luckman212··on Sanctum || A pq-safe and sandboxed VPN daemon
I just love the design of this code. If more software were written with such keen regard for principle of least-privilege, the entire sham "cyber security" industry might not need to exist.
luckman212··on "Silent Spring" remains a rousing call to action (2022)
Recently watched Common Ground on Prime, which was quite good (and disturbing). There is hope for the future if we raise awarenes.

luckman212··on Show HN: AI Overview Hider for Google
We are living in strange times.
luckman212··on Windows File Manager (WinFile) repository archived on March 1, 2025
I (very) badly want to believe this couldn't possibly be true—but sadly, if I had to guess, I'd bet money that it is.

luckman212··on Rsync replaced with openrsync on macOS Sequoia

luckman212··on fd: A simple, fast and user-friendly alternative to 'find'
I just released an Alfred workflow[0] for searching a group of user-defined directories, that heavily relies on fd under the hood. Thank you @sharkdp for this amazing tool, I use it every day and it is wonderful.

Hyperfine is another underrated gem that is just so great.

luckman212··on Microsoft paywalling AI features in Notepad and Paint
macOS (OS X for those old enough to remember when it exuded quality) is no picnic either. Apple's software is arguably buggier than Microsoft/Windows these days. I haven't seen a real Blue Screen of Death in years, but my M4 Pro Mac Mini with 64GB RAM routinely hard-locks on a black screen when simply trying to reboot it, or starts beachballing with some process called 'audiomxd' eating my CPU.
luckman212··on Ask HN: Alternative to Shush?
I've had good success with toggleMute[0] (GitHub). It's written in Swift and runs well on macOS 15.3.

You can toggle the mic with a hotkey, and it adds a menubar icon/menu so you can see the current mic status at a glance.

department of _ efficiency? no thanks, i'm out... good luck
luckman212··on Airflow – Stream media files directly from macOS to AirPlay devices
Does this allow one to e.g. pipe the current audio output on my Mac to my iPhone so I can walk away for a few minutes and keep listening to whatever YT video, Zoom call or Podcast that happens to be playing?

If not, does anyone know of a solution for this? Right now I'm using Jump Desktop which actually does a good job, but consumes lots of extra bandwidth since it also streams the Mac's screen (at near 30fps).

luckman212··on Ice: Powerful open source menu bar manager for macOS
I love Ice as well. Hoping development resumes soon, the developer got busy with life a few months ago and there are a few QoL changes that would really elevate this. Notably, the ability to declare the location where "new" icons are placed (left, right, hidden etc)

luckman212··on Trae: AI Code Editor from ByteDance
Wait till 2026:

You pay, and your'e the product, AND the product is broken, AND the devs and customer service have been replaced by an AI chatbot that is very polite but only gives incorrect answers. The future is bright.

luckman212··on TikTok Is Down in the US
Is it still called stealing when the users carelessly whack the "allow" buttons and grant permission to the app to siphon up whatever it wants?
luckman212··on Perplexity AI submits bid to merge with TikTok
My dad (80 years old) just called yesterday to tell me about this cool new app he found- Perplexity. So I guess the PR is working...
luckman212··on Intel's Tofino P4 Software Is Now Open Source
What's the best "NUC-like" product on the market now? I know ASUS has their lineup of "NUC" that was spun off from Intel. I have used MSI's "Cubi" which was a pretty nice kit. And I know everyone drools over Minisforum stuff (which is expensive but very nicely designed). Any other notable ones?
luckman212··on TikTok preparing for U.S. shut-off on Sunday
Got any room over in your universe? I'm feeling pretty tired of this one.
luckman212··on Human judgment must remain central to health insurance claims: California law
This is the reason some believe the "value proposition" of having the CEO executed point blank is justified.
luckman212··on Nordstrom family to take company private
> "tech darling like intel"

I guess you haven't looked at INTC stock price recently? As of yesterday's close on 2024-12-23 it's essentially unchanged from where it was 30 years ago. If you factor in inflation (which you should) it's actually lost 50% of its value over that time period.

Apple, Microsoft and Google are different animals.

luckman212··on Ask HN: Simplest, lightest way to sync a single file between Macs?
or just any git repo, doesn't have to be github
luckman212··on The legacy of NeXT lives on in OS X (2012)
But holy shit were those BeBoxes sexy as hell. As a teenager, seeing them for the first time, in an era of soulless, beige, badly named Macs like the "Performa", made a lasting impression that I still remember 30 years later.

Those twin vertically arranged CPU usage LEDs running up the sides of the case, pulsing as the box churned through multiple windows of buttery smooth video playback, while the operator simultaneously read and wrote to the disk, accessed the network, and manipulated the filesystem–without ever stuttering, dropping frames, or beachballing–was really quite something at that time. BeOS could multitask in a way nobody else was doing, and macOS still cannot match it.

Still think it would have been interesting to not let some of that tech die on the vine.

luckman212··on Useful built-in macOS command-line utilities
Don't forget about "open -b <bundle_id> foo.txt" for example,

    open -b com.sublimetext.4 file.txt
I prefer this vs using the App Name or Path, since those can vary depending on the system or app version. The bundle ID is more robust.
luckman212··on Ping Rate Clock
For macOS, you might check out Pingr. It puts a nice looking flame graph in your menubar showing realtime latency.

https://getpingr.app

Unfortunately it's not open source, but I've not suffered any ill-effects yet.

luckman212··on JetKVM: Tiny IP KVM That's Not an Apple Watch
I bought a TinyPilot Voyager 2a[0] last year and it's been a pleasure to work with. Got Tailscale going so I get easy access anywhere without any firewall hole-punching, and latency is good. Attached a 256GB micro USB for holding various ISOs for installing OS. I have the PoE model so no power adapter needed. Very handy.

The only negative for me is, the creator sold the business[1] and so the future is uncertain at this point.
