lucas_codes··on Ask HN: Help me pick a front-end framework
I'd agree with all these, but if I understood correctly OP wants to annotate static text rather than edit.

OP this is an interesting and rather niche area, you will want to be making use of the selection API[0] and figuring out a good way to make it reactive to integrate with react and your data model.

lucas_codes··on Launch HN: Payload (YC S22) – Headless CMS for Developers
Have you ever found one that covers all of these well?
lucas_codes··on Why are D-sharp and E-flat considered to be two different notes?
Yes and no, a violinist has to use their taste and experience to match the intonation of the fretted instrument in some cases (for example, when playing the exact same note) and not other cases (for example, perhaps a piano plays a C and a G and violin plays an E, the violinist will likely want to play a lower E than the piano would to get the exact ratios described in the article.)
lucas_codes··on Connect-Web: TypeScript library for calling RPC servers from web browsers
I'm rather a fan of using gRPC in a stack. It has its cons, but you get a generated client/server that is type-safe, even across different languages.

Would love to hear alternatives which do the same thing. I know one possibility is OpenAPI specs generated from Django Rest Framework.

What is grpc-web-text?
lucas_codes··on Ask HN: What killer features do you wish you had on your personal website?
You're probably familiar with developers, but artists are another profession that often have their own homepages.

Useful features are the ability to show and easily update a list of events for performances or exhibitions, and media for portfolio or headshots etc.

lucas_codes··on Ask HN: What's is your go to toolset for simple front end development?
Use vite instead of CRA these days!
lucas_codes··on I Finally Found a Solid Debian Tablet: The Surface Go 2
Do your research, the surfaces tend to have a lot of hardware issues. There are many threads on the support forum about people losing functionality like touch after updates. I have the surface pro 3 and lucky haven't had major issues, but it has series battery drain while powered off.

lucas_codes··on Joke written by an AI: “A basic program walked into a bar ”
I think copypastas are a particularly good fit for an AI to create, since they follow a rigid structure with word substitutions based on a particular topic.
lucas_codes··on Joke written by an AI: “A basic program walked into a bar ”
The navy seal copypastas are incredible, particularly the Zizek one:

What in Slovene psychoanalysis did you just write about me, you ignorant little piglet? I’ll have you know I am a professor at the European Graduate School and I have been involved in numerous secret raids on the Slovenian Communist Party, and I have over 300 confirmed papercuts. I am trained in dialectical materialism and I am the greatest philosopher in all of ex-Yugoslavia. You are nothing to me but just another militant atheist. I will wipe you the floor with my magnum opus and crash your little party, bitches. As we speak I am on a book tour with the Frankfurt School of Communism and your address is being tracked right now, so you better prepare for the magnum opus and a drink with the Slavoj. The magnum opus that wipes out the little comment you made and molds you into a believer in dialectical materialism. You’re going to be a believer soon, kid. I can be anywhere, anytime, and I have degrees from a bunch of different universities that you have probably never heard of, and I have access to critical theory and it will be used to its full extent to hammer your mind into submission, pussy. Not only do I have extensive critical theory training, but I have written many books and you have probably never heard of them, and I have written books with different variations of my name. Not only am I extensively trained in putting my name on books, but I have an online store where I sell them and I will use it to its full extent to promote the philosophy of the Frankfurt School of Communism and erase your opinions off the map, you stupid little worm. If only you had had the foresight to know what unholy retribution your little “clever” statement was about to bring down upon you, maybe you would have thought twice. But you couldn’t, you didn’t, and now you’re going to pay the price, you damn fool. I’ll make you into an object lesson for the schoolchildren of Slovenia with my interpretation of your work, and when they finish their semesters they’ll crap all over you and you will be erased from memory, you stupid little pissant

Did Emily Howell actually pass a turing test? It's sounds very "generated" to me.
lucas_codes··on Samsung Clipboard History Catching and Saving Passwords
What password manager do you use? Keepass2Android can both use the android autofill framework or comes with a custom keyboard that can input from your passwords - both of these options avoid the clipboard.
lucas_codes··on The complicated futility of WordPress
I'm using it. The docs leave a little to be desired if you're customizing (they just released a new major version), but you can customize and replace the rich text editor with your own, add a preview button, add a deploy button, etc.

If you want a wordpress replacement though, there will be a big learning curve as it's a general-purpose CMS, not specifically for blogs.

Much of the point of TS is to make make this kind of refactoring easier, and it doesn't prevent coercing the data format later at all.
lucas_codes··on Popular LoFi Girl Instagram page is taken down with no explanation
From memory, the original image/clip was taken directly from a Ghibli movie, "Whisper of the Heart", but following a copyright complaint, it was replaced with an original work that was the same style and subject matter (a girl with her cat studying in her room, with a nice view out the window).

FWIW, the code is open-source and the legal org behind it has clauses disallowing it from becoming for-profit.
lucas_codes··on Why do we tune in 5ths?
I see. I was confused because string players talk a lot about our wolf notes/wolf tones (especially violists and cellists), but I hadn't come across the term wolf interval.
lucas_codes··on Why do we tune in 5ths?
Wolf tones are certain notes which don't sound very well which vary between instruments due to their construction. I think you mean the Pythagorean comma.

lucas_codes··on Paradise lost: The rise and ruin of Couchsurfing.com
I'm a volunteer dev for https://couchers.org which was started in response to the Couchsurfing paywall and mentioned in this article. It's steadily growing in both users and features, and is open source and non-profit.

BeWelcome is similarly open-source and non profit, which I'd also recommend as a CS alternative (although they have a somewhat different vision to Couchers and CS).

lucas_codes··on American parents are sending their kids to 'Russian math' (2017)
Thank you for such a detailed comment. Maybe then I'm just missing the American context. Having lived in the UK and Australia (which have their own lion's share of education issues), to me it's obvious that students struggling should get support, and students who excel should be able to go further, and I don't think anyone imagines a system where everyone is always in one classroom with 100% the same learning.

I'm very against the idea that struggling students should just be "sacrificed" for the advanced student, however, which some of the other comments seem to be implying.

lucas_codes··on American parents are sending their kids to 'Russian math' (2017)
Why is dumbing down science teaching the fault of extreme progressive left and not, say, reduced education funding, favouring religious teaching, or even more likely, nuanced policy difficulties that don't fit nicely into a left/right divide?
lucas_codes··on Imperfect Vaccination Can Enhance the Transmission of Highly Virulent Pathogens (2015)
"There is no evidence" means only that, it doesn't mean we shouldn't wear masks to prevent community transmission. You can still use logic.

It's a virus where transmission is heavily influenced by water droplets. Masks limit the reach of water droplets from the nose and mouth.

Also it is unlikely for there to be a large study for ethical reasons (if wearing a mask might help, you can't get a control group).

> it at a minimum establishes the very real risks of cloth mask wearing

That is a pretty gross misreading of a study which has no non-mask control group and looked very different conditions to the pandemic
