lsd5you··on Notice concerning .eu domains registered by UK residents
Yes at all. There's something unnerving about the way the remain side of the debate all engage in this mafia boss style of low key gas lighting. Let's just not acknowledge the fact that you cannot merely just have have certain things easily. Suddenly rules and technicalities become extremely important to the EU.

Something else it is reminiscent of is joining a cult such as scientology. All reassurances and promises on the way in ... but when you try to leave... So in some sense of course Norway has X and Y. They gained these things whilst increasing integration with the EU.

Yes I know. Leave voters are less educated and somewhat racist statistically.

It wasn't some test of the unknown. He knew the emperor had no clothes and set out to prove it. The people who are pleased also know the emperor had no clothes and of course would have been disappointed if the fields were some how impervious.

lsd5you··on I'm a millionaire who creates zero jobs. Why do I pay less tax than you?
I'm not really sure why job creation is the appropriate moral metric. At the end of the day people who get wealthy generally are 'leveraging' (to be polite) the work of others. i.e. They are taking the profit from the work of others. If you can do something which is directly wealth creating without employing anyone then arguably you are more entitled to the money you earn. Ceteris paribus.

Not an argument that can be settled here, but the moral argument for job creators has to be that it is not a near zero sum game (i.e. it is not the case that if you don't create jobs then someone else will) and that they are systemically important. That is if we remove (magically/without shock) some of the current crop of job creators we would end up with an economic depression and as such they are an important societal good.

lsd5you··on Scratch 3.0
It really never occurred to me to try that for sharing code as opposed to just having multiple of the same sprite (bullets, enemies and the like). Still it's not hugely satisfactory because it implies a single common sprite, loss of the intuitive wysiwyg aspect (such as it is), refactoring to utilise, and then presumably large 'switch' statements to recover the difference in behaviour between the clones.

Also found communicating between scratch objects via the asynchronous message passing to be seemingly too slow and it would have been nice to be able to call methods on another sprite (although I assume they are trying to limit the potential for uninteruptible infinite loops and the like by having each sprite execute separately).

lsd5you··on Scratch 3.0
You can't have shared code between sprites (IIUC), so the only sharing is via copy paste, which is unmanageable.
lsd5you··on Taking Stock of the World’s Debt
Not a financial expert, but is that really such a difference, and is that what liquidity really means? At the end of the day most short term debt can be converted into longer term debt possibly with some associated cost.
lsd5you··on The Social Credit System in China [video]
Really? This doesn't stand up as a comparison. In so far as there are shitty unwarranted consequences for unwanted actions in the west it is similar, but that is human nature (and possibly even wider than that).

The difference is that china is implementing a centralised, state controlled system. Which will elevate the minor tyranny of some obnoxious policy in some organisation to an unchecked and magnified universal tyranny. This is precisely why we need checks, balances and distribution of power, because the elite minority cannot be trusted.

lsd5you··on Facebook is not equipped to stop the spread of authoritarianism
Agree with the sentiment, but was there ever a push for decentralisation? Seems to me that the original decentralisation of the internet was circumstantial. It was due to the technology of the time (limited resources + aarpanet nuclear strike resistant design) and where it was first established (universities - which lack a unifying hierarchy).

Sure but the Flynn effect is just something measured and could well just be a 'low hanging fruit' environmental gains that will/already have run out.

lsd5you··on Chess Is the Killer App
You should consider revising your opinions and not making unwarranted assumptions. Or at the very least being open to the idea that it is because they are in fact not (statistically) equal in innate ability at the sport. It is certainly, prima facie, the obvious conclusion to reach.

Yes there are other factors such as the massively overburdened 'lack of role model' explanation, but these are better explained as positive feedback from an already unequal situation (and in any case does it matter so much if you can have separate men and women sides to the sport?).

The world is a very confusing and complicated place if you don't accept clear evidence however inconvenient!

Yes, but when did professionalism become a requirement for open source software?
lsd5you··on The growth in passive funds has caused markets to become more correlated?
This contradicts (correctly) the supposed proof that you cannot beat the market on average (since the index funds are the average). Clearly the index funds must be slower to the punch in some sense and thereby lose out to active investors.

Under duress. Let's not pretend it's some organic evolution in his personality, he has been pressured into this new position.

He is not a Nazi because he fought against them, but someone who had the same views as him today simply would be labelled a Nazi (or at least Nazi sympathizer) by many in the current environment. Strange times.
lsd5you··on What happens if you mistakenly apply for British citizenship?
Polls consistently show that Britain is one of the most tolerant countries in europe (debatable wether that is a good thing if it leads to intolerance in the long run ...) in any case I would suggest it is more likely the common language makes any alienation feel more raw. Alienated in a european country - can often be charitably put down to language differences (and learning the local language is a greater signal of integration when it's not english).
lsd5you··on What happens if you mistakenly apply for British citizenship?
My point was that getting rid of some of the terrible leaders did not solve any problems, indeed made things worse by most measures. Tribalism and perhaps worse - the rule of violence leads to bad leaders. I imagine even good people would have to be bad to stay on top in those societies.
lsd5you··on What happens if you mistakenly apply for British citizenship?
No doubt there are terrible leaders, but experience in the middle east has shown it's no just terrible leaders standing in the way of prosperity.

That your plans could lead to the deaths of millions perhaps? i.e. You're really some kind of crypto-authoritarian, or if not a useful idiot to the authoritarians that will emerge.
lsd5you··on Forced Labor in Malaysia's Electronics Industry
This is something which always gets me.

So it is widely accepted that there is no/negligible genetic difference, but there are cultural differences at least when it comes to prosperity.

However it is also the case that cultures are extremely slow to change - multiple generations - almost to the actual speed of evolution. Essentially conceding the point that even if it isn't genetic there is some kind of heritable negative/missing positive traits which can last multiple generations.

Except the trump administration isn't incompetent - by government standards, the same way he isn't utterly stupid but rather above average intelligence at the very least. This is just wishful thinking from the left.

They are of course at war with the media. What I don't understand is when educated people started to side with the war mongering media. The only time they were favourable was when he attacked syria.

lsd5you··on Pregnancy Discrimination Is Rampant Inside America’s Biggest Companies
We don't have "meritocracy" already, so this isn't a useful objection.

Groan. Well it's all degrees, and for the purposes of this discussion, the reason fertile women are discriminated against is because of lost productivity, no other reason is posited (it's not sexism per se, even though that does exist to some degree in places).

In fact, perhaps you should consider that your entire view of this is precisely the opposite way round of where it ought to be.

You are unlikely to fully understand my view. Especially given that you are prone to uncharitable reading of things.

lsd5you··on Pregnancy Discrimination Is Rampant Inside America’s Biggest Companies
If we can make provisions for permanently disabled people to have jobs, then we can make provisions for temporarily disabled people to also have jobs.

Provisions are made for pregnant people. Just many people are not satisified that it is sufficient. Disabled people, can sometimes have careers not compromised by their disability (since many jobs are sitting down), other than that they probably have a very unsatisfactory work situation overall, that in noway would satisfy these kind of complaints which are actually an order of magnitude less challenging. I think in the UK 50% of blind people are completely unemployed (nevermind derailed from a certain favorite career). This is not true of women who have had children and want to work.

More daycare would be a good thing. Problem is the rather extreme regulation has made it so costly in many western countries (and not necessarily so much better).

lsd5you··on Pregnancy Discrimination Is Rampant Inside America’s Biggest Companies
Then you'd just be discriminating against the youngish, the married and a bunch of other factors. I just think these kind of answers are the first logical steps in trying to address the problem. With more thought and experience people will arrive at the realisation that there may actually not be a good mechanism to socially engineer the desired outcome.

Devolving decision making to the business owners and managers, and to individual workers is what allows the system to work. Attempts to override and legislate decisions will fail with unintended consequences and ultimately make things worse in other ways. A complete solution would require totalitarian control, at which point you may as well just have central planning.

lsd5you··on Pregnancy Discrimination Is Rampant Inside America’s Biggest Companies
Rather than merely downvoting perhaps people can actually try to argue the point and answer the difficult questions. What are the unintended consequences of this kind of legislation? Should the domain of women just be in big companies and government? What is the relative cost of losing jobs due to pregnancy (with some compensation from the government) vs not being hired for certain jobs in the first place. Do we end up favoring the less law abiding managers with more legislation? I believe so and indeed for this kind of morally dubious individual it makes sense to promote these kind of unenforceable laws.
