduced human suffering.

Capitalism and vaccinations are two of the greatest achievements in human history in terms of improving the quality of human life on earth. Why anyone would advocate abandoning them after learning about what life was like before them is completely incomprehensible.

lujim··on Capitalism is killing the world’s wildlife populations, not ‘humanity’
The fact that anyone could downvote this post is telling. It's completely reasonable and easily verifiable with data. You even cited the Economist which is a reputable resource.

It's also reasonable to assert that self preservation is arguably the most important thing to individual humans as well as all other species on earth.

You acknowledge the counter argument that capitalism isn't perfect. You also admit that while it may be possible to find a new system, it may be difficult to implement and take a long time. You end by encouraging an open conversation.

Politically motivated people have become completely detached from reality, irrational, and delusional.

STEM or skilled trades. I'm not saving money every month for my kids college 529 plans so that it can be spent to send them to a $100,000 political re-education camp for 4 years.

The word is out about the humanities in US Universities. They are a melting pot of resentful people who actively restrict free speech/thought while pushing an awful mix of proven bad ideas.

lujim··on Capitalism is killing the world’s wildlife populations, not ‘humanity’
Come for the mud huts and starvation, stay for the sky-high infant mortality!
lujim··on Capitalism is killing the world’s wildlife populations, not ‘humanity’
It's time to face facts. Universities in the United States have completely failed. They have brainwashed impressionable young students with unbelievably bad political opinions and faulty logic while putting them in inescapable lifelong debt. It's absolutely criminal.

I'm not even acknowledging the article because it's pure propaganda and I was unable to get through it after several honest attempts.

lujim··on Capitalism is killing the world’s wildlife populations, not ‘humanity’
You started with an incorrect assertion that contradicts every data point available and end by advocating anarchy and a general collapse of civilization. I admire your conviction.
lujim··on How horror changed after WW1
I tried several times to get through this article. I thought it was just me.
lujim··on A Sudden Illness (2003)
I picked it up in 2004 and never fully recovered. Interesting that there are multiple comments in this thread were people had a similar experience from 2001-2004.
lujim··on UK unveils new Tempest fighter jet
Man these 5th gen fighters are unattractive. Even the F-22 being the best looking of the bunch looks blah from several angles.
lujim··on ER bills: A baby was treated with a nap. His parents got an $18,000 bill
The reply next yours says the same thing without the toxic feel that makes the internet a slightly worse place for everyone. Go out in that big world and find something that makes you a happier person.
lujim··on ER bills: A baby was treated with a nap. His parents got an $18,000 bill
Fair jab. My point was that the Search & Rescue "pay to play" model seems unreasonable. It was originally intended to be used in cases of negligence/recklessness but is apparently being used in plain vanilla S&R activities somewhat randomly based on the whims of local authorities.

The case I'm talking about was similar to this article. S&R possible overreacted and charged a guy $9000+. There was no danger, just a miscommunication. That seems similar to this article where a guy got a minor scrape on his head from tipping over his motorcycle and an entire Trauma team was readied unbeknownst to him. Yet he still got the bill.

lujim··on ER bills: A baby was treated with a nap. His parents got an $18,000 bill
Wow. Now imagine you were hiking in the mountains, you break your ankle, and need the help of search and rescue to get out of there. After you get a $15,000 bill for a Trauma fee from the hospital you get a $10,000 bill for a search and rescue fee from the state. Yes it's the Ticket Master business model.

If anyone hears that I'm missing in a forest somewhere, please do me a favor and don't call anybody.

lujim··on First physiological test for autism proves high accuracy in second trial
A clinically important syndrome; that is, it's a collection of symptoms (these can be behavioral or psychological) that causes the person disability or distress in social, personal, or occupational functioning.
lujim··on First physiological test for autism proves high accuracy in second trial
Yes this happens over time as clinical terms are used in a derogatory manner over a period of several decades. This will always happen and some clinical terms will continually need to be revised over time. It doesn't mean that "disorder" isn't appropriate in 2018. It just means it may not be appropriate in 2058.
lujim··on First physiological test for autism proves high accuracy in second trial
> I've had people get mad at me for saying that I have a son with autism when I apparently should have said that I have an autistic son.

It has become exhausting trying walk the ever shifting minefield of acceptable verbiage. I'm not sure how you would apply this to other situations. If you have a son with red hair should he be called your red headed son? That sounds more offensive right?

lujim··on First physiological test for autism proves high accuracy in second trial
There seems to be a ton of debate on lumping and splitting various disorders in the DSM. If I remember correctly academics like to split, practicing clinicians like to lump. There is so much overlap in many conditions that psychologists and psychiatrists that actually deal directly with patients question the need to split every small permutation of symptoms into a distinct disorder. I'm not saying the DSM-5 is absolutely free of issues as I'm sure DSM-6,7,8,20 will be an improvement.
lujim··on First physiological test for autism proves high accuracy in second trial
I'm not sure, but I bet you're right. It is a medical reference that will change over time as better information becomes available. It's still the definitive manual for classifying mental and personality disorders.
lujim··on First physiological test for autism proves high accuracy in second trial
I hear you but the DSM-5 (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders) classifies it as a mental disorder.

Autism Spectrum Disorder 299.00 (F84.0)

lujim··on Air Force tests two turboprops as potential A-10 “replacements”
It was interesting to read on the F-14 Wikipedia page that Iraqi pilots would often completely avoid engaging with Iranian Tomcats. Just the threat of the AIM-54 was enough to maintain air superiority.

"They performed well, but their primary role was to intimidate the Iraqi Air Force and avoid heavy engagement to protect the fleet's numbers. Their presence was often enough to drive away opposing Iraqi fighters. The precision and effectiveness of the Tomcat's AWG-9 weapons system and AIM-54A Phoenix long-range air-to-air missiles enabled the F-14 to maintain air superiority"

lujim··on Air Force tests two turboprops as potential A-10 “replacements”
It absolutely kills me to argue against the F-14 especially after reading that every single one of them were turned into scrap to keep parts out of Iran. However... Tomcats had a long full life, were maintenance hogs, and had outlived their mission. Ouch, it hurt to write that, but it's probably true. The Rhino's (Super Hornets) are very capable.
lujim··on Brain, Mind, Body and the Disease of Addiction
> If someone suffers depression from opiate withdrawal, we call them an addict. If someone suffers depression from going through a breakup, it's just par for the course. And yet both scenarios are withdrawal from a pleasurable stimulus. Why is one acceptable and the other not?

If someone doesn't get food or water and is deprived of sleep for a few days they will develop the symptoms of depression.

Humans need food, water, sleep, and social connections to thrive. When one of those is temporarily thwarted, mental and physical pain is a signal to take action. It's not always pleasant, but it will keep you alive and your genes in the game. This is unavoidable and often useful pain.

Recreational opiate use on the other hand is an extremely dangerous short circuit of the brains pleasure centers that very often results in physical dependance, legal problems, and death.

Part of maturing is understanding that you don't always have to mask pain and chase pleasure. It's ok and even healthy to feel like shit sometimes.

lujim··on Reddit Gearing Up to Ban or Quarantine the Alt Right Subreddit
Yawn. No big surprise here, and it won't be a surprise when when the_donald is banned. Reddit users tend to be young and young people tend to lean left. It is by definition and echo chamber due to how quickly unpopular opinions are vaporized by downvoting.

What would be more interesting is to see what subreddits are tolerated that promote excessively immoral or illegal behavior.

lujim··on Reddit’s CEO edited comments that criticized him
There are also several subs that I don't care for. We could get everyone to help put a list together and remove everything except for r/oddlysatisfying

Reddit tolerates subs that promote all out illegal behavior, so suspending the_donald for being obnoxious would be a bad move. If you have hate speech or whatever you handle that by banning the user not the sub.

lujim··on Fake News
Sure they didn't say Clinton won a state that she really didn't win nor did they say she won the election when she didn't. It is possible to be quite dishonest through exaggeration, omission, and sensationalism. It is also possible to be dishonest by producing models that are later shown to be hilariously wrong and passing it off as incompetence rather than misinformation (98% chance of a Clinton victory anyone?)

When I see the kind of blatant bias that the anchors on ABC, NBC, CBS, CNN etc showed on election night I can't help feeling like the networks that write their paychecks are intentionally trying to misinform people for their own gain.

lujim··on Fake News
Are you saying that organizations like ABC, NBC, CBS, CNN etc are reasonably fair and unbiased without any underlying political motivations? If that is the case then go watch some replays from election night. It was the first time in my life where I really felt like it may not be possible to get reasonably unbiased factual information from a single US news organization.

I was watching live when Martha Raddatz almost broke into tears on ABC news. I was thinking "Is she going to start crying? Who is allowing her to be on camera as a serious news person".

lujim··on Manufacturing Jobs Aren’t Coming Back
And here we see how news written by people without industry experience meant to be consumed by people without industry experience for the purpose of promoting a political idea can use pieces of real information to promote something less than the truth.

Next time you want to see if you trust a certain source for any of your information, pay close attention when they report on a topic where you have a lot of experience. As someone with a professional aviation background, watching CNN cover any aviation topic causes me physical pain.

lujim··on For software developers: how to find a job with relocation to Europe
"why the hell would you NOT chase a girl if you think she's worth chasing?"

Hmm... Restraining order I guess?

lujim··on For software developers: how to find a job with relocation to Europe
Life hack #2: Don't move to Europe to chase a girl or run from a President-elect. (actually do whatever you want just don't expect the girl to be as good or the President-elect to be as bad as they seem to you right now)

Edit: All the guys with great relationships... I was attempting unsuccessfully to be funny. Have a great weekend.

Edit 2: It appears from the replies below that 75% of men that follow a girl to another country find it to be the best decision they ever made. I would like to formally retract my Lifehack
